Proposal
Toshiba JSW Turbine and Generator Pvt Ltd is a joint venture between Toshiba Corporation and JSW Group to manufacture and market super-critical steam turbines and generators for thermal power plants in India. Toshiba has been supplying steam and gas turbines for its many customers around the world. Day and night, these turbines continue to provide safe, reliable and efficient source of electrical energy to the many nations they serve. Toshiba provides a vast range of turbine products from several megawatts back pressure turbines to over 1,000MW supercritical turbines. A coal based thermal power plant converts the chemical energy of the coal into electrical energy. This is achieved by raising the steam in the boilers, expanding it through the turbine and coupling the turbines to the generators which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. The energy efficiency of a conventional thermal power station is typically 40 %. In India, power sector companies are putting lot more emphasis on improving the cycle efficiency. The efficiency of electricity and heat production from conventional thermal power plants improved between 1990 and 2009 by 5.5 percentage points (from 35.4% in 1990 to 40.9% in 2009).The improvement was due to the closure of old inefficient plants, improvements in existing technologies, often combined with a switch from coal power plants to more efficient combined cycle gas-turbines. So in the present era, technology is changing day by day and now we are moving to the ultra-critical technology from super critical technology. India's power sector, which added 20,000 mw of capacity in last year, is a lucrative market for foreign firms. It is a very daunting task for the Toshiba to move up with the current market trends as they have stiff competition from the domestic and foreign players. As we all know that coal reserves are depleting and they are not going to last forever so there is utmost need of efficient technology. Through ultra-critical technology in future, we will be able to reduce the consumption of coal and due to this, environment emissions will be less. We intend to study the implementation of these technologies at Toshiba, and how the company has utilized these technologies to reach where it is today.

Key QuestionsThrough our mini project we would like to answer the following key questions about the above mentioned technologies implemented at Toshiba: 1) What was the scenario prior to implementing these technologies and how were these technologies implemented? 2) How Toshiba is managing to reduce costs for power producers, which are facing high costs, fuel scarcity and distribution bottlenecks? 3) How has it helped Toshiba to gain a competitive advantage? 4) What will be the future trends in Indian Power Sector? 5) Application of SWOT analysis and Porters 5 forces to determine the Toshibas current position in the market.
