3. The most important functions to operate the sonar

Here is a description of the basic the user had to know to operate the sonar.

Switch on the sonar by pressing the POWER switch. It will light up The computer will start up and After a short time will the sonar picture be shown on the screen

Check the depth under the keel and the sonar hoist. Remember that the hoist will lower up to 1500mm below the Press the Down switch, and the LED will start flashing In the top left corner can you always see the position of the hoist. When you lower the hoist, the bar will be filled more and more. When the bar is filled 50%, is the hoist 50% down or approx 75 cm. You can stop the hoist movement at any time by pressing the STOP button. When the hoist is 40% down the transmitting will start automatically, and the transducer is outside the trunk. If the STOP buttons are not touched, the hoist will be lowered down 100% automatically. When the transmitter is running you can see echoes on the screen. Adjust the sensitivity and the echo strength by operating the GAIN buttons. More sensitivity with the button and less with the button. The Gain value is shown in large letters on the screen when you operate the buttons, and always shown under the tilt value. Example: Gain 3.5 Normally is the value set between 3.5 and 7.0.

Note: on the first software version is it necessary to lower the hoist 66% to start TX

Then adjust the RANGE (search distance on the screen) up or down with the or buttons Select an proper range depending on what you are searching for. For search, use and distance between 1000 - 4000 metres, and to follow a located fish shoal, 300 - 800 metres. Used range is always displayed in the upper right part of the screen. Example: CR 1500 (C= track correction on, and R = Range)

Adjust the tilt down so you can detect the fish at the selected depth and distance. Are you looking for fish up in the surface, use 0 to 10. For search on short distance and/or in deep sea the tilt can be used down to 60. If you put the marker at the edge of the screen it is easy to check the depth of the sonar beam at that range. The depth is shown after the vertical arrow .

5.4.1 Receiver
The sonar has independent adjustment of the horizontal and vertical picture. In principal do both work the same way.

Clutter (hor)
Remove weak echoes from the screen from 0.0 - 10.0 (Normally 1.0)

STC Level (hor)

Damping of the receiver from 0-160 meter from the boat, from 0.0 - 10.0 (Normally 2.0)

Clutter (vert)
Remove weak echoes from the screen from 0.0 - 10.0 (Normally 1.0)

STC level (vert)

Damping of the receiver from 0-100 meter from the boat, from 0.0 - 10.0 (Normally 2.0)

Gain 10.0

Max Gain

40 log

STC 0.0 5 log STC 10.0 0 160m STC TVG (Mid) 640m TVG (far) Gain

The receivers Gain is very accurate adjusted to the range you are using in the sonar. When the Gain curve is correct is it possible to keep the same echo strength on a target at long and short range without adjusting the Gain. Due to different sea conditions will the damping factor in the sea always change. Normally is it only necessary to adjust the Gain up or down. But if the echo's (fish) is too strong on long distance compare to a short distance (or opposite), can this be adjusted with the STC, TVG Far or Mid. Above is the function of the TVG and STC shown. To continue with the example where the fish is disappearing on a short range, can a change in the TVG (Mid) from 20 log to 10 log help on this, The Gain will then be lowered on the long distance since the Gain use a longer distance to raise to the same level. You may have to compensate by adjusting up the Gain to get it perfect. If the problem is opposite, change the value on TVG (Mid) to a higher value. Max Gain is set in the Service menu (see chapter 6.2.1.4), and is deciding the maximum sensitivity of the sonar. If the Max Gain level is too high, will you end up with a lot of noise on Max range.

Copy from an other computer (for experts only)

The memory card in the sonar is an standard CF memory card used in cameras etc. By using an CF card reader true PCMCIA or USB is it easy to copy the settings in and out from the card. These settings can easily be sent on Email since they are quite small. You can not send the files on Std-C as text since some letters will disappear. Use a standard mail software and send the file as attachments. The 8 files are stored under root on the memory card and are named Mem01.dat Mem08.dat. Each file had to be 6636 letters. Name and location can note be changed if you want to reach them in the sonar software. But you can make new folders on the card and store other copies there, then you can have almost unlimited settings stored. If you use other CF cards, can any CF card between 4 and 128MB be used. Take care that these cards is formatted in FAT. In windows. The sonar can be on when you replace the CF card, but he first time, make sure that the power is off if you drop one of the screws on the locking plate. Locate the memory card in the upper left corner. Loose the locking plate and remove the card. Remove the card from the card reader. Put on the locking plate again when done.

