Cape Town is a city like no other. Over the years, I have watched so many visitors fall in love with this multilayered, intriguing place and I have often contemplated what it is that draws people so instinctively and emotionally to this relatively tiny tip of Africa. Yes, its a beautiful city, with an unfair share of architecturally poised mountains and coastlines to sun-worship, meditate, explore and play on. It has big open skies to lose your thoughts in and an abundance of endemic flora in our fynbos kingdom. And yes, we can boast some must-visit, iconic gems, such as Table Mountain (now a New7Wonder of Nature), Robben Island, Cape Point, the V & A Waterfront, Boulders Beach, the Winelands, the Two Oceans Aquarium and Kirstenbosch Gardens. But the unspoken allure of Cape Town lies in the unexpected details. The coffee shops from which you can people-watch or the speciality shop or market stallholder who bristles with pride over his or her wares. Its in the faces of children alive with the spirit of vibrant communities as they play on a dusty township soccer field, and in the face of the jazz musician with a long, long story to tell. Its the juxtaposition of globally mobile phones and quiet places of memory and knowledge where we pause to reflect on what has gone before. As Cape Town approaches her year as World Design Capital 2014, I have begun to think that the reason Cape Town is so appealing is that its a city of raw, authentic, creative energy a place with hurts, but also a place intent on healing. We are moving towards transformation as we re-imagine and reinvent our future through the ideas and inventions of our brightest minds and ordinary yet most incredible people. Minibus taxis offer convenient but sometimes hairraising transport along major routes. They are frequently available and inexpensive. Private taxis can also be booked through Cape Town Tourism (021 487 6800). All major car-hire companies operate from the airport and have city depots. MONEY MATTERS Currency: South African Rand (ZAR, or R0.00). 100 cents = R1.00 Value-Added Tax (VAT): South Africa has a value- added tax of 14% on purchases and services. Foreign visitors can reclaim their VAT on collective purchases of more than R250.00 at a number of refund offices around the city. The VAT refund office is located at Cape Town International Airport (021 937 1200). Banking hours: 09h00 to 15h30 (weekdays) and 08h30 to 11h00 (Saturdays). LEARN THE LANGUAGE There has been a phenomenal increase in foreign-language visitors to Cape Town over the past decade, with many opting to stay longer than they had originally planned. As a result, there has been a growth of institutions where one can learn English as a second language. Education South Africa (EduSA edusouthafrica.com) ensures standards of quality and professionalism, affiliation to international organisations, exciting social programmes and the opportunity to learn more than just a language. Choices include preparation for tertiary institutions, volunteer work placement, learning English on safari and more. PRACTICAL SAFETY TIPS Avoid carrying large sums of cash, carrying cameras in plain sight and leaving belongings unattended. Heed the advice of your hosts, Cape Town Tourism Visitor Centre staff or locals on where to go (and which places to avoid) after dark. Try not to walk alone, and take special precautions at lonely lookout points, especially at dusk or at night. Dont allow strangers to assist you in any way at ATMs. Street children and beggars may approach you for a handout. Many social workers counsel against giving money to the children as it is usually handed over to an older person or is used to purchase drugs. If you wish to do good, rather give food, donate your change to a registered charity, or contact Cape Town Tourism for advice. At night, park in a secure, well-lit area. Keep photocopies of all valuable documents in a safe place. SAFETY IN TABLE MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK Cape Town Tourism recommends the use of a qualified mountain guide should you wish to explore Table Mountain National Park on foot. Alternatively, make sure you take a Table Mountain map, comfortable walking shoes, a few friends and a charged mobile phone. Make sure you are also prepared for weather that can change rapidly. Bring along sunblock as well as something warm to wear. Start heading back well before dark and keep to the demarcated paths.

For the most part, they lie at the base of Table Mountain National Park, a mountainous backbone that stretches all the way from Signal Hill to Cape Point.
