Creating Conversations
Creating Conversations is the second of three projects launched by 30 Seconds of Change. Through Creating Conversations, our team aims to demonstrate the importance of engaging in a dialogue and discussing the challenging issues that a community face. In November 2012, the 30 Seconds of Change team met with Ryan and Adelyn Hall, two Peace Corps Volunteers who work at Malindza Refugee Camp in Swaziland. Through the program, Creating Conversations 30 Seconds of Change members at the United World College of Southern Africa will develop workshops and organize workshops with the refugees which focus the most pressing needs of the camp. In early December, Adelyn and Ryan met with 50 residents at Malindza, and collectively outlined ten capacity building projects. Several of these projects include sanitation/hygiene, permaculture training, sports teams and how to deal with mourning. The discussions between students in 30 Seconds and the refugees at Malindza continue to emphasize the importance of conversations - conversations which compel us to think, and re-think how to drive change.
Amongst the twenty or so refugees we spoke with, all were engaged in changing the conversation and actively participating in 30 Seconds of Change in order to raise awareness and improve their situation. Although Soa Gomez-Doyle will begin her universities in 2013 and will no longer attend the United World College of Southern Africa, Tatenda Mashanda, Harvey K and Shadrack Chemane will create a 30 Seconds club to engage students in the UWCSA community. Currently, there are three workshops scheduled at Malindza Refugee Camp in February 2013.
Youth Connections
Finally, 30 Seconds of Change is in discussion with Jasmine Baldi, a Syrian organization that works with refugee children. We are attempting to connect with youth whose schools have been destroyed and whose education has been severely disrupted. In the coming months, we are hoping to establish links between Syria, Swaziland, Chicago, Zimbabwe and Tanzania in order to provide support, create opportunities, and trigger a youth inspired movement.
