Electronic Stability Program

Overview The electronic stability program (ESP) is a further enhancement to the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and traction control system (TCS). The ESP is designed to detect a difference between the driver's control inputs and the actual response of the vehicle. When differences are detected, the system intervenes by providing braking forces to the appropriate wheels to correct the path of the vehicle. This automatic reaction is engineered for improved vehicle stability, particularly during severe cornering and on low-friction road surfaces, by helping to reduce over-steering and under-steering. To implement ESP functionality, additional sensors must be added to the ABS system. A steering wheel angle sensor is used to detect driver input with a yaw rate sensor and a low-g sensor that measure the vehicle response. Some ESP systems include a connection to the powertrain controller of the vehicle to enable reductions in engine torque when required. Key Benefits > Improves stability during severe cornering > Improves stability on lowfriction road surfaces > Helps to correct vehicle control errors by sensing incorrect lateral movement (or yaw) and by dynamically adjusting control to eliminate or reduce its impact > Provides overall control and monitoring of chassis systems > Capitalizes on the development of advanced braking systems, such as electromechanical braking systems (EMB) and electrohydraulic braking systems (EHB), to offer additional functionality

Design Challenges Electronic stability programs are based on existing ABS systems with the addition of several enhancements. The inclusion of analog electrohydraulic valves requires closed-loop, currentcontrolled pulse width modulation (PWM) outputs from the electronic control unit (ECU). The yaw and low-g sensors are typically located in a separate cluster near the vehicles center of gravity. Additional communication interfaces are required to enable data transfer to the powertrain ECU and sensor cluster.

An ESP system is required to operate as fail-safe during the event of a fault. The system relies on the electronic components to provide a high level of operational fault coverage to correctly initiate the fail-safe state. Freescale Semiconductor Solution An ESP system requires components such as a mid-performance MPC500 microcontroller for system control and SMARTMOS companion chips for functions such as load driving, sensor interfacing, voltage regulation, and system watchdog operation.

Freescale Semiconductor has extensive experience developing many of the specific aspects required for the implementation of an ESP system. With the previous development of fail-safe microcontrollers, braking-specific modules such as the wheel speed timer, and a software center that develops drivers, tools, and operating systems, Freescale Semiconductor has the knowledge to develop the right solutions in partnership with their customers.
