Senior Housing Development Update

Around Town Page 2 ---------------Milestones ChurchChat Page 3 ---------------LibraryParks &Recreation Page 4 ---------------By Lisa yako The new senior housing development located at the southeast corner of Berlin and Cleveland roads is well underway and on schedule for completion. The development is being constructed for and managed by Miller Valentine Group of Cincinnati. Miller Valentine has been in business for 60 years and in the residential housing business for the past 20 years. The company has developed, owns, and manages, over 10,000 housing units throughout the Midwest and Southeast. Their holdings include developments in Whitehouse and Sylvania Township in suburban Toledo, similar to the one being constructed in Huron. The requirements for residency at the new development will relate to both age and income level. Specifically, residents must be 55 or older and have an adjusted median household income of 60% or less of the median in-

come in Huron. The development will contain 12 1-story cottages each with 2 bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, and an attached 1-car garage and 1 3-story building with an elevator that contains 33 units each with 1 or 2 bedrooms. All units will be 100% accessible and include a myriad of amenities. The development will also include amenities such as on-site management, a theater, fitness center, busi-

ness center, club/banquette rooms, outdoor recreation space, picnic shelter, senior service plans, and community gardens. According to Schwiegeraht, the service plans include access to transportation, meals programs, medical referral, a residents association, regularly scheduled programs and activities, and linkage to other local programs and services providers. The facility will also adhere to Enterprise Green Standards. Miller Valentine expects the ranch-style cottages in the Huron development to be ready for occupancy in June of this year. The units in the 3-story building will be ready by late fall. Miller Valentine is currently taking contact information from parties interested in living in the new development. If you would like more information about leasing a unit, contact Miller Valentine at www.yournextplacetolive.com or at 1-800-329-7348.

Fisher Titus to Break Ground on North Side

Design plans for a multi-purpose medical office facility on Norwalks north side are being finalized by Fisher-Titus Medical Center with groundbreaking scheduled for late spring. Fisher-Titus President Patrick Martin announced plans to expand services to the north end of Norwalk in November 2011 with the purchase of property on Milan Avenue (US RT 250) between Bob Evans Restaurant and the TSC (Tractor Supply Company) store. Since purchasing the property, a team has been working on the project to determine the best combination of services for this area of our community, Martin said. Over the years, residents have expressed a desire for additional Norwalk locations for various hospital and other health-care services. The first phase of the more than 10,000-squarefoot facility will feature hospital-based services including an urgent /after hours care clinic, industrial health services, laboratory services, and rehabilitation services. Each area will have its own office space to provide quality services and meet the specific needs of patients seeking those services. This new location will provide more convenient access for our Industrial Health clients who come from all over north central Ohio for services, said John Kovesdi, MD, medical director of Fisher-Titus Industrial Health Services. The initial major non-hospital tenant will be Northern Ohio Foot and Ankle Specialists, the practice of Drs. Mark and Kareem Dolce and Dr. Nicholas Brown. The practice will fill a 3,400-square- foot office space in the facility. Prior to purchasing the property several of our physician practices expressed inter-

est in a location on the northern end of the city, Martin said. With a growing practice and the addition of Dr. Nicholas Brown to their team, Drs. Mark and Kareem needed to expand their space and this was the perfect fit. They, along with the others involved, have contributed significantly to the design process. Several opportunities remain, Martin added.

We will be able to add new tenants to phase one, and there is enough property for a second and third phase as the site develops, Martin said. We also look forward to another productive year for the Community Garden which is also a part of this development. We hope to expand from last years pilot program if there is community interest.

