fact that for the students, the second language is not a major subject, and, as such, not a priority, one cannot hope to stuff them with matter for learning. A basic level of competence in French is sufficient. What matters is that the student should be able to fluently converse within this limited sphere. WRITTEN EXPRESSION Knowing a language signifies that the student should be able to communicate in writing where the situation demands. For example, he may be required to write out a small message, a note, give a description, etc. For all this, he should have a basic concept of the laws governing the French language. WRITTEN COMPREHENSION This is one of the most important concepts in the process of language learning. At any given time, the student will have to meet situations where he is required to understand messages, warnings, even obey rules and regulations that are given in writing in public places. Besides, reading plays a key role in any form of learning and as such, the student should be expected to understand books in simple French that will, in turn, help him improve his language skills. CULTURAL CONTENT Since every language is intimately linked with the cultural background of the country where it has originated. It is imperative that the students of the French language be aware of the various hues and shades of French culture and civilization. INTERCULTURAL NOTIONS It is not enough to know about the cultural backdrop of the foreign language in question, acceptance of the same is important. For this, it is important that the student be able to compare and contrast the cultural highlights of the foreign language with his own cultural identity. When it comes to a European language like French, there are very deep cultural differences so as to even shock a learner. The learner should acquire basic communicative skills in the four dimensions, i.e, oral and written expression and comprehension. To reach this level, he should have :

A knowledge of the basic notions of grammar. A stock of vocabulary which permits the student to be able to express himself and understand the basic terms pertaining to the topics of discussion. A set of basic situations where communication is most likely to take place. For example: introducing himself, asking and answering questions on time and place, directions, etc. detailing his likes and preferences, expressing his agreement or disapproval, giving information, etc. A knowledge of some of the important notions on day to day life in France.
