A Grimm Hell
My hell project is themed around Grimms Fairy Tales, and the characters are in hell depending on what sin they committed. I decided I wanted to do a book-themed hell almost right away, but I wasnt sure what book to use. I chose Grimms Fairy Tales because I really love that book and its also perfect for finding 27 people to put in hell. My guide is the Fisherman, from the story The Fisherman and His Wife. The Fishermans greedy wife makes him ask wishes of a talking flounder (enchanted prince), but she asks too much and eventually all the wishes are reversed. I chose the Fisherman as my guide because he is very humble (he doesnt really want to be rich, he just wants to fish), and he is a go-with-the-flow type of person. The Judge is the Fox from the story The Golden Bird. He is really an enchanted prince, but he still helps a young prince with his search for the golden birdeven when the boy gets into trouble. The Fox is eventually set free and returns to his human form. I chose the Fox as judge because he continuously helps good people (even when they get into deep trouble), and he knows very well how to pick out the bad from the good. The number of times the Fox barks is which circle the sinner will be sent to. Circle one contains souls guilty of envy, which led them to do worse deeds. The contrapasso for circle one is empty space. The souls are naked, with no possessions, and they float around in the black empty space. There is no light, no warmth, no colors, no sound, not even scents. Nothing is there that could make the souls envy each other, but everything is there to make the souls envy the world of the living. The three sinners are the Cook, the Waiting-Woman, and the Stepsister. The Stepsister is from the story Sweetheart Roland. She is jealous of her adopted sisters apron, so she conspires with her mother to behead the girl while she sleeps. Her mother creeps in at night and chops the nearest girls head off, which turns out to be her own daughters instead of her stepdaughters.

Circle 2 contains the liars and the tricksters. These people used lying as a way to trick people into getting what they wanted so they wouldnt get caught, nevermind the affects their actions would have on other people. The contrapasso for circle 2 is transparency. The souls are transparent, and they can only speak the truth. Not only are their bodies transparent, but so are their minds and intentions. As they were as thick as thieves in life, so they are the opposite in death. The sinners are the 12 dancing princesses, the Cat, and the Wolf. The 12 dancing princesses are from the story The Twelve Dancing Princesses. They lied to their father about going dancing at night, and they tricked the princes and suitors who came to find out where they went; which resulted in the princes head being cut off. Circle 3 contains the greedy people. These people have gone lengths to get what they want, usually to the detriment of others. The contrapasso for the third circle is a tall mountain with gold on the top. The souls are dressed in rags, and they must climb towards the top of a mountain with gold at the peak, but right before they get to the top they trip and fall all the way back down. The sinners are the Fishermans Wife, King Thrushbeards Queen, and the King with the golden apple tree. The Fisherman was fishing one day when he caught a talking flounder, which he promptly set free again. When he got home and told his wife of the fish, she ordered him to go back to it and ask for a nice cottage to live in. The Fisherman obliged, and the fish granted her wish. She kept sending the Fisherman back again and again, until when she asked to be king of the universe and the flounder reversed all the wishes hed granted. Circle 4 harbors the thieves. These people couldve stolen something physical or conceptual from someone else. The contrapasso for the fourth circle is a general lack of possessions. The souls are naked, and the only thing they have is 3 gold coins which they continuously steal from each other. The sinners are Rumpelstiltskin, the Witch who stole Jorinda, and Rapunzels real

mother. Rapunzels mother and father lived next to a witch who had a garden of rampion, which the mother craved so much she started withering away at the thought of not having it. Her husband, becoming worried, hopped over the fence and stole some rampion for his wife so she would not die. This sequence of events landed Rapunzel in a tall prison tower which she was forced to grow up in. Circle 5 is for plagiarism. These souls have literally taken credit for someone elses hard

labor,

and used that to become successful and rich so they no longer have to work a single day for the rest of their lives. The contrapasso for this is hard labor. The souls must work for a demon king who takes credit for himself, then throws them into a deep pit which they must crawl out of and begin anew. The pit represents the hard way to the top, which they completely skipped by taking credit for someone elses hard work. The sinners are the Queen from Rumpelstiltskin, the Queen from the 3 spinning fairies, and the Boy who ate the white snake. The Queen from the 3 spinning fairies was so lazy when she was young that her mother beat her. The queen at the time heard, and the mother lied that she couldnt get her daughter to stop spinning thread. The girl ended up getting saved from doing anything by the 3 spinning fairies, who did all the work for her and let her take the credit, which led to her marrying the prince and later becoming queen. Circle 6 contains the souls who were extremely cruel to others. The contrapasso is they must beat each other with walking sticks until they need to use them to walk, after which they must start all over again. Thumbling went from being a midget no larger than a thumb to a giant as tall as a mansion. When he was large and powerful, he asked his employer to pay him in beatings instead of money. For however many hours Thumbling worked, he would beat his employer that many times.

Circle seven contains souls who attempted murder. The contrapasso for this circle is blood rain, and at night the souls have nightmares of the people they attempted to kill. The sinners are the 13th fairy, the Witch from Sweetheart Roland, and the evil Queen who convinced her son to condemn his wife (whom he loved) to death. The 13th fairy, from Briar Rose, cast a spell on a baby Briar Rose so she would prick her finger on a spindle and die on her 16th birthday. Circle 8 contains the betrayers. They betrayed their lover or family by leaving or hurting them. The contrapasso for the 8th circle is the sinners all sit around a table, with everything bad they have ever done, along with all their secrets, written on papers that lay on each plate. Nothing about them is a secret. The sinners are Sweetheart Roland, and the 2 elder brothers from the Golden Bird. When their younger brother came back successful, with riches and a Princess to boot, they stole everything from him and threw him into a well. Circle 9 contains murderers and people who attempted to murder someone they loved or were close to. The contrapasso is the victims are zombies who cry out to the ghosts and wail as loud as they can in anguish, and if the souls do not respond the zombies begin to devour them until they scream for mercy loud enough. The sinners always heal so that they cannot be completely eaten up, and the zombies do not decay completely so they can still be clearly recognized.
