LABORATORY MANUAL Subject: CE 47 Hydraulics Experiment #: 8a Experiment Title: Determination of Pump Efficiency Objectives: Apparatus: Pump with 2 pressure gauges [before and after the pump], Water tank, Meter Stick Theory for Calculations: Pumps always have the efficiency of less than 100%. Efficiency is the ratio of the actual power delivered by the pump to the pipe system and description plate attached to the pump. However, the power output as more important so that the lifting capacity of the pump could be determined. Energy head added by the pump to the system pipe can be derived from the Bernoullis equation provided Ha is the only unknown and the rest of the terms are given. The Bernoullis equation is:

then and

Output Power = Q W Ha

Procedure: 1. Open the main gate valve. 2. Switch on the pump. 3. Record the pressure gauge readings from pressure gauges before and after the pump. Designate the gauges as P1 and P2, respectively. 4. Measure the elevations of the pressure gauges before and after the pump. Designate the elevations as Z1 and Z2, respectively. 5. Determine the discharge. 6. Compute for the head added and the output power of the pump. 7. Compute also for the pump efficiency.
