Keeping Company
I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people (1 Corinthians 5:9). We have not come to our conclusions, about the right and wrong of life, overnight. It took time to shape us. Let there be no doubt that we are, in a large way, a product of many influences. Jesus had already warned his disciples that they needed to be aware of the leavening power of ungodly things (Matthew 16:6). Paul offers the same warnings and explanations in the preceding three verses (68). They knew (and I think we do too) that we are influenced by our associations. Godly associations are one of the primary driving forces of a well lived life. The same kind of effect is true of the lesser associations. We tend to think that we will not be changed by the forces around us. Wrong! There is really no such thing as a static relationship. Either we are being an influence, or we are being influenced. Sometimes both things are happening. While a righteous person may improve the character of the worldly individual, the converse may be happening at the same time. Compromise is a loss for the righteous. There is no room for the Christian to become or think like the world. The more we confront ourselves with the character of the world by close associations, the more we tend to allow that character to influence our lives. Too many Christians have lost their way because of the influence of a friend, family member, or a mate. There is a lot of morally reprehensible behavior trying to influence us. Whether it is directly from people around us, our associates, or through our entertainment. makes little difference. We have been warned. Russ
