Anu Sree To reduce dependence on the monsoons adequate irrigation infrastructure needs to be built. Low productivity states need to be brought at par with the rest of the country. It is important to ensure that productivity is enhanced without compromising on the environment. Both storage and distribution aspects of food management should be brought under scrutiny. Adequate investment in storage facilities must be made so as to prevent post-harvest losses. Like

Anu Sree Curiosity, NASA's Mars Science Laboratory, is expected to complete its 567million-kilometre journey to the Red Planet in August 2012. A complicated and perilous descent will follow to set the 900-kg, six-wheeled rover on the floor of the large Gale crater. The rover, equipped with a suite of 10 scientific instruments, is the most sophisticated explorer sent to another planet. The experiments it will carry out are not, the U.S. space agency says, intended to detect active processes that would signify present-day biological metabolism. Nor would it try to image micro-organisms or their fossil remains. Rather, its task will be to find out if conditions favourable for life existed on the planet. It will seek additional evidence of water and how the Martian climate might have changed over time. A layered mountain at the centre of the crater, with minerals that form in water, might provide a wealth of information about such changes. The rover will also look for organic molecules, a further sign that life could have arisen there. It will examine whether the traces of methane found in the atmosphere could have a biological origin. In addition, it will try to establish the various energy sources that life forms could utilise. Down the road, what scientists would really like is a mission to bring back Martian soil and rock samples for detailed analysis in the lab. But such a mission will be costly and stands little chance of being funded any time soon. So when it comes to understanding possibilities for life on Mars, it's over to Curiosity and the science it can do. Like

Anu Sree Could life have arisen on Mars? On Saturday, a car-sized rover named Curiosity rocketed off to Mars to seek further clues to that tantalising question is there life out there? At the turn of the last century, there were fanciful ideas of a sophisticated Martian civilisation capable of digging vast systems of canals. But the Mariner spacecraft that flew past and orbited Earth's neighbour as well as the two Viking landers that touched down on its surface in 1976 sent back images of a cold, bleak, and barren land, with a thin atmosphere that was mostly carbon dioxide and no signs of life. However, missions to the planet since the 1990s have raised exciting possibilities that scientists are eager to explore. There are indications that Mars was once a wetter, perhaps even warmer, place. Water may have flowed on its surface and could still exist below the surface. Life could have arisen there and may be clinging on in some niches, such as underground springs warmed by volcanoes.

Such life could take the form of hardy microbes. Like

Anu Sree Large urban agglomerations pose a different problem. The number of people residing within the city core has come down because of expensive land prices, but the peripheries have expanded with low densities, consuming more land and forcing long commutes. Mumbai city, for instance, had a negative population growth rate of 5.75 per cent in the last decade, but Thane, its suburb, which is about 40 km away, recorded 36 per cent growth. Such a sprawl means a huge loss of agricultural land, and it pushes the perimeter of urban consumption far beyond its immediate region. If this pattern continues unchecked, the land required to support each person, currently estimated to be 2.7 hectares, will increase and result in an ecological overshoot.' Like

Anu Sree More than half of the seven-billion world population is huddled on three per cent of the earth's land area. But as the recently published U.N. Population Fund (UNFPA) report cautions, this should not be taken to mean that the world can mindlessly absorb any number of people for years to come. Nor does it imply that its cities can expand without rethinking their current course. What emerges from the population figures is that there is an urgent need to plan human settlements proactively, using the available land wisely and ensuring that the future population is provided with better places to live in. In the next three decades, much of the population growth will occur in urban areas, and about five billion people will live in cities. Africa and Asia are set to double their urban population in the same period. Like

