Este mes vuelve a la ciudad la Pasarela Cibeles, ahora Madrid Fashion Week, en su 43 edicin. 31 diseadores de todo el pas presentan sus propuestas para la primavera-verano 2007, estrenando escenario. Cibeles se traslada al otoal Paseo de Coches del Parque del Retiro. El objetivo? Que la moda salga a la ciudad para seducir a los ciudadanos, que sea ms accesible, que est, de verdad, al alcance de todos. Esta ciudad marca estilo! La primera pasarela de moda de Espaa, reconocida como una de las ms importantes del mundo, puede medirse con las de Pars o Miln. Su nalidad es abrir mercados en todos los continentes. Y este salto ha sido posible gracias a la creatividad de los diseadores y a la solidez de las colecciones presentadas ao tras ao. La moda es glamour, imagen, sueos arte sin duda, pero tambin negocio, porque detrs de los modelos que admiramos hay un entramado que mueve en Espaa un volumen de 13.000 millones de euros, de los que un 40% proceden de las exportaciones. Y es que la moda espaola no son slo los diseadores de renombre, sino tambin las grandes marcas como Zara, Mango o Corte el.

The 43rd Cibeles Show, now renamed Madrid Fashion Week, returns to the city this month. 31 designers from all over the country will be presenting their ideas for spring-summer 2007, and using a new venue. Cibeles is moving to the Paseo de Coches in the Retiro Park. What is the reason for the move? The idea is for fashion to come out to the city to charm its citi-
zens, to be more accessible, and to be truly within reach of all. This city sets the style! Spains foremost fashion show, acknowledged as one of the most important in the world, bears comparison with those in Paris and Milan. Its objective is to open up markets all over the world. This leap has been possible thanks to the creativity of the designers and the reliability of the
collections presented every year. Fashion is glamour, image and dreams it is undoubtedly art, but it is also a business, because behind the models we admire there is a network which in Spain has a turnover of 13 billion Euros, of which 40% comes from exports. Spanish fashion is not only renowned designers, but also leading brands like Zara, Mango and Corte el.

QU ES LA NOCHE EN BLANCO DE MADRID ? Fin de verano. Luna nueva. La luna se esconde y el arte y la creacin iluminan la ciudad. Durante una noche completa, de sol a sol, la ciudad ser escenario de una oferta cultural extraordinaria y gratuita. CUNDO Y DNDE SE CELEBRAR LA NOCHE EN BLANCO ? Desde las 21:30 horas del sbado 23 de septiembre a las 07:00 del domingo da 24 en ms de 200 espacios de la ciudad, con especial concentracin en el centro y el eje Castellana-Recoletos-Prado.
Una parte de la programacin podr verse, sobre todo durante las primeras horas de la velada, en espacios pblicos: plazas, paseos y jardines; otra parte se desarrollar en instituciones culturales, en espacios histricos inslitos y en hitos de la arquitectura contempornea. Y a ellos se sumarn galeras de arte, libreras, locales de msica en vivo y salas de teatro privadas. Conde Duque, Matadero Madrid, el Palacio de Comunicaciones y el Crculo de Bellas Artes sern espacios abiertos al pblico durante toda la noche.
QU OFRECER LA NOCHE EN BLANCO? Una programacin de conciertos, instalaciones, proyecciones, performances, visitas guiadas y exposiciones ligadas a las diferentes formas de creacin: artes plsticas, msica, literatura, teatro de texto o de calle, circo, arquitectura, diseo, cine y moda.

WHEN AND WHERE WILL THE WHITE NIGHT BE HELD? It will run from 9.30 p.m. on Saturday, 23 September until 7 a.m. on Sunday, 24 SepSep tember at over 200 different venues in the city, especially concentrating in Madrid city centre and, particularly, in the CastellanaRecoletos-Prado area.
Conde Duque, Matadero Madrid, Palacio de Comunicaciones and the Crculo de Bellas Artes are some of the other venues that will remain open to the public all night.
WHAT IS THE NOCHE EN BLANCO (WHITE NIGHT) OF MADRID? The end of the summer. New moon. The moon hides and art and creation light up the city. For one full night, sundown to sunrise, the city will become the great backdrop for an exceptional, free cultural offer.
One part of the extraordinary offer for the night will be offered, especially during the initial hours of the evening, in public venues: squares, avenues and gardens. Another part of the programme will be held in institutions that are linked to the cultural life of the city, historical venues or buildings with the most modern architecture, to which can be added a large number of modern art galleries, bookshops, live music venues and private theatres.
WHAT WILL THE WHITE NIGHT OFFER? A programme of concerts, installations, projections, performances, guided tours and exhibitions, linked to different forms of creation, from plastic arts to music, literature and poetry, text theatre and street theatre, circus, architecture, design, cinema and fashion.

