Chapter 3 Introduction

In this chapter the task is all about application to vector data model. All we know that the vector are consist of point, line polygon. Here the task given is to make the student can manipulate and make the data model of the vector. Task 1(examine the data file structure of coverage and shape file) Objective: to view the data layer (feature classes) associated with coverage in arc catalog and examine its data structure shape file dare using window explore. Also convert the coverage into shape file and examine the shape file data structure. Procedure Open arc catalog access the chapter 3 from the tree select the coverage land .it will show the coverage contain arc label, polygon and tic. The preview for each features class can view by selected on the preview tab. Notice the order that given that each classes will correspond with its features classes. When right click the data of the task from the catalog tree properties been selected. As shown the coverage properties have 4 tab that: a) b) c) d) General tab: show the presence of topology for the polygon features class. Projection tab: show an unknown coordinate system Tics and extent tab: show the tics and extent of the coverage Tolerance tab: show the various tolerance value for editing and building topology.

When using the window explore to view a file. The folder generally contains arc data file(.adf) and some of these graphic files are recognizable by name, such as arc.adf for the polygon/arc list. The file is in binary files and cannot be read. To convert the files to shape file, arc tool box been use. There 2 options to convert the files. First option is to use feature class to shape file and second option is export function in data set context menu. Here the second option had been use.

Task 2 (create file geodatabase, features dataset, and features class). Objective: to create a file geodtabase and features dataset. To import the shape file into the features dataset as features classes and examine the data structure Procedure First is to make the geodatabase file. The folder that contain the data been right click then select new and select geodatabse. Then the file been rename. All this been done in arc catalog. Next to create the features dataset. The file that bee done before this been right click and selected new. Then select the features dataset. Then choose the name and coordinate projection The file will appear in the geodatabase.. right click the file to import it and select to features class multiple . In the gesodatabase file properties, it has 2 tabs. The general tab and domain tab. The domain use to establish valid values or valid range of value for an attribute to minimize data entry error.

Start arc Catalog - connect to folder chapter3

Right click chapter 3-new-file geodatabase -rename as task2.gdb. Right click task2.gdb-newfeature dataset

Name(area_1)-next

Projected coordinate system-UTM-NAD1927-NAd 1927 UTM Zone 11N-next

None-next

Finish.

Right click area_1 import feature class(multiple). Input elevzone.shp & stream.shp output area_1 ok

Right click task2.gdb propertise

Right click elevzone propertise show 10 tabs.

Task 3(convert shape file to a personal geodatabase features class) Objective: to update area and perimeter values of data by converting it into a features class in personal geodatabase. Procedure: In arc catalog, the file been selected. On the preview tab, the preview been changed into table. Then, make the personal geodatabase, the procedure same with the previous chapter. The result is when the file be preview the correct perimeter and area values will be show.

Arc catalog chapter 3-landsoil.shp

Preview type-table

Right click chapter 3 new personal geodatabase. Rename task3.mdb

Right click task3.mdb import feature class (single)

Input landsoil.shp. Output task3.mdb output feature class (landsoil) ok

Preview in table

Task 4(examine polylines with measure) Procedure: In this has arc map have been used. the data been added and open the attribute table to check the information that want to known. This steps is to add the identify route location tool. To make it appear, customize been selected from the tools menu. Then on the commands tab, selected category linear referencing next drag and drop the identify route location command to a tool bar in arc map. Then finish it by closed the dialog box. The identify route location command is to shows the measures values of the point that be selected as well as the minimum measurement, maximum measurement and other information.

Arc map rename data frame task 4 -

Add data -

Choose Decreasse24k.shp-

Right click decreasse24k.shp open attribute table

Right click decrease 24k properties

Routes tab - route identifier sr ok

Select customize menu customize mode command tab linear referencing identifier route location.

Drag to toolbar in arcmap

Select feature select a highway

Click identify route location, Result display information of selected highway

Task 5(view regions and route) Objective: to view the composite features as well the simple features of arc and polygon in the coverage. Procedure: If the selected data be expanding in the arc catalog, various type of layer will been show. The two basic layers are the region layer that represents regions subclass and the route as the layer of route subclass

In the arc map, the attribute table of the selected data will show the information.

Rename data frame- nhd 1

Add data polygon,region.lm,region.rch,region.wb. Right click region.lm open attribute table

Insert data frame Rename as nhd2 , Add data arc,route.drain,route.lm,route.rch

Right click route.rch open attribute table

Right click route.rch data export, As a shapefile

Task 6(view TIN) Objective: to view Tin Procedure: The data been added in arc map, then open the data properties. On the source tab, the data source frame show the number of nodes and the elevation range. On the symbology tab, unchecked the elevation then clicked the add button in the show frame. A dialog appear then, highlighted edges with the same symbol and click add. Arcmap rename data frame task 6

Add data - emidatin

Right click emidatin propertise, Symbology -

Uncheck elevation -

Select add , Select edges with the same symbol add, Show triangle (faces)

Conclusion
In task 1 it all about the converting the coverage into a shape file and then examine the data structure of the coverage and shape file. Then, in task 2 it discuss about how to work with basic elements of the file geodatabase. Task is show how to update the area and perimeter values of a polygon shape file by converting it into personal geodatabase features class. Then, in task 4, it teaches how to view routes in the form of polylines with m values. In task 5, it shows how to view regions and routes subclass. Lastly in task 6, lets us view a Tin in arc catalog and arc map.
