Introduction
This model is inspired by systems thinking. Systems thinking is a discipline that promotes holistic thinking. A system consists of many parts, all of which must work together in a coordinated manner to achieve its purpose. Examples of systems include human body, ecological systems, mechanical systems, and so on. A system has emergent properties which can not be understood by analysis alone. For example, just by understanding the properties of the digestive system or nervous system, one can not understand the behavior of a human being. A system has a boundary through which it interacts with the environment. The environment has influence over the behavior of the system. A coaching model must help an individual discover his potential and support him to realize it. The 5D coaching model is targeted towards executive coaching. It has 5 D's in it, namely Discover, Diagnose, Design, Develop, and Deploy. These 5D's are elaborated further below.

Discover
This step is the beginning of the coaching journey. The client or his organization decides that there is scope for the individual to go to a higher level of performance. The coach and the client sit together to discover the current state and the realizable potential. This step answers the question what is it that the client wants to achieve. Ideally the client should choose at least three goals. If the client's organization is the sponsor for the coaching, then their buy-in may be required. The suggested process is to let the client choose the goals and discuss them with his management.

Diagnose
This step is intended to support the coach and client in the discovery process. Tools like 360 degree feedback or strength finder or any other tool may be used to help in the discovery process. Discover and Diagnose steps run concurrently. The results of Diagnose step are fed back in to the Discovery process.

Design
After the discovery of the goals, we move in to the design phase, where the client designs the strategies to achieve the goals. Strategies are like the road maps. There may be more than one way to reach a goal. However, the client weighs the options, and chooses the best option. The role of the coach is to stretch and challenge the client to think differently and think out of the box. This step answers the question how to reach the goals

Develop
Once the strategies are decided, actions, based on them, are identified. The client is expected to come up with at least three action steps per strategy per goal. The role of the coach is to again challenge the client.

Deploy
Once the actions are identified, the client will perform those actions and discuss the outcomes with the coach. The commitment and tenacity of the client will come in to full play. The role of the coach is to support the client.

The Model
As shown in the diagram, the model is iterative in nature. Discover and Diagnose form a loop, meaning that Discover may prompt Diagnose and the results of Diagnose may influence Discover. Once the goals are discovered, the client moves in to design phase, in which strategies are chosen. Then client moves in to Develop phase. Develop and Deploy form a loop. The actions are performed. The results of the actions are reviewed and more actions are identified. As the client is performing the actions, he may realize that some strategies have to be reworked. It is also possible that as the coaching progresses, the client or his organization may want the goals to be tweaked. The 5D model allows that.

The Process
It is envisaged that the number of sessions will be between 6 and 12. The periodicity of the sessions will be between a week and four weeks. Each session will be for an hour.

Conclusion
The model is designed to move the client towards his goals. Feedback loops allow the client to constantly review the progress and apply mid-course corrections if required.