Smaller towns that have neither the resources nor the planning infrastructure are absorbing significant numbers of people. For instance, in India, of the 2,774 new urban centres that have emerged in the last decade, 2,532 are census towns or places without a statutory urban local body such as a municipality. This disconnect is an urgent reminder to policymakers that they must strengthen the capacities of smaller towns and enable them to handle the population surge better. Anu Sree It takes more than six days to travel along the whole Trans-Siberian, so it is recommended to make stopovers along the way like this your trip will be much more interesting also. After crossing Siberia (soon after Irkutsk) the Trans-Siberian route divides into three different routes: The Trans-Siberian Route: Moscow - Vladivostok the original Trans-Siberian railway, which goes all along Siberia and through the Far East (to the Pacific Ocean). The Trans-Mongolian Route: Moscow - Ulan-Bataar - Beijing. You will see Siberian plains and forests, Mongolian steppe and even a part of Gobi desert along this route that goes through Mongolia to China. The Trans-Manchurian Route: Moscow - Beijing a direct way from Russia to China that goes around the Eastern border of Mongolia, not crossing it. It can be interesting for those, who are not interested in going to Mongolia, or who can't get tickets for other trains

Anu Sree The Trans-Siberian is an immense route: along more than 9000 kilometers of its length you will see different landscapes, meet many different people and cultures (especially, if you hop off the train at few points), experience magnificient Siberian Baikal lake, and just enjoy the trip in the train. The original Russian name for this railway is "The Great Siberian Way", the name "Trans-Siberian" was given to this route by the West, and became very widespread. This railway is the backbone of Russia. It is the only overland route going through the whole country. This unique status makes the railway still quite important for the economy and safety of the country, as it was supposed to be more than 100 years ago, when it was built. Like

In January of 1957, she was sold to India, and construction was completed at Harland and Wolff with an extensively modernized design, including an angled deck with steam catapults, a modified island, and many other improvements. The Indian high commissioner to the United Kingdom, Vijayalakshmi Pandit, commissioned her as INS Vikranton 4 March 1961 while she was still at Belfast, Northern Ireland. Hemant Kumar Saini and 2 others like this. Anu Sree In 1965, Pakistan claimed that they had sunk her. At the time, however, Vikrant was under refit in the drydock. Despite a crack in a boiler, she saw real combat against Pakistan in the 1971 Liberation War of Bangladesh. She was considered important enough by the Pakistanis that they sent the submarine Ghazi all the way to the Bay of Bengal to mine the Visakhapatnam harbor in an attempt to sink the aircraft carrier when she put to sea. During Vikrant earned two Mahavir Chakras and 12 Vir Chakras. Vikrant was given an extensive refit, including new engines and modernization between 1979 and January 3,1982. Between December 1982 and February 1983 she was refitted again to permit her to operate Sea Harriers. After the retirement of the Alize propeller-driven anti-submarine planes from carrier service in 1989, she received a ski jump for more efficient use of her Harriers. Vikrant was India's only carrier for over 20 years, but by the early 1990s she was effectively out of service because of her poor condition. Even following major overhauls she rarely put to sea. She was formally decommissionedJanuary 31, 1997 and will be preserved as a museum at Mumbai. Anu Sree The area south of the Antarctic Circle is known as the Antarctic, and the zone immediately to the north is called theSouthern Temperate Zone. The equivalent line of latitude in the northern hemisphere is the Arctic Circle. Every place south of the Antarctic Circle experiences a period of twenty-four hours' continuous daylight at least once per year, and a period of twenty-four hours' continuous night time at least once per year. That is to say, there is at least one whole day during which the sun does not set, and at least one whole day during which the sun does not rise. On the Antarctic Circle these events occur, in principle, exactly once per year, at the December and June solstices respectively. Like

Hemant Kumar Saini and 2 others like this. Anu Sree This happens because the Earth's axis is tilted, by approximately 23.5 degrees, relative to ecliptic (the plane of the

Earth's orbit around the sun). At the southern winter solstice, the southern hemisphere is tilted away from the Sun to its maximum extent, and the region of permanent darkness reaches its northern limit; at the southern summer solstice, the southern hemisphere is tilted towards the Sun to its maximum extent, and the region of permanent sunlight reaches its northern limit. In practice several other factors affect the appearance of continuous day or night, the most important being atmospheric refraction, the altitude of the observer above sea level, mirages, and the fact that the sun is a sphere rather than a point. Mirages on the Antarctic continent tend to be even more spectacular than in Arctic regions, creating, for example, a series of apparent sunsets and sunrises while in reality the sun remains under the horizon. Due to gradual changes in the tilt of the Earth's axis, the Antarctic Circle is slowly moving. See circles of latitude. November 15 at 4:38pm 3713435 1 Like

