Spring 2013

INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Bernard Fulgham Office Phone: 924-1029 E-mail: bif3c@virginia.edu

Office: Thornton B210 Office hours: Tues & Thurs 10:00 am-12:00 pm Wed 3:00-5:00 pm

Graduate TAs: Xin Ye (xy3vp) & Huiying Zoe Zhang (hz4ay) APMA Workshop: Thornton A-Wing 2nd Floor, Student Study Room The APMA Workshop schedule can be found on the UVaCollab site APMA 3100 / All under Resources. TEXT: Probability and Stochastic Processes, 2nd edition by R. D. Yates and D. J. Goodman. OVERVIEW: APMA 2120 [Multivariate Calculus] or equivalent. A working knowledge of double integrals, infinite series, and functions of one and several variables is required. On UVaCollab, under Resources, you will find a review sheet: Calculus and Probability, a Review. COURSE DESCRIPTION: A calculus-based introduction to probability theory and its applications in engineering and applied science. Topics covered include counting techniques, conditional probability, independence, discrete and continuous random variables, expected value and variance, joint distributions, covariance, correlation, central limit theorem, and an introduction to statistical inference. OBJECTIVES: We hope to provide the student with 1. A working knowledge of concepts and tools of probability theory. 2. Experience with a variety of typical applications of probability. 3. A foundation for further studies in probability, statistics, and stochastic processes. 4. An enhancement of overall mathematical skills. CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE: Please (1) arrive on time, (2) turn off your cell phone, and (3) do not talk during class. You may only use your computer to view the lecture notes. If you are caught surfing the web, texting, etc. during class, you will be asked to leave the classroom immediately. CLICKERS: There will be several i>clicker questions during each lecture, beginning on the very first day of class. Your responses will comprise 5% of your final grade. Please purchase an i>clicker before class begins, and don't forget to register it on the UVaCollab site. TEXTBOOK PROBLEMS: Several problems will be assigned every week. Assignments are listed on the third page of this syllabus. The problems from the textbook will not be graded, but many of the exercises will be very similar to WebWork and quiz problems. For this reason, it is strongly recommended that you finish the textbook problems prior to the corresponding WebWork assignment and quiz. WEBWORK: Each week, there will be an online assignment administered via WebWork. All WebWork assignments are open-book and open-note, but you should work them with as little help as possible. Math isnt a spectator sport; you wont learn simply by watching others or trying to mimic example problems. Youll learn the most when you carefully work through the solution process from start to finish without any type of assistance. 1

QUIZZES: Roughly once every two weeks there will be a Friday quiz. Missed quizzes cannot be made up. TESTS: There will be two evening midterms given 7:00-8:30 pm (location to be announced). The dates and chapters to be covered for each test are given below: 1st Exam: Wednesday, February 20th Chapters 1 & 2, Sections 3.1-3.5 nd rd 2 Exam: Wednesday, April 3 Sections 3.7 & 3.8, Chapters 4-6 FINAL EXAM: The final exam can't be taken early; please make your travel plans accordingly. Headphones are not allowed during either mid-term or the final exam. The schedule for the final exam is given below: Friday, May 3rd, 7:00-10:00 pm. LEARNING NEEDS: If you have learning needs that have been evaluated by the Learning Needs and Evaluation Center (LNEC), I will be happy to accommodate them and help you accordingly. You must, however, provide documentation from LNEC within the first two weeks of the semester or whenever you are evaluated, preferably at least one week before an exam. The contact information for LNEC is lnec@virginia.edu (email) and 243-5180 (phone). CALCULATORS: You may use a non-graphing calculator for basic computations, including basic probability calculations. If you want to use a scientific calculator, you must use one of the following calculators: Casio FX260SLR, Sharp EL-501X, or Texas Instruments TI-30Xa (available at the UVa Bookstore). EMAIL: Email will be used frequently to contact the class with announcements or other information. Please check your university email regularly. HONOR CODE: The Honor Code will be strictly observed in this course. Please remember to pledge each mid-term and the final exam. COURSE GRADES: The following table lists the weight of each form of assessment used in this class. Curving grades, if necessary, will only be done after the final exam. Clicker Questions: 5% 13 WeBWorK: 7% 5 Quizzes: 8% 2 Midterms: 50% (25% each) Final Exam: 30% IMPORTANT DATES: Please be aware of the following dates for engineering students.
