The Spanish Castanets Upon hearing the castanets call, the flamenco is generally thought of.

But this association of ideas is not exactly correct, for in the true flamenco the castanets are not played, since these bother the character of the flamenco singing and do not allow the characteristics spinning of the hands, giving the dance a different type of expression. On the other hand, in the folklore dances of the different Spanish regions, for example the jota, they are used. They also form part of the classical Spanish dance, a mix between flamenco and ballet, for those who use the music of composers like Isaac Albniz and Manuel de Falla, or of the bowling school?, a style of dance that developed en Madrid in the 18th century and is based in the technique of classical ballet. One can suppose that the castanets were one of the first musical instruments. Its origin is found in very distant times. Primitive forms of castanets were found not only in Spain, but on all continents, and they were pressed between the fingers, held with the palm of the hand or by a handle. However, since then, the castanets have also evolved. The left and rich castanets have a different sound. The right one, which has a higher sound, is called hembra, and the left, which has the lower sound, is called macho. There are castanets of different sizes, such as the gloves: the women usually use sizes 6 and 7, the men 8 and 9, and for the children they start from number 3. In Ibiza there are the Castanyolasses, large castanets, such as in the small plantations of the Canary Islands they are held with four fingers and make sounds by shaking the wrist. Musical Education The castanets are an ideal instrument for starting children in music. Music professors of different German cities, all throughout Colonia, have managed to incorporate the castanets in their classes. With this instrument, children can learn the fundamentals of music without having to worry about tuning the instruments; to develop manual ability and the rhythmic sense combining the touch of the castanets with easy steps, verses, and songs. Also in centers of special education, castanets have been applied with success. This instrument called the attention and helped increase discipline in class. Medical studies have verified that the independent movement of the fingers favors blood circulation in the brain. Therefore they say that people who play the piano lives longer. Still they have not started using the castanets in geriatrics, but given that its technique is like that of the piano, although easier, it will be worthwhile to take the initiative. In 1991, a group of music professors founded the International Organization of the Musical Castanets that today is made up of about 200 partners in nine European countries and in America. The association is dedicated to the encouragement and the spread of the interpretation of the castanets: as an independent musical instrument, in musical education and training, as an accompanying instrument for dance, in musical therapy and in the dramatic arts. The activities of the association are: the organization and carrying out of seminars and concerts; the publication of Posticeo, informative periodical with world news about castanets; the publication and dispatch of musical literature and didactic material, and the promotion of contacts and exchange of experience between members. impreso imprinted
