2) Abstract submitted for Oral presentation (90 minutes)

3) Presentation title:
Evoking the healing response by removing obstacles to cure:
Support for an evidence-based application in practice

4) Short description:
As health care evolves, examples of cost effective, outcome effective practices become ever more
important. Coming from independent research and clinical background, the presenters find
common ground in evoking the human healing response. Review of the literature, examples from
our respective experiences and implications for healthcare reform are all included.

6) Biographical sketch:

Dr Russell Jaffe, MD, Ph.D., CCN is a graduate of Boston University’s Liberal Arts, Medical and
Graduate Schools (1972). He completed internal medicine training at University Hospital and at
the Clinical Center of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He is board certified in Clinical
Pathology and subspecialty certified in Chemical Pathology. He helped found the Certified
Clinical Nutrition (CCN) training program. He apprenticed in traditional Chinese medicine and
acupuncture with Jing Wu and subsequently taught ‘Oriental Medicine Approaches in Western
Medical Practices’. He studied mindfulness with Venerable Bhante Dharmawara, President of the
World Buddhist Fellowship for 18 years. He developed the LRA by ELISA/ACT tests that allow
for determination of delayed allergies and hypersensitivities. He has published over 100 peer-
reviewed articles, invited textbook chapters, scientific presentations and abstracts. He has been
recognized as An International Scientist of the Year (2003), Best Physicians in America (2004-),
and with honors from his peer societies including the Merck Sharp and Dohme Excellence in
Research Award, the U S Public Health Services’ Researcher of the Year, and by a variety of
professional societies for his contributions to advancing their work. He is a Senior Fellow of the
Health Studies Collegium and Director of both ELISA/ACT Biotechnologies, LLC. and
PERQUE, LLC.
Learning objectives: The evidence for the human healing response is reviewed in light of
Naturopathic practice philosophy. A scientific, evidence based approach along with an empiric,
best outcomes methodology is used. Strengths and limits of Naturopathic practice are reviewed
and compared to Allopathic, Osteopathic, Homeopathic, and Integrative practice standards.

Presentation outline: As America moves toward affordable, effective health care, we present
experience with examples of such approaches in practice that are ready for wider application.
People can achieve better outcomes at lower cost and risk using these approaches. From diverse
backgrounds, the synergies that emerge when we each bring our perspectives to the benefit of the
patient are explored.

Common practice principles include:

1. Remove obstacles to recovery as highest therapeutic objective,
2. Put the patients welfare first,
3. Treat all as if they are dear to us,
4. Inform about the benefits of healthy habits,
5. Inspire action and monitor positive actions,
6. Exemplify health in the office and in ourselves,
7. Redressing causes of ill health is more effective than fighting disease symptoms or
consequences,
8. People do better when they directly relate the value rendered and received,
9. Personal engagement in self care and caring is highly rewarding,
10. Employ the least risky, most likely effective therapies first.

This presentation examines how this operates in our respective clinical worlds. Examples are
taken from chronic, autoimmune, degenerative diseases as well as cardiovascular, idiopathic, and
neoplastic.

Emphasis is on practice ready protocols and practice guides that improve compliance, motivation,
understanding, and outcomes. Evidence in favor of these approaches and their limitations are
explored. A 50,000 case database is used to assess applicability of promising suggestions from the
literature. Sustained remission from chronic illness is the rule rather than the exception when
these approaches are applied. Evidence is presented that restoration of healthy homeostasis
follows implementation of these therapeutic interventions in statistically significant, clinically
encouraging ways.

The literature of how much life and treasure can be saved by wider application of these
approaches will also be reviewed. We will include qualities that make for better choices in
therapeutic products, services and tests, e.g., full disclosure, standards of identity, good
manufacturing practices, post-production assays, bioavailability information, and clinical
evidence of cost effective efficacy. Pharmacy, scans, and tests will be included by example.

Target audience: Practitioners, researchers, students, policy makers, as well as history of science
and medicine specialists

<If desired, a half to full day workshop or a separate 60-90 minute presentation is available on the
details in actual practice building upon the above presentation.>
