FINAL NOTICE The Community of Philosophical Thinkers

in conjunction with the

Philosophy Department at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte

is pleased to announce our

5th Annual Student Philosophy Conference

taking place on

March 23rd, 2013

Papers are now being accepted for undergraduate as well as graduate presentations on any topic in philosophy. Keynote speaker Dr. Robin James, presenting a new lecture: Just Ludacris Enough: sophrosyne, neoliberalism, & EDM-pop:
Philosophers have noted similarities between ancient Greek and neoliberal political theories. For example, Rancire argues that the neoliberal state is the perfect realization of the empty virtue Plato called sophrusune (Disagreement, 106). Because both ancient Greeks and neoliberals organize society harmonically, this comparison is, to a certain extent, a valid one. However, they each understand harmony differently: for the ancient Greeks, harmony is measured geometrically; for the neoliberals, harmony is measured acoustically. In this presentation, I flesh out the differences between ancient Greek and neoliberal concepts of harmony, and use a reading of Ludacriss 2012 single/video Rest of My Life to translate between neoliberal concepts of harmony and neoliberal political practices and ideals.