5.5. Program the sonar

When the sonar leaves the factory is it programmed to the pre-set standard setting. This setting is just making the sonar working. To optimise the sonar for the use is our areas are it required to do some change in the settings. These settings are known as Moltech standard. Moltech Norge have after testing and failing found the most ideal setting for the North European fishery under all conditions.

The sonar has 8 separate setting memorys who is programmed. When almost all the settings is the same in all 8 program, is it the easiest way to optimise the Sonar 1 setting first, copy it in to all the others on the external memory card. Do the small changes in the one who is different. They are then stored in each external memory. When everything is done, can you select All copy, and copy the external card in to the internal card.
Max Gain had to be adjusted to the ships noise level. If everything is perfect should you have a clean picture with a little blue colour noise at max. range and Gain when Max Gain is set to E0. If the value had to be adjusted below A0 do you have a serious noise problem. A low Max Gain value will make a weak sonar and reduced range performance. For these boats can an optimum Max Gain be stored under Sonar 5,6 and 7. Noise is normally created from the propeller or bad shaped sounder shoos, or hull

propeller Sonar Transducer

Pre-set of the maximum sensitivity for the sonar. The value had to be pre-set during the sea-trial. A value too low will make a sonar with a short Max range, and a too high value will make a sonar with a lot of noise on the screen. The value is depending on the noise-level onboard the ship at normal search speed(Normally A0)

6.2.1.5 RX Vr
Set-up of the maximum Gain level in the preamplifier Shall normally not be adjusted (Standard FF)

6.2.1.4 TVG mid

Setting of the Gain curve from the and out to 640 meter. (Normally 10 log)

Gain 10.0

Max Gain

40 STC 0.0 5 log STC 10.0 0 160m STC TVG (Mid) 640 TVG (far) Gain

The receivers Gain is very accurate adjusted to the range you are using in the sonar. When the Gain curve is correct is it possible to keep the same echo strength on a target at long and short range without adjusting the Gain. Due to different sea conditions will the damping factor in the sea always change. Normally is it only necessary to adjust the Gain up or down. But if the echo's (fish) is too strong on long distance compare to a short distance (or opposite), can this be adjusted with the STC, TVG Far or Mid. Above is the function of the TVG and STC shown. To continue with the example where the fish is disappearing on a short range, can a change in the TVG (Mid) from 20 log to 10 log help on this, The Gain will then be lowered on the long distance since the Gain use a longer distance to raise to the same

level. You may have to compensate by adjusting up the Gain to get it perfect. If the problem is opposite, change the value on TVG (Mid) to a higher value. Max Gain (see chapter 6.2.1.), is deciding the maximum sensitivity of the sonar. If the Max Gain level is too high, will you end up with a lot of noise on Max range.

6.2.1.5 TVG far

Setting of the Gain curve from 640 meter and out (Normally 20 log)

6.2.3 AGC
Set-up for the receivers Automatic Gain Control.

6.2.3.1 AGC type

Selection of AGC type Off - The sonar's Gain is done manual only. AGC- The sonar is damping down the receiver-Gain automatic if strong echoes is detected, and goes back to the set Gain when the signal-strength is lower than the AGC level. RCG- Works like AGC, but strong echoes will affect the Gain of the sonar after a strong echo is detected. Strong echoes close to the boat will lower the Gain on long range . The Gain-control is working in the preamplifier and work over a wider Gain than AGC. TAG- A combination of AGC and RCG Note: The sonar work normally best without any AGC on. The receiver in the Kaijo sonar have such a high Gain-range and extreme low side-lobes horizontally, that you don't get the typically overriding on strong echoes as on other sonar's. Use of AGC makes it very difficult to see the difference between strong echoes and very strong echoes. When the vertical picture need the RCG ON is it necessary to have this function on and in stead adjust the horizontal RCG level to 00 Under some conditions with hard bottom can the AGC function have some positive effect. (Normally RCG).)

