Use symbolism, metaphors, similes, alliteration, etc. It adds life and interest to the poem. Freeverse is just using your feelings and writing. It has no rules. Tone is how the poem comes off to you. It lets the reader feel the emotion in the poem.

English 4A Ms. Cadag Poetry & Tone Step 3 Annotated Bibliography ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Drayton, Michael. Since Theres No Help. Perrines Literature: Structure, Sound, and Sense. Ed. Michael Rosenberg. Fort Worth: Harcourt Brace, 1998, 693. I read a poem called Since Theres No Help by Michael Drayton. It seemed like it was written a long time ago because of the language. The words were very different than what we use today. From what I read, it seemed that this was about a couple that just broke up. It sounded more angry than calm and okay. In the poem, the author said, And I am glad, yea, glad with all my heart, That thus so cleanly I myself can free. I think that this said that he felt trapped in that relationship and that now that theyre over, hes free. The tone of the poem, was relieved. I enjoyed this poem because I felt that a lot of people could probably relate to it, and I understood it really well. It wasnt difficult for me to read and understand.

Mathis, Cleopatra. Getting Out. (1980). Perrines Literature: Structure, Sound and Sense. Ed. Michael Rosenberg. Fort Worth: Harcourt Brace, 1998. 719.

The second poem I read is Getting Out by Cleopatra Mathis. The setting was in an apartment the majority of the poem. It was about a married couple that was so sick of each other, but still loved each other. In the beginning of the poem, it seemed like they really didnt like each other and they did not want anything to do with each other. But near the end, they got a divorce, but the poem said, Taking hands we walked apart, until our arms stretched between us. We held on tight, and let go. I think this says that even though they annoyed each other with their habits, they still love each other but dont want to keep fighting all the time. I really liked this poem because me and my boyfriend are a lot like this. We fight alot and we are completely different people, but we could never think of being without each other. When I read this, I thought about him, and I liked the fact that I could relate to it.