Anu Sree More than stock market indices, headline inflation figures or GDP data, Sachin Tendulkars on field performances have perhaps been a better barometer of our national mood for over two decades. Not surprisingly, the analysis of Tendulkars 100th in the Indian media since the beginning of the Lords Test in July has been endless. If a Martian a happened to scan the archives of Indian newspapers, it would appear to him that Tendulkars milestone has a greater importance on our existence than the economic crises in the Eurozone, or the policy paralysis that has gripped Indias economy. As India breathlessly awaits his 100th, a veritable Mount Everest of cricket records, alongside Sir Don Bradmans Test average of 99.94, which is unlikely to be ever scaled, all other cricketing matters have taken a backseat. Anu Sree Reactors using heavy water or graphite as the moderator can operate using natural uranium. A Light water reactor (LWR) uses water in the form that occurs in nature, and require fuel that is enriched in fissile isotopes, typically uranium enriched to 35% in the less common isotope U-235, the only fissile isotope that is found in significant quantity in nature. One alternative to this low-enriched uranium (LEU) fuel are Mixed Oxide (MOX) fuels produced by blending plutonium with natural or depleted uranium, and these fuels provide an avenue to utilize surplus weaponsgrade plutonium. Another type of MOX fuel involves mixing LEU with thorium, which generates the fissile isotope U-233. Both plutonium and U-233 are produced from the absorption of neutrons by irradiating fertile materials in a reactor, in particular the common uranium isotope U-238 and thorium, respectively, and can be separated from spent uranium and thorium fuels in reprocessing plants. Anu Sree The Commonwealth's current highest-priority aims are on the promotion of democracy and development, as outlined in the 2003 Aso Rock Declaration,[19] which built on those in Singapore and Harare and clarified their terms of reference, stating, "We are committed to democracy, good governance, human rights, gender equality, and a more equitable sharing of the benefits of globalisation."[20] The Commonwealth website lists its areas of work as: Democracy, Economics, Education, Gender, Governance, Human Rights, Law, Small States, Sport, Sustainability, and Youth.[21] The Commonwealth has long been distinctive as an international forum where developed economies (such as the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Singapore, and New Zealand) and many of the world's poorer countries seek to reach agreement by consensus. This aim has sometimes been difficult to achieve, as when disagreements over Rhodesia in the late 1960s and 1970s and over apartheid in South Africa in the 1980s led to a cooling of relations between the United Kingdom and African members. Anu Sree Common wealth Nations After World War II ended, the British Empire was gradually dismantled to just 14 British overseas territories, still held by the United Kingdom today. In April 1949, following the London Declaration, the word "British" was dropped from the title of the Commonwealth to reflect its changing nature.[13] Burma (also known as Myanmar, 1948), and Aden (1967) are the only states that were British colonies at the time of the war not to have joined the Commonwealth upon post-war independence. Among the former British protectorates and mandates, those that never became members of the Commonwealth are Egypt (independent in 1922), Iraq (1932), Transjordan (1946), British Palestine (part of which became the state of Israel in 1948), Sudan (1956), British Somaliland (which became part of Somalia in 1960), Kuwait (1961), Bahrain (1971), Oman (1971), Qatar (1971), and the United Arab Emirates (1971). Under the present arrangement China provides water flow data during the Monsoon and not year-round. Its dam building activities on the Mekong has been a diplomatic issue with the Indo-Chinese states. Anu Sree Petroleum or crude oil is the liquid which comes straight out of the oil wells. This liquid is of little use because it is a mix of various hydrocarbons each having a different boiling point and ignition temperature and hence it is necessary to separate them for efficient use. The separation is done by a simple process known as fractional distillation. These hydrocarbons have progressive boiling points, so they can be easily separated by distillation heating the oil and pulling out different products at different vaporizing temperatures. Using this method, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), petrol, kerosene, diesel and lubricating oils are separated from each other. The residual is processed to extract asphalt, tar and wax. Like

