The faith-filled parishioners of Saint Joseph Catholic Church of Arma, in union with the Blessed Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, value tradition and prayer. We seek to become a more diverse, vibrant, active church family. Notes from the Pastor: Where did the time go? Its now February and in two weeks time we will be in the season of Lent. This reminds us once more that we dont own the time and so we have to value it by giving priority to what we believe is most important. On this regard, I commend once more all our volunteers in all aspects of our parish life for giving value to all that we do and sticking to their commitments to their ministry. To help you plan ahead: February 13 is Ash Wednesday! Reminder again that it is a day of fasting and abstinence. These spiritual exercises help us in to ways: as a form of penance for our sins and the sins of other people, especially the sin of abortion, and also as a means for us to grow in holiness. Our Lord Jesus himself fasted in the desert before he started his mission. Our schedule for Ash Wednesday: 7AM mass in Girard, 8AM mass in Arma, 12Noon mass in Arma, 6:30 PM mass in Girard. All these masses have imposition of ashes. At 3:15 PM, our PSR kids will have their station of the cross in Church and followed by imposition of ashes. Everybody is welcome. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Lots of people are sick nowadays. Three of our chaperones for March For Life also got sick while they were there in DC. Let us pray for their quick recovery. It is timely as we celebrate this weekend the feast of Saint Blaise. As has been the tradition of the Church we use the two blessed candles laid across the throat of the person asking for the saints intercession. Through the centuries his miraculous intercession has been experienced by many. Also February 11 is the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. Since 1992, the Catholic Church has celebrated World Day of the Sick on Feb. 11. World Day of the Sick has three consistent themes. First, it reminds the faithful to pray intensely and sincerely for those who are sick. Second, the celebration invites Christians to reflect on and respond to human suffering. And third, this day recognizes and honors all persons who work in health care and serve as caregivers. This year 2013, the liturgical memorial of Our Lady of Lourdes, the 21st World Day of the Sick will be solemnly celebrated at the Marian Shrine of Alttting in Germany. In a message for the 2013 World Day of the Sick, Pope Benedict XVI calls on everyone to be a good Samaritan and concretely help those in need. Thanking those who care for the sick and elderly, the pope underlines the church's fundamental role in "lovingly and generously accepting every human being, especially those who are weak and sick." While in prison, the soldiers tortured him in an effort to get him to renounce his Catholic faith, but it didnt happen. They stretched him on a rack, tore his flesh with an iron comb, but he wouldnt budge. Finally, in 316, they beheaded him. His feast day is this weekend, Sunday, the 3rd. Because it falls on Sunday, the holy day liturgy will probably take precedence. The Church offers us the blessing of the throat by holding two candles in the form of a St. Andrews Cross, while the priest prays: Through the intercession of St. Blaise, Bishop and Martyr, may God deliver you from ailments of the throat, and from every other evil. I recall Fr. Thissens words on this: There is nothing superstitious about this blessing. It must be approached with faith. In this blessing, the KEY WORD is intercession, because thats what the saints do for us-they intercede for us with the Father. We forget the CENTRALITY of our throats, the center of life itself--air and food pass through here. Also speech is located here. And the last words are important also: and every other evil. When we say AMEN, were saying, Yes, I accept this blessing. The essential thing to remember here is not so much the fishbone, but the fact that were dependent on God for our lives--every day that we live.
