EUPHEMISM FORM IN LIO LANGUAGE

INTRODUCTION

The word euphemism derives from Greek language, that is eu meaning good and pheme meaning speaking.1 Simply, we can say that euphemism is the way to speak about something by choosing the word that has good meaning. If we talk about euphemism in terms of linguistics, it is a kind of figurative language that is most often used in order to be politically correct. The words or phrases that are used as substitutes for coarse language or words that are considered too blunt or direct and which may have negative, offensive or distressing connotations. For example, instead of using the term dead person the euphemism deceased is often preferable. Euphemisms are often used to put a more positive slant on terms that may offend or insult some people, for example, replacing the term housewife with home-maker and garbage collector with garbologist. Ende society as part of speech communities in NTT also uses euphemism in social interaction among them. It is used to elude the using of taboo or bad words and or to give respect from the speaker to another person as the message receiver.

These data are obtained by interviewing the writers father. Beside that, some phrase like mera ngange kee, ate hiro haro, mae pole miku, mesu lele pemu are obtained by listening Gawi song and translating them. From the data, we conclude that euphemism words in Lio language are in phrase form. Those euphemisms will be used in speech act when the speaker is younger than the hearer and or the speaker is the low social class than the hearer.

III.

CONCLUSION

Same with another regions or countries that use euphemism in their speech act and or speech event, so does Ende society. It has much euphemism in phrase form than euphemism in one word form that we always find in English. Some data above which are obtained from Gawi lyric show that much euphemism form in phrase can be found in Ende society literary or art performance.
