IMMIGRATION LEGAL INTERN Position description: This solo-attorney law firm represents families in the immigration system and

defends individuals from deportation in immigration court. The Intern will work with clients from around the world and learn the fundamentals of practicing law. The Intern will work under the direct supervision on the managing attorney. Through hands-on work and observation, this is an exceptional opportunity to learn the fundamentals of practicing law. The Intern will have the opportunity to learn client counseling skills from attending client consultations and will learn the fundamentals of advocacy from participating in case strategy sessions with the attorney. The Interns primary responsibility will be to function as support for the managing attorney, as described below. The Intern will be held to strict standards of professional responsibility and the first two weeks of the internship will focus on learning the fundamentals of legal ethics. This internship is most appropriate for a student interested in pursuing a career in law, whether as an attorney or in another professional capacity. Law schools routinely accept students from many different majors and no major will be given preferential treatment for this internship. For purposes of accreditation you will be required to write a substantive paper relating to this position; you will need to work with a profession to complete this part of the internship. For purposes of the paper it may be most appropriate to approach a professor in one of the following fields, though you are not required to be majoring in one of them: ethnic studies; gender, women and sexuality studies; law, societies and justice, philosophy political science; or psychology (the attorney supervisor has a research interest in forensic psychology). Communicate with clients to assist in obtaining documents required for their immigration process (e.g., school records, declarations from friends). Greet clients at the firm and prepare them for consultation with the attorney. Request criminal records from courts and law enforcement agencies. Draft immigration law applications for clients. Assemble application packets with evidentiary documentation. Prepare correspondences from dictation or instruction. Review written materials for grammatical and typographic errors. Receive and direct incoming phone calls, including from clients and attorneys.

These tasks will require the Intern to develop fundamental attributes critical to the practice of law, including: attention to detail; professionalism in client interaction; resourcefulness and problem solving; and ability to follow strict legal protocols and office procedures. Learning opportunities: In addition to the tasks described above, the Intern will have the opportunity to participate in the following firm functions for the sole purpose of educational value: Training on professional ethics. Instruction on law practice fundamentals including case documentation and document management, Client consultations for purpose of developing counseling skills. Case strategy sessions for the opportunity to learn substantive immigration law, issuespotting and legal problem solving. Attending immigration court proceedings and/or immigration service client interviews for training in advocacy.

Experience: Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated proficiency working in an office environment, especially one involving confidential or private information. Experience in service jobs will also be given consideration. Applicants need not have a demonstrated interest in immigration law specifically, but must be comfortable working with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds. Qualifications: Applicants must be sophomore year or higher. The following skills are helpful, but the strongest consideration will be given to an applicants personal ethics and comportment. Energy and creativity. Excellent professional comportment. Keen attention to detail and ability to follow detailed instructions.

Excellent communication skills in person and by digital media. Spanish-language fluency would be helpful but is not required. Superior writing skills (both for your own writing and for editing). Proficiency with social media. Demonstrated ability to learn and implement new software systems. Proficiency with Microsoft Word. Familiarity with Google products (gmail, voice, calendar, tasks).

Hours and location: This internship is offered for 15 hours per week, but candidates may propose a schedule of between of 10 to 20. Work hours must be scheduled in advance and during the work week. The law firm is located near downtown Tacoma on the waterfront (535 Dock St., Suite 200, Tacoma, WA 98402).