6.2.3.2 RCG Level (hor)

Adjustment of the RCG level when used. An higher value makes a heavier damping (Normally 80 or 0 for off)

6.2.3.3 AGC level (hor) Adjustment of the AGC level when used. An higher value makes a heavier damping. (Normally 40) 6.2.3.4 RCG Level (vert) Adjustment of the RCG. Programming of the user colour-bar on the screen. If you are not satisfied with one of the pre-set colours on the screen, is it possible to make your own User colour (See chapter 6.1.2.2). the sonar is using 32 colours, colour 0 is the background and is normally black un an LCD monitor. The first menu get access to 4 groups of colours 0-7,8-15,16-23, 24-32. Select one of the groups. When programming the colours do you need a lot of time and try back and forward to find a good combination for all colours. If you want to make a clutter function is it possible to program the weakest colours to the background colour. When you select this menu is it no necessary to select User in the colour selection first. To create a new colour do you use the 3 ground colours red, green and blue. Each colour can be set in to 256 levels in the value from 00 to FF. When all colours are 00 is the colour black and when all is FF is it white. When you mix several colours , example red and green do you get yellow etc. Click on the colour and then + or to adjust. To check the result, press Enter. You can also select one letter in the value to make the adjustment faster, ex. 20,30,40 etc . Remember to store the setting in one program, if not is it gone when you load a new setting.

The Kaijo DCG-200 Current machine (Doppler log) and sonar's is made to work together. You get in addition to the ship speed, as any other log, also a lot of useful information's from the DCG. The DCG-200 is also connected to the GPS and you can select if you want the speed and drift from the bottom, water or GPS on the DCG-200 Drift directly in to the sonar. You don't have to keep the boat in constant movement to get the drift influence as small as possible due to strong wind and current etc. You can slow down and watch and estimate the true shoal speed. Data about course and speed on 3 current-layers shown on the screen.. (on/off, see chapter 6.1.3.6) Vectors on current-speed and direction on cast mark and net finder-marks. 8 Maintenance and trouble shooting

The sonar is constructed to need an minimum of maintenance. If the maintenance is done correctly will you have an trouble-free sonar for may years.

8.1 Maintenance on the bridge.

On the bridge is the maintenance limited to the duster and cleaning. The interval is depending of the environment on the bridge. NEVER use thinner, Acetone, concentrated cleaning liquid , spray from the engine room or cleaning liquid for something. Use a mild liquid for windows etc. ON a soft cloth. The Monitor: Use window cleaning liquid ON a soft cloth and dry off the screen. Special anti-static cleaner for monitors can also be used. For difficult spots, use more liquid on the cloth and rub carefully. Take care that liquid is not leaking in to the monitor. If the screen gets discoloured in the corners due to magnetism, press Degauss - button on the monitor front one or several times. If you still have discolour problems, check the monitor surroundings for any magnetic materials as speakers etc. When the monitor is installed or if any rebuilding is done on the bridge, is it important to check that the monitor is not overheating due to bad or none air circulation. Any overheating will deteriorate the lifetime of the monitor. The operating unit: Use window cleaning liquid ON a soft cloth and dry carefully off. Clean the roller ball by rolling around in an almost dry cloth. NEVER use thinner, Acetone, concentrated cleaning liquid , spray from the engine room or cleaning liquid for something. Use a mild liquid for windows etc. Is the operating unit portable, take care of damages on the cable and plug. PRC-43 processor: Don't normally need any maintenance. If you get problems that the response of the marker, and picture is hanging can the problem be that the processor fan in the computer is blocked with dirt. Clean it carefully for dirt or replace. Take care that the fan air inlet is not blocked. If the fan is noisy or stops, is it important to replace it immediately. When the processor is installed or if any rebuilding is done on the bridge, is it important to check that the processor is not overheating due to bad or none air circulation. Any overheating will deteriorate the lifetime of the processor.

8.2 Maintenance in the sonar-room

Since all sonar rooms are different, is the service-intervals depending on environment. A dry temperate and dustfree sonar-room only needs maintenance 2 -4 times a year, and a moist dirty room need constant maintenance. Normally should there be an maintenance routine together with an responsible engineer onboard the ship or/and person(s) who is responsible for the maintenance. Transmitter/receiver unit: Don't normally need any maintenance. Take care that the fans air inlet is not blocked. If any fan is noisy or stops, is it important to replace it immediately. After any construction-work close to the sonar-room is it important to check the units in the sonar-room for clean dust and/or metal particles who can be floating around before the sonar(s) is started up. The transmitter unit has very strong cooling fans that can suck in metal particles and cause short-circuits and faults. Also take care of moist in and around the units. Hoist unit: The hoist needs maintenance, oiling and cleaning. During each dry docking should the hoist be inspected for damages. If possible should the hoist be lowered down and checked. Also take care that there is enough zinc anodes closer than 50 cm from the trunk on the starboard, port and behind. Is the zinc anodes completely gone is the amount too little. The hoist unit have zinc anodes mounted on the flange. Since these blocks can be difficult to reach and replace, is it important that there is enough zinc on the outside of the hull. The blocks on the flange will last app. 2 years if there is enough zinc on the outside Lack of zinc will cause corrosion and damages on the hoist.