Bowling Green State University Firelands Colleges 40th Annual University Business Symposium on Tuesday, Feb. 26 puts a focus on the growing business of healthcare. In north central Ohio, the healthcare industry continues to flourish despite an economic period that saw reductions in nearly every other sector. A recent survey of area businesses indicated that employers in the health care fields are now hiring at rates greater than other industries, and this trend will continue into the future. Many hospitals and medical facilities have benefited from recent expansions as the tricounty area has become a recognized leader in providing health care. Nationally and locally, health care is among the fastest growing and most popular occupational sectors. Healthcare is about jobs, but also the vitality of a community: to help everyone reach his/her potential of a long and healthy life, and to help a community deal proactively with an aging population and lifestyle challenges. Free and open to the public, the Symposium series was created to provide students, faculty, the business community, and others an opportunity to exchange ideas concerning business topics. Featured speakers for the Feb. 26 event are Patrick Martin, president & CEO of Fisher-Titus Medical Center, and Martin Tursky, president & CEO of Firelands Regional Medi-

A committee of Huron City Schools administrators and teachers are working together as they revise the teacher evaluation policies and procedures. The formation of the committee is in response to House Bill 153, Senate Bill 316 and House Bill 555 and will ultimately present a huge change in the way teachers and principals are evaluated. The Ohio Teacher Evaluation System (OTES) model is designed to lead school districts in the planning and execution of a uniformed and valuable teacher evaluation system based on state and federal criteria. This newly defined system outlines effective teaching and supports teachers professional growth and development. To ready the district for this standards-based evaluation framework, administrators: Ms. Tanny Vonthron, Mr. Mark Doughty, Mr. Chad Carter, Mr. Scott Matheny, Mr. Tony Munafo, Mrs. Holly Charville, and Ms. Chris Standring, along with teachers: Mrs. Mary James, Mr. Darius Shaeffer, Ms. Brooke Kukay, Mrs. Andrea Arambula, Mrs. Sherry Rowen, Mrs. Jessie Gimperling, Mrs. Laura Harkelroad, Mrs. Elizabeth Krupp, Mrs. Diane Berryhill, Mrs. Karen Lamb, Mrs. Ingrid Ritzler and Mrs. Louise Hoty are working together to reach consensus on various components of the evaluation system. Ms. Chris Standring and Mrs. Andrea Arambula attended the Student Learning Outcomes training to learn the Train-the-Trainer models. The evaluation system provides for multiple evaluation factors, including student academic growth that accounts for fifty percent of each evaluation.

The first fifty percent of the teacher evaluation will be based on Teacher Performance. This includes two (2) formal observations by the evaluator of at least thirty minutes and classroom walk through. Two sub-committees now are working to establish the pre- and post-conference questions, outlining the walkthrough procedures and protocols and finding an appropriate walkthrough application that will allow for the teacher to receive feedback as soon as possible. The other half of the fifty percent of the teacher evaluation will be based on Student Growth Measures. These Student Growth Measures will be based on a combination of measures such as, the value-added data derived by the Ohio Achievement Assessments in the fourth through eighth grade, vendor state-approved assessments, and local educational association measures. The procedures for the evaluation of principals will also be based on principles comparable to the teacher evaluation policy but shall be tailored to the duties and responsibilities of the principal. This twenty-member committee is meeting to work out the details of the policy to present to the Huron City School Board this coming May. Selected buildings and teachers will be piloting this new system during the 2013 2014 school year to ready the district for the full implementation in 2014 2015. For further information, contact: Chris Standring, Curriculum Director at 419.433-1822.

