SHERLOCK HOLMES AND THE DUKES SON ABOUT THE AUTHOR SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE Sir Arthur

Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He studied medicine and worked as a doctor for eight years. But he needed more money, so he began writing short stories for weekly magazines. CHARACTER ANALYSIS Dr. Thorneycroft Huxtable He was a large man, tall, well-dressed, and important looking. He is a professor and has a school for boys in the north of England. When the Duke of Holdernesse decides to send his young son there, that is good news for the school. The Duke is a very important person, and Dr Huxtable is happy to have his son in the school. But two weeks later Dr Huxtable is the unhappiest man in England. Because someone has kidnapped the Duke's son . . . He's worried about a missing student and, hires Sherlock Holmes to find the kid. Sherlock Holmes A strange, but very clever detective, who smokes a pipe, plays the violin, and lives at 221B Baker Street in Londan. He can find the answer to almost any problem, and likes to explain how easy it is to his slow-thinking friend, Dr Watson.. Dr Watson Dr Watson always helped Sherlock Holmes in every mystery. Duke of Holdernesse The Duke is not a friendly man. Hes not a bad father (The Duke is the father of the missing boy) , but he is a Government Minister and has a lot of things to do. He is a tall man with a long, thin face. He had red hair, and a great red beard. Also he is one of the greatest and one of the richest men in the country.

James Wilder Mr. Wilder is a very young man. He was small, with blue eyes, and a watchful face. First; we think that Wilder is Dukes secretary. However, The Duke explains that Wilder is actually his son too. That is why, Wilder decides to kidnap his younger brother, hoping

to blackmail his father the duke. Wilder is a jealous and man and it leads him to get involved with some shady people when he plans his younger brother's kidnapping. Lord Saltire (Arthur) He is ten years old. On the 1st of May young Lord Saltire arrived the Priory School near Mackleton. Hes a nice boy, and he soon began to like school life and to make friends.His life at home was not very happy. Because the Duchess left the Duke. The Duchess of Holdernesse The Duchess lives in the South of France. She left the Duke. Professor Heidegger Hes a good German teacher, but the boys dont like him because he isnt very friendly. Heidegger bravely chases after Lord Saltire when he realizes there's something bad happening. He goes after the boy on his bike but he is killed by the kidnappers in his effort to rescue the boy. Reuben Hayes He is the kidnapper that James hires to take Lord Saltire, and he is also the man who kills poor professor Heidegger. Hayes is very rude to Holmes and Watson.

Personal response : I love it same as other Sherlock Holmes series. The process of finding answer to every mystery was really exciting. If you are learning English, enjoy a great story, have fun, and improve your language with this version of Sherlock Holmes and the Duke's Son.
