Open Strings

Root Shapes
The five root shapes are the patterns that you can use to navigate from one note to other notes with the same note name.

Note Names
The natural notes can be found moving up two frets at a time, except between E and F, and between B and C where you only move one fret. The accidentals can be found by moving up one fret for a sharp or down one fret for a flat.

Finding Notes Counting Up


You can find notes by counting up from known notes such as the open string using your knowledge of the natural notes pattern.

You can also use the root patterns to find notes from other known notes.

Finding Notes Learning a New Anchor Point on the 7th Fret


You can improve the speed that you find notes by learning new anchor points to start counting from or to use as a th baseline for the root patterns. A good anchor is to learn the notes on the 7 fret:
