Keyboard

We can type by pressing keys on the keyboard of a computer. Using the keyboard you can type alphabets, numbers and enter them into the computer. Thus, a keyboard is an input device through which data is entered into the CPU of a computer.

Monitor
A monitor is an output device. It displays the result of the task performed by the computer. You can also watch movies and cartoon films on a monitor.

The result displayed on the screen of the monitor is called the soft copy of the output.

This part of the CPU does all the arithmetic calculations and logical comparisons.

Control Unit
Imagine the scene at a cross road without a traffic policeman or signals. If there were no traffic signals or policeman, then every person would like to proceed first and this would result in a traffic jam. The traffic policeman or signals control the movement of vehicles and maintain order. Similarly, the Control Unit inside a computer controls the movement of information between the memory, the ALU and other portions of the machine. Oxford University Press, 2007

Memory
Just as the lessons you learn at school are stored in your brain, the computer also has a brain, where it stores the information or data entered. This part of the computer is called memory. The information in the memory can be changed or erased. It can also be retrieved, i.e., got back when needed.

Mouse
The important mouse actions are: Click To click, gently press the mouse button and release it. Double-click To double-click, gently press the left mouse button twice within a short period of time and release it. Drag-and-Drop We use drag-and-drop to move an item from one position to another on the computer monitor using a computer mouse.

Printer

A printer is an output device.

It is used to take printouts.


This is called the hard copy of the output.

Memory

Tricky Terms
Computer A computer is a machine made up of devices that help you enter data, process it, store it and output the results.

Output The results given by the computer after processing the data is called the output. Soft copy The result displayed on the screen of the monitor is called the soft copy of the output.

Hard copy The output can also be printed on paper using a printer. This is called the hard copy of the output. Hardware Hardware refers to that part of a computer which you can feel or touch. The CPU, monitor, keyboard, mouse etc., are examples of computer hardware.

Software Software refers to the set of commands or instructions given to the computer.
