Selected Records from Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application Files, 1800-1900.
On the rolls of this microfilm publication are reproduced selected genealogical records from an estimated 80,000 pension and bounty-land-warrant application files based on the participation of American military, naval, and marine officers and enlisted men in the Revolutionary War. Most of the records are dated between
Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application Files, 1800-1900. Genealogical Value of Records:
Genealogical information is usually available in a file containing original application papers. A veterans pension application normally givesin addition to his former rank unit and period of servicehis age or date of birth, his residence, and sometimes his birthplace. Property schedules often give names and ages of a veterans wife and children. The application of a widow seeking a pension or a bounty-land-warrant may give her age, residence, maiden name, date and place of her marriage, and date and place of death of her husband. A copy of a marriage record made by a town clerk, a clergyman, or a justice of the peace often accompanied the widows pension application. Application papers submitted by children and other heirs or dependents seeking pensions or bounty-land-warrants generally contain information about their ages and residences. Familyrecord pages from Bibles and other books submitted by pension and bounty-land-warrant applicants give the dates of birth, marriage, and death of family members. In a few pension files are final payment vouchers that sometimes contain information about the date and place of a pensioners death and names of heirs.
Compiled Service Records of Soldiers Who Served in the American Army During the Revolutionary War.
This microfilm publication reproduces the compiled service records of soldiers who served in the American Army during the Revolutionary War. The American forces included many types of military organizations: some created by the Continental Congresses; others by the States, towns, and counties. Regular units, authorized by the Continental Congress, formed the Continental Army, but this Army frequently was supplemented by units of militia and volunteers from the States, towns, and counties. The compiled service records reproduced here contain record for the soldiers of the Continental Army and for the militia, volunteers, and others who served with them. The larger entity is referred to in these records as the American Army. A typical infantry regiment in the Continental Army, generally referred to as a regiment or battalion without the designation infantry, might contain field officers, such as a colonel, lieutenant colonel, and major; a regimental staff including an adjutant, quartermaster, surgeon, surgeons mate, paymaster, and chaplain; and 8 to 10 companies. Cavalry and artillery regiments were organized in a similar way, although cavalry companies were frequently called troops. Artillery companies included specialized soldiers, such as bombardiers, gunners, and matrosses (gunners mates who helped load, fire, and sponge the guns). The soldiers in artillery units often functioned individually, or in small groups, rather than as regiments. Artificers were civilian or military mechanics and artisans employed by the Army to provide necessary services. Artificer companies included carpenters, blacksmiths, wheelwrights, harness makers, coopers, nailers, and farriers (blacksmiths who shoed horses). Compiled service records for soldiers whose names are incomplete due to the mutilation or deterioration of the original records are arranged at the end of the other compiled service records for their units. Records for soldiers and employees listed by first name only in the original records are filed under that name. There are cross-references for names that appear in the records under more than one spelling.

Ledgers of Payments, 1818-1872, to U.S. Pensioners under Acts of 1818 Through 1858, from Records of the Third Auditor of the Treasury.
This microfilm publication reproduces Treasury Department pension payment volumes that record semiannual payments for 1818 to 1871. The entries are arranged by the act of Congress under which payment was made and thereunder by name of pension agency. The pensioners names appear in rough alphabetical order by initial letter of surname. Each volume contains a record of payments made for a specific period. Succeeding payments are in the next volume. Each entry shows the name of the pensioner, the name of the veteran (if different), the name of the pension agency through which payment was made, and the quarter and year of the last payment to the pensioner. When an heir or a legal representative claimed an unpaid balance due the pensioner at the time of death, the date of death of the pensioner is given and the date of the final payment made to the family or heirs. Selected Records of the War Department Relating to Confederate Prisoners of War, 1861-1865.
This microfilm publication reproduces 427 bound volumes of records relating to Confederate prisoners of war confined by Federal authorities, 1861-65, with two of the volumes extending to 1866. The volumes consist mainly of registers and lists. There is a vast duplication of names of prisoners and information relating to them throughout the volumes. There are discrepancies in the spelling of names, information regarding military organizations, dates of capture, and other data. The volumes have no standard overall arrangement. Some volumes have page or folio numbers, but many pages are unnumbered. A few volumes contain name indexes. In the alphabetically arranged volumes there are no names under X; I, and J, and U and V are sometimes combined: Mc is generally combined with M; and some letters are missing. Various numbers indicating several prior numbering schemes appear in the volumes. In general, the significance of the number is obscure. For these reasons, and to prevent confusion in the citation of volume numbers, the volumes have been renumbered by the National Archives in a continuous series from 1 to 427.

Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers Who Served in Organizations Raised Directly by the Confederate Government.
This microfilm publication reproduces the compiled service records of Confederate soldiers who served in military organizations raised directly or otherwise formed by the Confederate Government and therefore not identified with any one State. Two or three of these organizations seem to have been originally considered units of the Confederate Regular Army. Several others were raised among residents of Indian Territory; one was made up of foreigners recruited among Union prisoners of war. Preceding the jacket-envelopes for the individual soldiers in such organizational unit, there are usually empty envelopes on which the officers of the unit are listed. Jacket-envelopes contain cards showing the exact captions of muster-in and muster-out rolls that were copied and the certifications of the mustering officers verifying the accuracy of the rolls. Record-of-events cards indicate the activities in which any part of the unit had been engaged. Because of the irregular way in which most of these units were organized, there are relatively few caption cards. Record-of-events cards are more numerous, but they sometimes do not contain any account of happenings because no such notation was made in the original records. The compiled service records reproduced in this microfilmed publication are indexed on M818.
