Homework #1 (Voluntary Submission) Part I Please attempt the following questions from your textbook Probability and Random Processes for Electrical Engineering, 2nd Edition, by Alberto Leon Garcia, Pearson Education. Specifying Random Experiments Questions: 2, 8, 13 The Axioms of Probability Questions: 16, 18, 19, 25, 28.a Computing Probabilities using counting methods Questions: 32, 33, 41, 47 Conditional Probability Questions: 49, 50, 57, 60 Independence of Events Questions: 63, 64, 69 Sequential Experiments Questions: 71, 73 Part II The following questions are courtesy Probability and Statistics for Engineers and Scientists 8th Edition, by Ronal E. Walpole, Raymond H. Meyers, Sharon L. Meyers & K. Ye, Pearson Education International. Question 1: Suppose that we have a fuse box containing 20 fuses, of which 5 are defective. If 2 fuses are selected at random and removed from the box in succession without replacing the rst, what is the probability that both fuses are defective? Question 2: Three cards are drawn in succession, without replacement, from an ordinary deck of playing cards. Find the probability that the event A1 A2 A3 occurs, where A1 is the event that the rst card is a red ace, A2 is the event that the second card is a 10 or a jack, and A3 is the event that the third card is greater than 3 but less than 7. Question 3: The probability that a doctor correctly diagnoses a particular illness is 0.7. Given that the doctor makes an incorrect diagnosis, the probability that the patient enters a law suit is 0.9. What is the probability that the doctor makes an incorrect diagnosis and the patient sues? Question 4: The diagram of an electrical system, comprising of 4 components (A, B, C, D) is as given in Figure 1. Each components probability of working properly (i.e. not failing) is as shown in each box . What is the probability that the system works? Assume the components fail independently. Question 5: From a group of 4 men and 5 women, how many committees of size 3 are possible (a) with no restrictions? (b) with 1 man and 2 women? (c) with 2 men and 1 woman if a certain man must be on the committee? Question 6: What is the probability that no two students will have the same birth date in a size of 60 class? Hint: Consider selecting 60 birthdays as permutations from 365 days. You may use Stirlings formula for factorial calculation.