October 27 at 12:45am

Anu Sree *Genetic engineering in crop production is not a new concept but the precision and the direct manipulation of genetic material surpasses the traditional method. *In the traditional way of genetic engineering, desired traits are selected through crosses between crops and their wild relatives. *This method is laborious and less precise when compared to modern genetic engineering. *Modern genetic engineering uses recombinant DNA technology (also known as gene technology or modern biotechnology) which allows certain desired genetic traits to be transferred into the crop plant from wild relatives, other distantly related plants or from any other organisms totally unrelated to the crop plants. These genetically modified plants (GM plants) are then cultivated to produce GM foods. *A crop plant can develop resistance to insects if the gene for toxin production from the bacterium bacillus thuringiensis has been incorporated into it. This toxin is currently used as a conventional insecticide and is considered safe for human consumption. *GM crops which permanently produced this toxin have been shown to require lower quantities of insecticides. *Another example is achieving viral resistance in crop plants. By introducing a gene from certain viruses which cause diseases in plants to a crop plant, the GM crop plant is now less susceptible to plant diseases. This translates into higher yields for the farmer October 27 at 12:45am 3606466 Like Anu Sree COURTESY - IOD October 27 at 12:45am 3606468 Like

Self renewal: the ability to go through numerous cycles of cell division while maintaining the undifferentiated state

Potency: the capacity to differentiate into specialised cell types

In developing embryos, stem cells can differentiate into all of the specialised embryonic tissues

In adult organisms, stem cells act as a repair system for the body, replenishing specialised cells

Stem cells also maintain the normal turnover of regenerative organs such as blood, skin or tissues

Stem cells can be grown and transformed into specialised cells of various tissues such as muscles and nerves using cell culture

Stem cell treatment holds the potential of transforming human medicine, wherein stem cells introduce new cells into damaged tissue in order to treat a disease or injury

Anu Sree It is a process by which an organisation accounts for its social performance to its stakeholders and seeks to improve its future social performance. Social auditing is a way to document and hold a company accountable for its social and ethical business practices. Social Audit is a process of evaluation and reporting which is similar, in some respects to a financial audit but focuses on social performance rather than financial performance. It is a tool for evaluating how satisfactorily an organisation has discharged its social responsibility. Thus, it provides the strongest and indisputable direct evidence for inputs, processes, financial and physical reporting, compliance verification, assurance against misuse, fraud and misappropriation, and utilisation of resources and assets. Social Audit is a reform tool aimed at strengthening accountability and transparency in the implementation of projects and policies. It is a method for organisation to plan the internal and external consequences of the organisations social and commercial operations October 26 at 1:53am 3600975 Like

Anu Sree Beni-off zone A dipping planar (flat) zone of earthquakes that is produced by the interaction of a downgoing oceanic crustal plate with a continental plate. These earthquakes can be produced by slip along the subduction thrust fault or by slip on faults within the downgoing plate as a result of bending and extension as the plate is pulled into the mantle. Anu Sree The Man Booker Prize was instituted in 1969 to reward the best' novel of the year written by a citizen of a Commonwealth country or the Republic of Ireland. This annual prize is so influential now that it transforms the fortunes of authors and their publishers. But once in a while it seems to get deflected from its stated purpose, giving rise to the suspicion that it is awarded not so much for the book in contention as for the whole body of work of the writer. Anu Sree Paid news or paid content are those articles in newspapers, magazines and the electronic media, which indicate favourable conditions for the institution that has paid for it. The news is much like an advertisement but without the ad tag. This kind of news has been considered a serious malpractice since it deceives the citizens, not letting them know that the news is, in fact, an advertisement. Secondly , the payment modes usually violate tax laws and election spending laws. More seriously, it has raised electoral concerns because the media has a direct influence on voters. Like
