BISHOP CHALLONER

CATHOLIC COLLEGIATE SCHOOL

POLICY : PLANNING PREPARATION AND ASSESSMENT

Background

The third phase of the National Agreement, effective from 1.9.05 requires schools to
ensure that teachers subject to STPCD receive 10% Planning, Preparation and
Assessment time (PPA).
The PPA entitlement relates to the taught timetable of each individual teacher and can
only be allocated within the timetabled sessions. Further detail is outlined in
Appendix 1.
The intention of the Agreement is to support the continuation of the raising standards
agenda.
‘To achieve the demands of the next phase in raising standards, teachers will need to
take a more differentiated approach to the needs of their pupils. And yet they are
already doing too much of their planning, preparation and assessment at evenings
and weekends, and in isolation from each other. While this cannot be changed
overnight, the agreement marks a turning point in carving out some guaranteed PPA
time during the normal school day’.

Principles

• We are committed to the intentions of the Agreement and will seek to deliver it
ensuring that students benefit from wider curriculum experiences.
• We value and will develop the skills and experiences of our existing support
staff by offering training and opportunities for them to contribute to the
provision of PPA.
• We will reflect any additional responsibilities of support staff, arising from
PPA provision, in a system of remunerations.
• We will monitor the effects of the PPA provision on the standards achieved by
students.
• We will establish effective communication systems for all staff to contribute to
our review and improvement of the PPA scheme.
• Governors will be involved in the planning, provision and monitoring of the
PPA scheme.
• We are committed to communicating to the arrangements for PPA to parents
and the wider community.
• We will seek the agreement of all staff and publish information on the
operation of the PPA scheme at our school.
• We will monitor and report on the financial implications of the provision of
PPA.
Operation of the PPA scheme

• Staff are required to remain on the school premises during their PPA time.
• If the arranged cover for PPA is affected by unforeseen absence, alternative
arrangements will be made to protect the PPA entitlement. If this is impossible
or would result in Health and Safety concerns, the time will be reallocated
within 5 working days.
• All staff entitled to PPA time will be provided with a timetable on an annual
basis.
• NQTs will have a maximum 90% timetable to allow them release time to
undertake activities related to their induction. In addition to this they will
receive a further 10% of their timetabled teaching time as PPA.
