Rap Battle Directions: Students will employ the characteristics of an argument with a classical structure by engaging in a rap battle with a partner. Characters must be very well-known such as a cartoon character, historical figure, or a famous person. Student will engage in and submit evidence of prewriting. Students must also complete and submit a formal outline (script) that is typed and follows MLA format. Both a rough draft of the outline and a peer review sheet must also be submitted. (Submit rubric, final copy of outline, prewrite, rough draft, peer review). Rap battles must be creatively presented in some way. Battles can be performed in class, pre-recorded, done as a Powerpoint with Screencast-O-Matic, uploaded to Youtube, created using Xtranormal, etc. Battles must engage the audience, contain a thesis, present reasonable arguments, refute the opponents arguments, and leave strong lasting impressions with a call for action. Each student must also submit a paragraph arguing for his/her teamwork grade by answering the following questions: What grade do you believe you deserve for teamwork? Did you do as much work as your partner? What tasks did you specifically complete yourself? If you were your partner, would you choose to work with yourself again? Why or why not? This paragraph is not necessary for students who work alone. Grammar and mechanics will also be graded for accuracy. Particular attention will be given to topics already covered in class. For the assignment, slang is permissible. However, inappropriate, offensive, and sexist language is not acceptable. Rap Battles must be kept PG rated.
