At the beginning of the 16th century, North America was inhabited by American Indians. No Europeans had explored this territory but French, Spanish and English sailors* had approached its coasts and were fishing in the mouth of the St Lorenzo river. Between 1534 and 1542, a French navigator, Jacques Cartier, went up this river and met some Indians. He realised they lived in a vast and very rich territory although he didnt find gold or diamonds, so the French king at the time, who was supporting him financially, was disappointed. Some time later, Samuel Champlain went on exploring the region. He dreamt of finding a passage to China in this area but he never found it because of the size of the continent. In 1604 a group of French men and women settled down on the coast and were the first Europeans to live year-round in the area. In 1608 Quebec was founded and commerce with animal skins was begun.

Us proposem algunes respostes, per tamb es considera correcta qualsevol altra que sigui coherent i demostri la comprensi del text.

a)

Why do you think it was difficult to be a sailor in the 16th century? Suggested answer I think it was difficult because the boats were less resistant/strong than they are now. In the 16th century it was more dangerous to travel because they didnt have maps for this area, they didnt know what there was in the territory. It was also difficult because they could get ill more easily and the doctors were not as good as they are now.

b)

Would you like to be a sailor? Why? Suggested answer I would like to be a sailor because I like adventure / discovering new places / meeting new people / learning about other cultures. O b: I would not like to be a sailor because it is too dangerous and you cannot see your friends/family for a long time.

The school Gandhi Ashram is a school for the untouchables. In India, society is divided into several groups, called castes. The untouchables are the poorest of the poorest. Most Indians dont want to be with them and think they are stupid and dirty. However, there are people who love them and try to help them. A Canadian priest founded Gandhi Ashram school in 1994. He realised that learning music helped poor children. In contact with a violin, the children who at first were timid and introverted, gained some self-confidence. They realised they were also intelligent and so they wanted to learn more. In this school, the children also learn to read, write, and count. Then, they go on learning English and Nepalese, the language of the region. Their parents are very proud, especially because they didnt have this opportunity when they were little.