La Noche en Blanco invita a realizar un paseo nocturno por la creacin y la expresin artsticas, utilizando en todo caso el transporte pblico que pondr a disposicin de los ciudadanos el Ayuntamiento de Madrid. CMO INFORMARSE SOBRE LA NOCHE EN BLANCO ? A travs de la web esmadrid.com/ lanocheenblanco y del telfono 010; con el programa de mano y con un plano-gua; en los puntos de informacin turstica. QU ES NOCHES BLANCAS EUROPA? La Noche en Blanco de Madrid se inscribe en Noches Blancas Europa, un programa europeo en el que tambin participan Riga, Roma, Bruselas y Pars, y tiene una identidad gr ca comn, creada por el diseador Jos Cruz Novillo por encargo del rea de Las Artes del Ayuntamiento de Madrid. Noches Blancas Europa orquesta su actividad a travs del intercambio artstico entre las cinco ciudades. As, la artista lituana Katrina Neiburga exhibir la videoinstalacin The Street en el Patio de Conde Duque. A su vez, el artista madrileo Grojo ha creado La Cabeza, que podr verse tambin en Conde Duque la noche del 23 de septiembre y posteriormente en Bruselas.

The essence of the White Night is to take a night-time stroll through creation and artistic expression, when necessary using the public transport that Madrid City Council will make available to citizens on that night. On the website www.esmadrid.com/ lanocheenblanco/; with the help of telephone number 010; with the programme and the guide map; as well as with the help provided by existing tourist information points. WHAT IS WHITE NIGHTS EUROPE? The White Night of Madrid is part of a European initiative including Riga, Rome, Brussels and Paris. This programme has a common graphic identity, created by Madrid designer Jos Cruz Novillo and commissioned by the Arts Department of Madrid City Council. White Nights Europe has a common artistic programme created by exchanging artists from the ve cities. In the context of this programme, Lithuanian artist Katrina Neiburga has created a video installation called The Street, which will be shown in the Patio de Conde Duque. At the same time, Madrid artist Grojo has created La Cabeza, which will also be shown in the Conde Duque on the night of 23 September in Madrid and subsequently in Brussels.

Los dos grandes museos nacionales rinden homenaje al pintor ms influyente del siglo XX cuando se conmemora el 125 aniversario de su nacimiento. Mientras que en el Prado Picasso se enfrenta a sus maestros con una retrospectiva de su obra, en el Reina Sofa la muestra adquiere un carcter monogrfico en torno al Guernica, que hace 25 aos que lleg a Espaa y que se expone junto a Los fusilamientos del 3 de mayo, de Francisco de Goya, como imagen irrepetible de los desastres de la guerra. Gordon Matta-Clark es uno de los artistas conceptuales ms importantes de la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Su trabajo es conocido por los cuttings, intervenciones en construcciones abandonadas, que lma y fotografa como espacios reinventados. Sus pelculas experimentales, que tambin pueden verse en la muestra, causaron sensacin en el Nueva York de los aos setenta. Gordon Matta-Clark is one of the most important conceptual artists of the second half of the twentieth century. His work is well-known for his building cuts, his work on abandoned buildings, which he lms and photographed as reinvented spaces. His experimental lms, which can also be seen in the exhibition, created a sensation in 1970s New York.

Me gusta mucho mi trabajo y ser tan popular, pero al venir aqu preferira ser completamente desconocido y disfrutar de toda la ciudad a mis anchas. WHICH MADRID DISH WOULD YOU SING THE PRAISES OF? Al Retiro iba con mi padre y mi hermana a remar. Tengo algo clavado dentro, y es estar all tomando una horchata fra. QU LE PONE MS NERVIOSO, VER JUGAR AL REAL MADRID O SALIR A ESCENA? Desde luego, salir a escena. Como ancdota os dir que siempre que he ido al Bernabu, el Madrid ha ganado. Nunca lo he visto perder, como mucho ha empatado. WHAT WAS THE MADRID THAT YOUR PARENTS TOLD YOU ABOUT LIKE? Madrid was a sad place then, and it was a grim time, in the middle of the war. I remember as a child how happy I was to see them perform in the theatre. I used to go to the boating lake in the Retiro with my father and sister. Something I still remember very clearly is sitting there having a cold tiger nut milk. WHAT MAKES YOU MORE NERVOUS - WATCHING REAL MADRID PLAY OR TAKING THE STAGE? Taking the stage, of course. Although I should mention that every time Ive been to the Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid have won. Ive never seen them lose - theyve always drawn, at least.

