The SAP for Utilities conference offers an opportunity where all presentations, personnel, vendor displays and all attendees are focused on the Utility business. I attended the premiere North America conference and was truly impressed - the size, quality of the presentations, the events smooth organisation and the excellent utility contacts and side conversations. It was one of the best conferences I have attended. I would recommend this conference to any utility professional that has some business systems orientation, from advanced metering to regulatory financial reporting.

Keynotes
Market Change - An Opportunity for Growth
Adaire Fox-Martin - Senior Vice President Industry Business Solutions & Phillip Vaughan - Director, Utilities, Asia Pacific Japan, SAP Asia Pte Ltd (Singapore)
Wednesday 7 November: 09.00 - 10.00 Utility services were traditionally provided by governments. They were considered basic and essential and beyond the resources of the private sector. However, governments are not seen as always efficient in the allocation of resources and Utilities have seen changes to market structures - this is being experienced within the Asia Pacific region currently. This takes many forms, corporatisation, privatisation, unbundling, amalgamation, competition and vertical integration. It is often viewed unfavourably by staffers as a threat to employment and the status quo, or simply unnecessarily expensive and unproductive. However, these changes can provide real opportunities for growth for both the Utility and their staff. Definition and trajectory of market restructuring Effects of market changes on individual organisations Organisational response and successful short-run strategies Case studies of different experiences

The Latest Scoop on the SAP for Utilities Roadmap

David Coldrey - Industry Director, Utilities, IBU, SAP Asia Pacific & Japan (Singapore)
Thursday 8 November: 09.00 - 10.00 This keynote presentation will focus on the SAP for Utilities roadmap as well as observations of the direction that the Utilities industry solution is heading in. It will also include the latest updates on mobility, managing different aspects of big data, an update on AMI and the Utilities specific RDS (Rapid Deployment Solutions).

Centrica: Leading the Way With Innovation

Stephen Brown - SAP Architecture Manager, Centrica plc. (UK)
Thursday 8 November: 15.20 - 16.20 Centrica likes to innovate, whether developing applications to get behind the meter, or pushing the boundaries to maximise the value of ever increasing data sets. However, to succeed in the energy business, you need lots of energy - the kind customers use to heat homes and run businesses and also the kind it takes to constantly innovate. On both counts, Centrica plc has it in abundance. Innovation is a continuous process within the Centrica Retail Business (British Gas), both to get behind the meter and to deliver smarter energy and information to customers. In order to create the sticky customer, Centrica are developing customer offerings, such as CRM loyalty programs and enabling customer information ondemand and on multi-device. In-Memory computing is also a hot topic right now and Centrica are undertaking pilot programmes around Smart Meter and Customer Data in order to rapidly understand energy usage behaviours and gain insight on customers. What operations are Centrica plc choosing to innovate in? Have they achieved the benefits they set out to achieve? What are some of the lessons learned on this innovation journey? Triumph Over the Human Spirit

Special Guest Speaker: Michael Groom
Wednesday 7 November: 16.40 - 17.40 In 1987, Michael Groom suffered a serious injury that almost prevented him from walking again. He was told to forget about an active outdoor life but by 1990 he had not only taught himself to walk again, he was back climbing in the Himalayas. In 1999 he achieved his lifelong goal of climbing the five highest mountains in the world. During many cold, lonely, pain-racked nights, he was tempted to give up. One thing got him through: sheer will. Michaels achievements would be remarkable enough for anybody. But he set himself the astounding extra challenge of doing it all without using bottled oxygen. He has been close to tragedy many times, including the disastrous 1996 Everest attempt in which nine climbers died. Michael was a guide on Rob Halls Everest team and of the six team members who reached the summit, only he and Into Thin Air author Jon Krakauer survived. Come listen to his story.

Pearls of Wisdom From a Highly Experienced CIO on Implementing SAP Systems - on Time and Within Budget
Chit Sieng Wong - Group Chief Information Officer, Singapore Power Limited (Singapore)
Wednesday 7 November: 10.00 - 11.00 One often hears of software implementation projects costing tens of millions, missing their target implementation dates and not meeting business requirements fully. Are all buyers of SAPs software doomed to this fate or is there something that can be done? Attend this presentation to hear insights based on years of experience around key project life-cycle practices that are essential for implementers of SAP software (or any other software) in order to ensure a successful implementation. This experience includes lessons learnt from eight SAP projects overseen in the past seven years. These include implementations of ERP, ISU, use of NetWeaver to develop portal based applications, asset management and Internet Portal. A focus will be to share with you the six key considerations that implementation teams should bear in mind: Project governance - setting yourself up for success Blueprinting of business requirements and processes - everyone should know where you are headed How to select and get the most out of the system integrator Testing and system acceptance Business user ownership and participation - getting buy-in from the outset Legacy data cleansing, migration and reconciliation SAP release: ECC 6 Original go-live date: December 1995

