Office of Postsecondary Readiness

Spring 2013 ESI Events

As we start the second semester, the ESI team wants to draw your attention to the sequence of activities and events that will take place throughout the spring. The work of ESI centers around the strategies that each schools Design Team proposes to increase college and career readiness among Black and Latino young men. Part of our goal this spring is to widen the schools stakeholders who are engaged in ESI. Please mark these important dates on your calendar so that all members of the Design Team can plan accordingly. More detailed information regarding each event will be forthcoming.

Activity: Design Team Meetings and Year 2 Planning Target Audience: School Design Team Goals: Throughout the spring, members of the ESI Team will be visiting your school with the offer of sitting in on a Design Team meeting especially as you plan for Year 2. We see the design team as key stakeholders (Principal, Assistant Principal, Dean, Lead Teacher(s), Guidance Counselor and Students), who guide the theory of change embedded in the schools work plan. The Design Team leads the schools professional learning and integration of the professional learning frameworks, such as the College and Career Readiness benchmarks and Culturally Relevant Education. Please review the Guide for School Design Teams that lays out objectives and expectations for this team. Schedule: February through May

Event: FAFSA Pilot Target Audience: College/Guidance Counselor Goals: As you know, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be eligible for any financial aid at a postsecondary institution. However, its estimated that close to 2 million students fail to complete and submit their FAFSA each year. Guidance and College Counselors in ESI schools are invited to participate in the FAFSA Completion Pilot. The purpose of the pilot is to provide FAFSA completion data to the participating counselors so that the school can focus its resources on students who have not completed the FAFSA. We are convening a meeting for college/guidance counselors from all ESI schools to introduce the FAFSA pilot and begin to engage these crucial stakeholders in ESI. Please release your college counselor/point person for this meeting. Schedule: Thursday, February 21st from 9:00 AM 11:00 AM Location: St. Francis College Callahan Center (180 Remsen Street Brooklyn, NY 11201) Activity: Register Here

Event: Spring Math PD with Metamorphosis Target Audience: 9th & 10th Grade Math Teachers and Math Coach Goals: The Spring Metamorphosis PD for Math teachers in ESI schools kicks off Monday, Feb 25 and will include a hybrid of Algebra, Geometry, lesson study, and a modified in-workshop Teaching Learning Community (TLC) experience. The sessions will cover: Time for teachers to explore investigations in algebra/geometry that they can use in their classes Pedagogy that immerses teachers in the kind of learning environments they are being asked to create in their classrooms Conversation that engages teachers in robust academic discourse through the use of higher-order questioning techniques and accountable talk Registration information will follow. Schedule: Monday, Feb. 25th, Thursday, Feb. 28th, Monday, March 4th and Thursday, March 7th All sessions will be 4:30 PM 6:30 PM Location: 333 7th Ave New York, NY 10001, 7th Floor Large Conference Room Activity: Register Here Activity: Reframing Success Project With Who: Design Team Member co-ordinates Goals: We are pleased to announce that young men from the 40 ESI schools will participate in the nations largest study that reframes the narrative around Black and Latino male success in college. Patterned after the national study led by Dr. Shaun Harper at the Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education, this project will focus on our young men who have graduated or are about to graduate from each of our ESI schools. Each school will be asked to identify young men to participate in interviews with Dr. Harper and his team. Please identify a point person.

Event: Youth Summit Target Audience: 9th Grade Black and Latino Males Goals: On Friday, June 7th, more than 450 ninth grade young men from across all 40 ESI schools will come together at the ESI Youth Summit and share success and barriers around college and career planning. The Youth Summit, intended as an annual event, will be an opportunity for educators to learn from our young men and to foster collaboration around increasing college and career planning at every level. The first half of the day will feature student-led workshops on topics relating to: gender identity, economic power, relation to law enforcement, community service, culture and college readiness. Young mens groups from across the ESI schools will be invited to propose and lead workshops. Stay tuned for details. Date: Friday, June 7th from 9:00 AM 3:30 PM Location: TBA

Event: June Symposium Target Audience: All Members of the Design Team Goals: The June Symposium represents the culmination of the year. ESI community will share insights gleaned from Year 1 and plan together for Year 2. We are fortunate to have Geoffrey Canada as our keynote speaker. We look forward to having your design team join us for an afternoon of learning and sharing. Date: June 20th from 4:30 PM 7:00 PM Location: TBA

Activity: Data Snapshots/Toolkits Goals: To continue our support to the Design Team, we are releasing the next ESI barometer within the next two weeks. This barometer will be focused on the Freshmen Cohort. It will provide you with a baseline + measure the progress of Black and Latino males in the ninth grade cohort. A data toolkit will be provided for the team to review the progress of ninth graders and the programmatic implications for Year 1. Date: Week of March 4th and Week of June 3rd

Event: Leadership Meetings Target Audience: Principals and/or Assistant Principal Goals: From the beginning of our ESI journey, we have been clear that this is a collective endeavor that builds on the successes of each school. In order to build community and share lesson learned thus far, we are holding leadership meetings as a chance for the Principal or the Assistant Principal to provide feedback on the initiative, and an opportunity to connect and share with each other. As a convenience we will hold a meeting in each borough at a centrally located school. Stay tuned for details Dates: February 26th in Manhattan February 27th in Brooklyn March 5th in Bronx March 6th in Queens All meetings will take place from 4:30 PM - 6:30 PM Locations: TBA