Rev. Rogers Reflections

Upright and just he was In all his ways A bright example in degenerate days. That was the epitaph of one Henry R. Smith: December 19, 1848 October 30, 1915. What do you think of that as a legacy? It was found on the family farm at the top of a hill by the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Lavonia, Georgia. For my sister Renee and me, he would have been our greatgreat grandfather. The farm had been a gift from a grateful nation to Henry Smith, Jr. for fighting in the Revolutionary War. One hundred years before the epitaph was earned, Henry Smith, Sr. immigrated to the land of opportunity from Northern Ireland, seeking freedom. Probably you have a similar story. Unless youre a Native American, we all came from somewhere else, to this land seeking freedom. Freedom to worship, freedom from hunger, freedom from poverty, freedom from tyranny, freedom from war freedom to be free. Freedom which lies deep in the human soul, dont you believe? St. Paul wrote 2,000 years ago, Since then, we have such a hope, we act with great boldness, ...Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. (2 Corinthians 3:12, 17 NRSV) My wife Joan and I went to see the movie Lincoln, which I highly recommend. Its all about freedom. My family owned at least one slave that we know of, named Phyllis, aged 57 years, valued at $300 probably did the cooking, cleaning, and raised the babies. I wonder about her dreams of freedom. Growing up in the South, I remember the vestiges of segregation: Woolworths lunch counter in Nashville, signs of white only and colored above water fountains and restrooms. Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and many others had a dream of freedom, going back to the Egyptian pharaoh and the Hebrew children escaping across the Red Sea. All of this played as a symphony upon my heart on Dr. Kings day, which also was Inauguration Day. I wonder if he ever dared dream such a dream. Regardless of political persuasion, we must admit that the yearning for freedom that beats within our hearts is God-given. It unites us as not only Americans, but one human race. From Moses to my ancestors and yours, to those bloodied on the Edmund Pettus bridge in Selma, Alabama, to those who stand up in morning worship on Veterans Sunday, freedom isnt free. Our current military personnel, firefighters, EMS, FBI, law enforcement, school teachers and parents know that freedom isnt free. As we embark upon our Lenten journey toward Easter, ours is the ultimate yearning for freedom freedom from death itself, another gift from God, bestowed upon us through his son Jesus. But this freedom certainly was not free. No, Jesus gave his earthly life for our life eternal. So, just as we should remember the sacrifices of our forbearers for our earthly freedom, let us bow our heads and remember Jesus ultimate sacrifice for you and me.

Fisher-Titus Rehabilitation Team Raises Funds for Life is Good No Matter What Foundation
As a way to remember their co-worker Holly Sneider, who died of cancer on Nov. 12, 2011, Fisher-Titus Medical Centers Walcher Rehabilitation Center employees raised $438 during a recent Change for a Change event. The staff brought in change during Physical Therapy Month and then the money was donated to Life Is Good No Matter What Foundation, a charity which was founded by Hollys brother Troy Haslinger in her memory. The organization provides a break for adults with advanced cancer by giving them a happy experience similar to what Make a Wish provides children with cancer. Sneider, who was a physical therapy assistant at Fisher-Titus, used this motto Life is Good No Matter What, during her battle with cancer. Her brother, Troy, carried on this motto through his charity. Holly was such an inspiration to her co-workers, her patients and the community, said Mary Helton, Director of Rehabilitation at Fisher-Titus. We wanted to do something in her memory as well as help continue her spirit of giving back through this worthwhile foundation. Jen Swartz of the

Haslinger and his parents, Ken and Cindy Haslinger also received a tour during their recent visit to Fisher-Titus Rehabilitation Center so that they could see where Holly worked.

Back-to-School Savings Include Tax Breaks

Computer tablets are joining paper tablets on school supply shopping lists these days. With this increase in spending, many will need to find ways to save money, and one place to start is with tax breaks. Aside from catching a sale on school supplies, saving on education costs takes some knowledge and planning, said Betti Jo Harmon, H&R Block manager in Huorn. Education savings accounts can be set up now to fulfill a variety of needs in the years to come. Taxpayers also should start saving paperwork and receipts now that serves as documentation for education tax credits and deductions they claim on their tax return. Check eligibility for education tax breaks For some taxpayers, knowing what tax credits and deductions they are entitled to can make the difference between owing taxes and receiving a tax refund. The following are frequently overlooked education tax breaks: American Opportunity Credit up to $2,500 credit for each of the first four years for each student seeking an undergraduate degree Lifetime Learning Credit up to $2,000 credit for those seeking a college or graduate degree, and those taking classes to improve job skills Student loan interest deduction up to $2,500 per year can be deducted for interest payments made on a qualified education loan Tuition and Fees Deduction up to $4,000 deduction from income for college or graduate courses. Start saving now for tuition and supplies Following are some popular ways to save for education and get tax benefits, such as tax-free distributions when used only on education expenses: Coverdell Education Savings Account use for enrollment and attendance expenses for kindergarten through graduate school, including tuition, books, computers, and room and board 529 Plans earnings grow tax-free when the proceeds are used to pay qualifying expenses and can be used for higher education expenses, such as tuition, books and fees IRAs use for education expenses for self, spouse, child or grandchild and there is no 10-percent penalty for early withdrawal Education savings bonds use proceeds to pay education expenses for self, spouse or dependents For more information about education tax breaks, contact a tax professional at the H&R Block office in Huron.

