PART B Answer 2 questions from each Module. Each question carries 10 marks. MODULE I 11. a) Derive an expression for the coefficient of coupling. b) A ring has a mean diameter of 21 cm and a cross sectional area of 10 cm2. The ring is made up of semi-circular sections of cast iron and cast steel, with each joint having a reluctance equal to an air gap of 0.2 mm. Find the ampere turns required to produce a flux of 810 4 Wb. The relative permeabilities of cast steel and cast iron are 800 and 166 respectively. Neglect fringing and leakage effects. 12. a) Calculate the RMS value of the half rectified sinusoidal voltage wave shown below :

b) Find the reading of the ammeter when the voltmeter across the 3 resistor reads 45 V in the circuit shown below :

13. a) Derive the voltage current relationship under steady state conditions when sinusoidal voltage is applied to pure 1) resistance, 2) inductance and 3) capacitance. b) A circuit takes a current of 4A at a p.f. of 0.6 lagging when connected to a 150 V, 50 Hz supply. Another circuit takes a current of 6A at a p.f. of 0.8 leading when connected to the same supply. If these two circuits are connected in series across 230 V, 50 Hz supply, calculate the current drawn from the supply. 14. a) Derive the relationship between live and phase quantities in a 3 - phase balanced star network and hence obtain the formula for 3 - phase power. b) Three equal impedances are connected to a 3 phase 400 V, 50 Hz supply. If the resistance and inductive reactance of each branch are 30 and 40 respectively. Calculate : i) Line current ii) Total power consumed. MODULE II 15. With a neat block diagram, explain the method of power generation in a thermal power plant. 16. a) Define the terms load factor, demand factor, diversity factor and plant factor. b) A power station has a maximum demand of 40 MW, a load factor of 0.6, plant capacity factor of 0.48 and plant use factor of 85%. Find : 1) The daily energy produced 2) Reserve capacity of the plant 3) Maximum energy that could be produced daily if the plant were in use all the time. 17. a) Explain with a neat schematic diagram, a typical power transmission scheme. b) Explain briefly the different substation equipments.
