VSA GROUP OF INSTITUTIONS DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL NGINEERING STRENGTH OF MATERIALS - INTERNAL TEST Date: 23.01.2012 Max.

marks:50 PART-A (5x2=10) 1. State Hookes Law. 2. Distinguish between rigid and deformable bodies. 3. What is Strain Energy? 4. What is Resilience & Proof Resilience? 5. State the principle of superposition. PART B Answer any TWO Questions. (2x16=32) 6. A reinforced concrete column 500mm x 500mm in section is reinforced with 4 steel bars of 20mm diameter, one in each Corner. The column is carrying a load of 750KN. Determine the stresses in concrete and steel bars. Take Es=210GPa & Ec=14GPa. Also, calculate load carried by steel & concrete. 7. A mild steel rod of 20mm diameter and 300mm long is enclosed centrally inside a hollow copper tube of external dia. 30mm and internal dia. 25mm. The ends of the tube and the rods are brazed together and the composite bar is subjected to an axial pull of 40KN. If E for steel and copper is 200GN/m2 and 100GN/m2 respectively, find the stresses developed in the rod and the tube. Also, find the extension of the rod. 8. A vertical compound member fixed rigidly at its upper end, consists of a steel rod 2.5m long and 20mm in dia. Placed within an equally long brass tube 21mm in internal dia. and 30mm external dia. The rod and the tube are fixed together at the ends. The compound member is then suddenly loaded in tension by a weight of 10KN falling through a height of 3mm on to a flange fixed to its lower end. Calculate the max. Stresses in steel and brass. Assume Es=2x105n/mm2 and Eb = 1x105 N/mm2 PART C (1x8=8) 9. An aluminium cylinder of dia.60mm located inside a steel cylinder of internal dia.60mm and wall thickness 15mm. The assembly is subjected to a compressive force of 200KN. What are the forces carried and stress developed in steel and aluminium? Take modulas of elasticity for steel as 200GPa and aluminium as 50GPa. (1pa = 1N/m2)
