Behavioural and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD) is multi-facet in nature and encompassing a number of management modalities. Persons with dementia have difficulty to express their needs and distress. BPSD can be very distressing for patients and challenging for caregivers. The caregivers require to understand the presumed causes of BPSD by a full and careful assessment of possible physical, psychological environmental factors; and to intervene appropriately by using validated caring techniques. In this one-and-half day seminar, the facilitators will present the advances of treatment of dementia and conceptual frameworks for care of the BSPD. As the non-pharmacological interventions should be considered as first-line in dealing with BPSD; and a guided care protocol which is based on the 4D approach of The Johns Hopkins Neuropsychiatry and Memory Group, the John Hopkins University and the recommendation of the Practice Parameter: Management of Dementia by the Quality Standard Subcommittee of the American Academy of neurology, will be introduced.