English Usermanual 8.3 Fault tracing

KAIJO KCS-2200Z

The most common faults are in connection with lack of power (220V) from the switch board on bridge or in the sonar room. Start fault tracing on the top of the list.

8.3.1 Hoist
. The hoist is not moving up or down, The sonar will also be impossible to switch off. If there has been a power drop onboard the boat can this happen, and the processor have lost the contact with the hoist. Turn off the sonar with the On/off switch, and then press the emergency stop switch (the red one). Then switch on the sonar and try to operate the hoist from the bridge. If anyone have been down in the sonar-room and done some testes, make sure that they left the Test-switch on the hoist in "AUTO" position, and if anyone has tried the manual handle. The handle had to be back in the box since there is an kill-switch in the box that make sure that no-one can operate the hoist from the bridge. The hoist is not moving up or down "No contact with the hoist or receiver " is displayed on the screen. Normally is this caused by a missing AC100V in the sonar-room. The fault is normally a blown mains fuse (220V, 16 amp 1 phase) in the sonar-room or in the ship bow-section. This can happen during repair or generator problems onboard (blackout). Switch on the fuse again. The hoist is not moving up or down, "sarmal error" is displayed on the screen. The 220V 3 phase to the hoist motor is missing. The cause can be that the hoist is stuck due to something on the transducer, net, rope etc. if it happens under fishery. Anyway try to fix the problem in an electrical way before you use the manual handle. Motor protection is switched off in the relay box on the hoist. Take off the cover and reset the protectionrelay. The fuse from the mains is out. (16 amp 3 phase). Switch on the fuse. Somebody have reversed the 220V 3 phase to the hoist. Check other motors etc. on the same board if they run correctly. The hoist has an phase fault relay built in. The hoist is not moving down, The indicator for the hoist is telling that the hoist is down, but it is not. Check the lower limit switch on the hoist. It can be stuck and give faulty information's. Clean and oil the mechanic part on the switch, or replace. The hoist is not moving up, The indicator for the hoist is telling that the hoist is up, but it is not. Check the upper limit switch on the hoist. It can be stuck and give faulty information's. Clean and oil the mechanic part on the switch, or replace. Operate the hoist in the sonar-room. Take off the cover on the relay-box on the hoist. If you operate the hoist during dry-docking, NEVER switch on the sonar at the bridge. When the hoist is lowered, will the transmitter start automatically, and you will/can damage the transducer. To be 100%, switch off the main fuse for the sonar on the bridge Locate the switch "Auto/Manual". This switch must always be left in Auto when you finish working on the hoist. If not is it impossible to operate the hoist from the bridge. When the switch is in Manual, will the red LED's be bright on the PCB, if not, check fuses for AC100 Volt. Locate the switch "Up/Down". By operate this switch will the hoist normally move up or down If the relays is clicking and the hoist is not moving, check the 220V 3phase from the mains. If the relays are not clicking, check that the motor-protection relay is in. Also check the limit-switches and the manual handle switch.

KAIJO KCS-2200Z

Last chance If it is impossible to run the hoist with the "Up/Down" switch, is it possible to emergency run the hoist. By pressing the large relays can you run the hoist-motor directly. PLEASE TAKE CARE OF FOLLOWING: When you run these relays is the limit switches not operating. Never run the hoist longer than you can see that the limit switches is activated. If you overrun the hoist can you damage cables and spindle, or run the hoist to it gets stuck. Manual handle Before you can use the handle, do you also need 4mm Hex key. The tools are in the toolbox. Locate two set-screws for the 4mm Hex key on each side of the motor. Remove the screws first and check if a spacer is fit on the screws, if so remove them and screw them all the way in to realise the break. If you don't do this will it is real hard work. Take off the cover on the top of the motor, and locate the bolt where the handle fit. When you operate the handle should it move smoothly. If it gets stuck, NEVER try to force it. If it is stuck is it a reason for it. A net around the Realise settransducer is impossible to cut with the handle, you only risk damaging the screws for chain spindle etc. motor break Never use air-pressure tools or similar on the motor if it is stuck. It can damage the motor, gear and all parts that can't move. When you finish the work, loose out the 2 set screws so the break is back on again. Fit the spacers and tight up the screws so they dont fall out until you need them the next time. Fit the cover and all loosened parts.. Inclinometer test In the control box on the hoist is the inclinometer located in the upper right corner. The inclinometer is registrating the ship movement in 4 directions X axes and the Y axes. The inclinometer had to be moved if the hoist is installed in any other direction than the control box is on the starboard side.. Test the inclinometer Locate Dipswitch DS2 Switch on Sw 3 and 4 for to read X-axes. The value is in degrees on the display. KAIJO KCS-2200Z