St. Peter School Kindergarten Class Celebrates 100 Days of School
The students in Mrs. Ernes Kindergarten class at St. Peter School had a fun time celebrating their 100th day of school last week. Prior to the special 100th day, each student was given a hat to take home and decorate with 100 items, and the result was everything from pipe cleaners and pom poms to LEGOS and gum balls. Throughout the day, a variety of activities and projects took place to commemorate the 100th day of school ... and the Kindergarten class is now 100 days smarter!

Top Left: Senior Aaron Casey tries to defend the key against Norwalk's potent attack; Top Right: Senior Colin McCready pulls down one of his ten rebounds in the game against Clyde; Above: Among the honored seniors were head cheerleaders Lexi Dixon and Kristen Koschutnik.

Tigers Survive Clyde

At top: Guard Morgan Welborn works hard for six points against the Blue Streaks. Above: Audra Wisehart scored eleven points against her father's team, but Troy Wisehart's Sandusky squad still won the game.

Lady Tigers Fall to Blue Streaks, 58 - 53

Despite a strong opening quarter and an 11 - 6 lead, the host Tigers went into a second quarter lull. Sandusky outscored Huron 17 - 7 in the second period to take a five point lead. Those five points cost the Tigers the games as both teams battled evenly throughout the remainder of the game. Ashley Myers led the home team with 15 points while Brittany Mayer knocked down 14 points.

The fate of a potential SBC crown is in the hands of the Huron Boys Basketball team. It has been since the big win over Perkins a couple of weeks ago. But the Flyers gave them all they could handle Friday night in Clyde. The game was in doubt until Huron seemed to gain a small measure of control in the middle of the final period. Colin McCready, Keegan Bollenbacher, and Cody Thompson each hit their free throws at the end to seal the deal, 56 - 52. Aaron Casey played well inside and led the visiting Tigers with 14 points and seven rebounds. The following evening saw the strongest

team in the area, the Norwalk Truckers, travel to Huron and Senior Night. The Division I's third ranked team in the state left no doubt why they are undefeated (21-0) against all comers in northwestern Ohio. Huron hung in there during the opening half, but the SBC leading Tigers hadn't seen defensive speed, size, and quickness like the Truckers displayed. Offensively, Norwalk had weapons all over the floor and utilized an offense that showcased their talents. The final score was 76 - 54. Huron was led by Colin McCready and Aaron Casey who had 17 and 15 points respectively.

Bowling Sectional Tournament

The Huron Tiger varsity boys bowling team traveled to Park Lanes in Mansfield for their sectional tournament and came out on top in a field of eleven. The competition was tough and the lane conditions were even tougher. Leading the way for the Tigers was Jordan Stutzman who rolled games of 200, 197 and 178 for a 575 series. Benji Battiste had a steady afternoon rolling a 201 game and a 526 series and Josh Minton had a 187 game and 505 series. The Tigers move on to the northwest district tournament at Interstate Lanes in Rossford Saturday February 23 at 5:00PM where the top 3 teams in a field of 18 move on to compete in the Ohio State High School bowling tournament in Columbus.
