NURSING RESPONSIBILITIES: Check for the specific diet of the patient in the doctors order. Know the indications of the type of diet. Identify the patient. Assess patients knowledge regarding proper nutrition. Assess patients eating habits and preferences to identify possible threats to health. Make sure that patient has (+) flatus, (+) bowel sounds and gag reflex has resumed before giving any foods or drinks orally. Explain the purposes/ importance of diet therapy to the patient in his health progress. Instruct him to eat only the specific food based from his specific diet. Stress the right foods to eat to promote and maintain health and speed up recovery. Monitor the diet of the patient. Ensure the tolerance of the diet, noting any allergies if any. Instruct the client to report any GI discomforts as a response to the type of diet. Notify the physician if intolerance occurs.