Cuentan que la tapa debe su nombre a la rebanada de pan que se pona encima del vaso de vino para taparlo. Con el tiempo se acompa de una loncha de jamn, queso o chorizo y as naci la caracterstica tapa madrilea que suele acompaar al verm, al chato de vino o a la caa. Hoy en Madrid ir de tapas es un ritual muy practicado. Una excusa para ir de taberna en taberna, entre risas y charlas con los amigos, bebiendo algo y picoteando de todo un poco: que si unas aceitunitas, unas patatas bravas, unos tigres (mejillones), comiendo sin comer y siempre acompaando a la bebida.
No confundamos tapas y raciones, porque as como las segundas son ms generosas y a cuenta del que las pide, las tapas son un detalle que corre a cuenta de la casa. Por ltimo, hay que saber que tapear implica hacer la ronda: recorrer, de bar en bar, una o varias zonas, tradicionalmente en el centro de la ciudad. Esta prctica permite al cliente avispado descubrir lugares donde, gracias a la generosidad de sus tapas, con un par de caas se come. Pero estos son secretos que nunca se cuentan y que uno mismo ha de descubrir. A continuacin sugerimos algunos de los ms representativos templos del tapeo.
Tapas
The origin of the word can be traced back to the slice of bread that was placed on top of wine glasses to cover them. Over time, it was accompanied by a slice of ham, cheese or chorizo, giving birth to the typical Madrid tapa that is usually served with vermouth, glasses of wine or small glasses of beer. In Madrid today, going for tapas is a very common ritual. It is an excuse to move from bar to bar, having a laugh and chat with friends, enjoying a drink and a nibble of a little of everything: maybe some olives, some roast potatoes, some mussels, eating but without getting full and always accompanied by a drink. Tapas should not be confused with raciones (portions), because while the latter are larger and paid for by the person ordering them, tapas are an extra which are on the house. Finally, remember that going for tapas involves moving around: going from bar to bar, in one or more districts, traditionally in the city centre. This enables astute clients to find places where it is possible to eat for the price of a couple of beers thanks to the generosity of their tapas. However, these are carefully guarded secrets that must be discovered for oneself. We suggest some of the more outstanding tapas venues below.

Advierte un dicho madrileo: El que no pasa por la calle de la pasa no se casa. La calle de la pasa, situada en el barrio de los Austrias, hace ya bastante tiempo alberg en el nmero 3 la Vicara eclesistica de la ciudad. Cuentan que el origen de su nombre es similar al del cercano pasadizo del Panecillo, ya que mientras que por una ventana del Palacio Episcopal se reparta un panecillo a los mendigos, por la puerta se daba como limosna un puado de pasas. Ambas costumbres se suprimieron y, aunque ya no es posible ir a por pasas, merece la pena venir hasta aqu para revivir la historia. Tambin se pueden degustar los sabrosos pinchos vascos de la Taberna Lizarrn. El Caf Bistrot an recuerda en sus toldos rojos la frase que ha inmortalizado esta calle en la cultura popular madrilea. A Madrid proverb says: He who does not walk down Calle de la Pasa will not marry. Some years ago, the citys vicarage was located at number 3, Calle de la Pasa, in the Austrias district. They say that the name (which means Raisin Street) originates from a similar source to the nearby Pasadizo del Panecillo (Bread Roll Alley), as while bread rolls were given to tramps through the window of the Episcopal Palace, a handful of raisins were given as alms through the door. Both customs died out, and although it is no longer possible to look for raisins, it is worth coming here to relive the story. You can also try the tasty Basque tapas at the Taberna Lizarrn. The proverb immortalising the street in Madrids popular culture can be seen on the red awnings of the Caf Bistrot.

No sabemos si Lorca, Dal y Buuel habran sido los mismos si no se hubieran conocido en Madrid. La Residencia de Estudiantes, donde coincidieron los tres, los marc para siempre y propici la interaccin de su genio. Las casualidades no existen. La Residencia naci impulsada por el espritu innovador de la Institucin Libre de Enseanza: difusin de la modernidad, pensamiento libre, y fusin de ciencia y arte. De ah que fuese un centro de atraccin de artistas e intelectuales de la poca. Severo Ochoa, Falla, Alberti, Paul Valery, Gropius, Stranvinski, Einstein o Le Corbusier, entre otros, pasearon por este tranquilo rincn del centro de Madrid. La Colina de los Chopos fue el nombre que le dio el escritor Juan Ramn Jimnez, ya que suya fue la idea de plantar los rboles que hoy circundan la Residencia. Tras un largo periodo de inactividad, la Residencia de Estudiantes ha renacido como foco de cultura y debate recuperando su espritu anterior. Casi 3.000 artistas, investigadores y otros expertos de diversos campos residen en sus instalaciones a lo largo del ao. Al mismo tiempo ofrece cursos, conferencias y algunas de las exposiciones ms importantes que se pueden ver en la capital. En la actualidad vuelve a ser uno de los centros ms originales del panorama cultural espaol.
Who is to say whether Lorca, Dal and Buuel would have turned out the same had they not met in Madrid? The Residencia de Estudiantes, where the three of them met, made a lasting impression on them and led to the interaction of their talents. There is no such thing as a coincidence. The Residencia was established as a result of the innovative spirit of the Institucin Libre de Enseanza, or Free Education Institution, which was committed to the dissemination of modernity, free thought, and the fusion of science and art. As a result, it was a centre where artists and intellectuals of the time met. Severo Ochoa, Falla, Alberti, Paul Valery, Gropius, Stravinsky, Einstein and Le Corbusier were among those who passed through this peaceful corner of the centre of Madrid. It was christened La Colina de los Chopos (Poplar Hill) by the writer Juan Ramn Jimnez, whose idea it was to plant the trees which today surround the Residencia. After a long dormant period, the Residencia de Estudiantes has re-established itself as a centre for culture and debate, and revived its spirit of years gone by. Almost 3,000 artists, researchers and other experts from various elds live there during the year. It also stages courses, conferences and some of the capital citys most important exhibitions. Today, it is once again one of the most original centres in Spains cultural landscape.
