The Four Noble Truths of Buddhism is stated in this book on page 29, which is used as a primary source. The four statements expresses the Buddhas teaching. The statements all led to a general theme, about suffering and becoming enlightened. This source proves why many people in China practice Buddhism. Ganeri, Anita. Buddhism. New York: Peter Bedrick Books, 1997. An ancient document from the Diamond Sutra, it is one of the most important Mahayana sacred sutra. In the Diamond Sutra, it tells when a person dedicates lifetimes into charitable acts and reading sutras, it will pass on to other people and the world will be in harmony. The importance about sutras is to teach the Buddhists how to achieve enlightenment. There are many other sutras, and they are often read in temples in unison. Using color photographs and detailed illustrations, this book helped me have a better understanding of a particular historical era, religion, or culture. Ch'en, Kenneth. Buddhism in China: A Historical Survey. New Jersey: Princeton University Press, 1964. This book was extremely helpful to me, a lot of my knowledge was based on this book. It is once written by a professor at Princeton University. This book help me very much because it tend to only focus on Buddhism in China. It went into a lot of detail instead of other books that only has a section on my topic. Many primary sources were in there, including sutras and quotes from ancient Chinese figures. The conclusion part about the books was the most helpful, it illustrated contributions that Buddhism made in China. It was broken down into sections including literature, arts and architecture, philosophy, landscape painting, astronomy and calendar, and medicine. Yen, Chan Master Sheng. Footprints in the snow. New York: The Doubleday Publishing Group, 2008. This book is an autobiography of Master Sheng Yen, which tells his experience growing up as a kid and how he became interested in Buddhism. Growing up, Master Sheng Yen was really impoverished. He was not very successful in school, but then he found his path in life when he was accepted into a Buddhist monatery. Whats more intriging is that, Master Sheng Yen was the master of both the people I interviewed for my project.