This operations is only for skilled engineers. You should never be playing with this settings or do modifications or changes in the PRC-43. This is a sonar, not a toy. You had to connect an keyboard and mouse to the PC-board inside PRC-43 for this operation. Restart the sonar. Press ESC on the keyboard to stop the sonar software. The sonar software and hardware is working together in the following way: The sonar software runs the visual sonar program on an P4 computer under windows 2000. The operating system is stored on an silicone hard disk without any moving parts. The computer is connected to various other interface cards true 4 or 5 USB connectors inside PRC-43. For copying settings and software is a CF-card reader installed inside PRC-43. The sonar software is stored under c:\Program Files\Sonar\. In the main folder is the Sonarld.ini file who tell about the location for the sonar software.( C:\Program Files\Sonar\versionnumber\DDSonare.exe" ). In the software folder is following files stored: DDSonare.exe The sonar software running in Direct Draw format 1280x1024. Ddsonar.bmp The start-up picture for the sonar Sonar.exe The main start-up program for DDsonare, it is only making a 10 sec. delay for ddsonare.exe before it start to make sure that all USB coms is up running. Menufile1.csv Cmdfile1.csv These 2 files are the menu files for the sonar in language1. They are created in the menu-creator software (an xls file) on an external computer. SonarComm.dll dll file for ddsonare.exe for the communication to external equipment. Sonarcomm.ini The setup for the sonar communication to the USB hardware. This file should never be replaced when you upgrade the software. Memory folder contain all the sonar settings 1-8 + the one used at the moment called Backup.dat Manual setup for Sonarcomm.ini. Kaijo have changed the port number between the first and latest models due to some small modifications. Since Win2000 is plug_and_play is the COM numbers floating. This can easily be checked by double-click on the USB icon next to the clock in the lower right hand corner of the screen. Following list is then displayed on the screen: If you then open Sonarcomm.ini in Notepad should the settings in this file correspond to the hardware. If there is change in hardware (Adaptec USB card) or windows settings, should the Sonarcomm.ini file be updated manually in notepad. USB Mass Storage Device should always have the letter M: , if this is changed is it impossible to store and load external settings. The letter is modified in control Panel Administrative tools and Disk [ISU] manager. Rename the USB disk letter to M:. ISU (data from external equipment): Change the COMMPORT = number to correspond with the correct one in the Hardware list, SCU Command/ctrl SCU Data FCU is used for the echo sounder option PCB. Never change other values than the comport.. If there are problems with communication with cable problems or dead pcbs will they disappear from the list. The advantage with USB is that these connections can be plugged and unplugged without restart, so fault tracing is easy.

Inside the PRC-43 will you locate the CF card reader. Loose the 2 lock screws to remove the
locking plate. Then is it possible to remove the CF card. The CF card is an 32MB card (CFS32M), but any CF card from 4 to 128Mb can be used For connection to an external PC is it necessary to use an CF card reader, either an USB or an PC card adapter. The CF card should be displayed as shown on the right. It contain from factory 8 files, mem0108.dat. These files are the 8 settings for the sonar software. To replace the settings, overwrite these with new ones, plug in the memory card in the sonar and select All copy in the menu to load the new settings in to the sonar. The card can also include the sonar software and any data ,and have normally 31.8Mb free space for this. If you want to collect different settings, make a new folder on the CF card and store them there.

8.5 Upgrade the sonar software

The new software had to be stored on an CF card or a USB memorystick A memorystic is easiest connected in the PRC-43 by unplugging the cable in to the CF card reader. First make sure that you have stored the sonarsettings to the card.Select: Menu- Users memory All memo Copy Save. You had to connect an keyboard and mouse to the PC-board inside PRC-43 for this operation. Restart the sonar.
