Procedure: Teachers Activity A. Preliminary Activities 1. Greetings Good afternoon class! 2. Checking of Attendance May I know who is absent in Group 1? Group 2? Group 3? Very Good! 3. Checking of Assignment Do we have an assignment? Let us check your homework if there is. 4. Review Before we proceed to our todays lesson, I would like to know if you still have the learnings you gained from our previous lessons. With the help of jumbled letters posted on the board, identify the words/phrases that are being described. 1. IOTNERVOUL It is the complete movement of the earth around the sun. 2. TAIOTNOR It is the spinning motion of the earth, which also causes day and night. 3. SIAX It is an imaginary point at which the earth spins. 4. LAPE EYAR It is equal to 366 days. 5. OLCCKISEWCOUERTN It is the direction of the earths movement or its axis. This means moving from west to east direction. Correct answers! Very Good! Therefore, we must bear in mind that rotation is the spinning movement on its own axis. At the same time, we learned that earth also revolves around the sun. So we are now heading for new lesson. REVOLUTION Pupils Activity

Good afternoon Sir!

Im glad to tell you that nobody is absent in our group.

B. Lesson Proper: 1. Motivation To start our lesson, would you like to play a game? Well be playing a snake orbit. Listen to my instructions! I will divide the class into 5 groups. Each group has to form a line, forming like a rollercoaster ride or snake-like. Each group has an assigned word to complete. You can complete the word by getting the letters at the back of your classmates that Ill be placing. Each group has to choose a leader who will come in front of your line and serve as the snakes head. Leaders are the only allowed of getting the letters. Members must follow your leader as you go along and help in finding and collecting the letters. I am also placing a chair in the center. You are tasked to avoid or refrain from moving the chair. Post your completed word on the board. At last, raise your flags when youre done. You only have 5 minutes to accomplish this. Do you clearly understand?

Yes!

Yes, sir! Do you have any question about our games rule? Time starts now. (After 5 minutes) Let me check if you accomplish completing the word. ELLIPSE REVOLVE ORBITAL MOTION ROTATE Very Good! Yes

2. Presentation Class, the topic we shall have for today is about the earths orbit. And you will encounter some of these words that you completed as we go further in our discussion. Obviously, the chair I placed in the center was unfortunately moved. Who moved the chair? The reason why someone bumped and moved that chair is because youre not following a fixed and safe path. Now, do you think the earth also follows a path as it moves around the sun? Yes! Definitely, the earth follows a path as it revolves around the sun. This path is called orbit. Let us say orbit. Very Good! To know more things in line with earths orbit, let us watch this video presentation. (Play a video presentation about earths orbit, geocentrism and heliocentrism, and perihelion and aphelion) C. Concept Formation: Based from the video we watched, what can you say about the earths orbit? Sir, the earths orbit is the following path of the earth as it revolves around the sun. Orbit

Sir, I unintentionally moved the chair.

Excellent! The orbit is the imaginary elliptical path of the earth as it revolves around the sun. This image shows the shape of the earths orbit. What do you think is the shape of earths orbit?

Ellipse Elliptical

Good The earths orbit is a nearly circular ellipse in shape. Now, what do you think is the main purpose or importance of earths orbit?

It serves as a path of the earth to avoid bumping or banging with the other planets and celestial bodies.

Exactly! Very Good! Class, we also watched 2 theories about earths orbit and revolution. First, we have geocentrism. Kindly read what geocentrism is.

Geocentrism is the theory that the earth is at the center of the solar system. It was proposed by a Greek scientist Claudius Ptolemy.

Very Good! Look at the first illustration. According to Claudius Ptolemy, earth is the center of the Solar System. As we can see, the sun, other planets and even other celestial objects orbits or revolves around it. The second theory is the heliocentrism. Let us read what heliocentrism in chorus.

Heliocentrism is the theory that the sun as at the center of the solar system. Nicolas Copernicus presented a full discussion of heliocentric model of the universe.

Again, look at the second illustration. This shows opposition to what Ptolemy has proposed. According to Nicolas Copernicus, the sun is the center of the solar system. This means planets and other celestial objects orbits or revolves around it. Which do you think between the 2 theories were rejected? Geocentric was rejected. Which do you think between the 2 theories were widely accepted? Correct! It has been accepted and proven that the sun is the center of the solar system. Heliocentric was widely accepted and proven.

Moving on! Since earths orbit is not a perfect circular in shape but a circular ellipse, there comes a time that our planet gets closer and gets farther in the sun. Look at the 3rd illustration, what did you notice? Great answer! When the earth is closest to the sun in its orbit, we call this Perihelion. Kindly, say Perihelion Very Good! Meanwhile, look at the last illustration. What do you perceive? Sir, The earth is at its farthest distance to the sun in its orbit. Ok! Correct! When the earth is farthest from the sun, we call this Aphelion. Let us say Aphelion. Very Good! Do you have questions related to our lesson? None Ok! D. Generalization: Let me know if you really understand our lesson. Let us sum up our lesson by having a game. Lets have crown of knowledge game. Listen! I am going to play music, once I play it you have to pass this crown to your seatmate. Once I stop the music, the one whos holding this must wear this crown and answer my question. For every correct answer, I will give you a small token. Are you ready? Yes, sir! Do you now believe that the earth is revolving in its path or orbit? Then, what is an earths orbit? Yes! Sir, the orbit is the imaginary elliptical path of the earth as it revolves around the sun. Aphelion Perihelion

The earth is at its closest distance to the sun in its orbit.

Correct! What is the difference between geocentrism and heliocentrism? Geocentrism is the theory that the earth is at the center of the solar system where the sun, other planets and even other celestial objects orbits or revolves around it.

Very Good! What is Perihelion? Perihelion is when the earth is closest to the sun in its orbit.

Correct Finally, what is Aphelion?

Aphelion is when the earth is farthest to the sun in its orbit.

Very Good! E. Application: What do you think will happen if the earth does not follow an orbit as it moves around the sun?

Very Good! IV. Evaluation: Matching Type: Match Column A to Column B. Letters only. A. ______1. It is a theory stating that the earth is the center of the solar system. ______2. It is a theory stating that the sun is the center of the solar system. ______3. It is a phenomenon when the earth is at its farthest distance to the sun in its orbit. ______4. . It is the imaginary elliptical path of the earth as it revolves around the sun. ______5. . It is a phenomenon when the earth is at its farthest distance to the sun in its orbit. B. A. Aphelion B. Perihelion C. Heliocentrism D. Geocentrism E. Ellipse F. Orbit

If the earth does not follow an orbit, earth might bump or collide with other planets or with any other celestial objects. This may really cause damage in our planet.