Smart Grid Challenges and Opportunities Lessons From the Smartest Utility in the United States
Chris Chen - Market Development Manager, San Diego Gas & Electric (USA)
Thursday 8 November: 10.00 - 11.00 San Diego Gas & Electric has been selected as the smartest utility in the United States for three years in a row by Intelligent Utility magazine for its first mover status in many areas of Smart Grid. The advent of Smart Grid technologies has created challenges by changing the role of the utility from a one-way distributor of electricity into a facilitator of a two-way, real-time energy marketplace. This presentation will discuss system impacts from the Smart Grid including, big data, billing scale and complexity, customer relationship management, asset management and smart meter data integration. It will also look at opportunities for new utility business models created by Smart Grid such as microgrids, demand response and home energy management. The ubiquity of SAP impacts from Smart Grid How Utility business models must adapt in a Smart Grid world Strategies for addressing billing and big data issues SAP release: ECC 6, EhP 5 & IS-U Original go-live date: March 1998

Track Presentations
TRACK A TRACK B
Keys to Successful Business Intelligence: Back to Basics
Francisco Castillo (Ph.D. & PMP) - CIO, Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (The Philippines) Over 60% of BI projects fail and even in projects where IT deems it a technical success, users and management may have a different opinion. This situation has not changed for years now, new tools have come, more powerful engines developed HANA - and yet we are in the same position we were 15 years ago in terms of success rates. Methodologies, as well as proven techniques to ensure users really get what they are asking for are crucial. While current technologies and integration with SAP have improved over time, working with external consultants helps to minimise risk through the use of experienced resources, however some functions still need to be well understood and cannot be outsourced. Understanding the typical gap between business and IT Issues typically encountered in a BI project Special technical considerations which affect the design of the data model, as well as ETL and front-end design Good project management practices for BI How process is important even in BI projects

Enterprise Asset Management With SAP - GIS Integration in a Power Distribution Utility
Arunabha Basu - Vice President & Head (Technology), Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (India) In a power distribution utility, assets are installed at various locations under geographical areas of service. SAP has evolved into a set of integrated applications which deliver the core functionality needed for enterprise asset management to industry-specific functionality in Utilities. The unique ability of GIS is to model complex spatial relationships including those of networks which are difficult to map in hierarchical SAP structures. At Tata Power (TPDDL), GIS has been integrated with SAP, where map-centric and spatial relationships trigger the creation of SAP Master Data through transactions supporting wideranging business processes for achievement of operational excellence and customer delight in terms of reliability of electricity supply. Integrated asset management workows Implementation challenges Focus on change management and key barriers to adoption Asset life-cycle management Key success factors (AT&C loss reduction, expenditure control and optimisation)

Putting Big Data to Work in the Utilities Industry for Maximum Business Impact
Peter Ainsley-Hartwell - CTO, Utopia, Inc. (USA) In the IT value chain, data is the foundation for enterprise knowledge. The sheer volume of data generated every day - 2.5 quintillion bytes - is only one of the defining attributes of big data. Velocity, variety, validity and complexity - these are some of its other dimensions. Utilities today not only have very large databases to manage, they also have a much greater volume and velocity - of real-time data feeds coming in from a variety of sources. Managed right, big data can give an enterprise unprecedented insight into all aspects of its business and make possible new revenue streams. One solution for managing big data is based on Hadoop, proven in companies such as Yahoo and Facebook. Come and see an example of the power of big data with the latest analytics and dont risk being submerged in the deluge of data that is already threatening to overwhelm the unprepared. Putting big data to work in delivering business value Analytics and BI solutions designed for big data play a crucial role in extracting actionable insights from a companys big data repository Breakthroughs in areas like In-Memory computing make possible blazingly fast, real-time analytics on big data SAP HANA and Hadoop solutions SAP for Utilities Asia Pacific Conference | 19

Tips and Tricks for a Successful AMI Pilot
David Coldrey - Industry Director, Utilities, IBU, SAP Asia Pacific & Japan (Singapore) Are you planning to conduct an AMI pilot project and being challenged to know what can be achieved? Some of the questions to be discussed in this presentation and which might shed some light for you are: Why conduct an AMI pilot? How to define the scope? What should you consider for a successful outcome? What are some of the new skills needed? What are some of the organisational considerations for your Utility?

TRACK C
Building BI Maturity Through Self-Service Report Development and SAP BusinessObjects 4.0
Cameron Vagg - BI Analytics Lead, AGL Energy Limited (Australia) As a leading Utility organisation AGL has made numerous investments in BI and has firm ambitions for a differentiating BI maturity. With a large SAP footprint the BusinessObjects toolset became a natural choice and the 4.0 release was installed in March 2012. A centralised Business Intelligence Competency Centre (BICC) had become a bottleneck for report requests and the historical lack of a strategic reporting tool meant vastly different BI practices existed throughout AGL. Clearly a different approach was required to meet information consumer needs and the organisational maturity objective. Self-service report development was identified as a key part of the solution. The challenge - building BI maturity Focus on empowering business users with the right tools, guidance and support The constraint - a bottleneck of report requests The response - build an improved hub and spoke model The tools - SAP BusinessObjects and business engagement The result - exibility with governance

Mobile Computing - Its More Than Just Mobility

David Peters - Principal Engineer Network Information, ElectraNet Pty Ltd (Australia) Mobile technology is no longer a barrier, the real problem is knowing what you want to achieve and more importantly how. See a case study of ElectraNets mobile inspection system which has taken several years to implement after much evolution and embedding. If you want to fail at mobile computing, treat it as an IT project with a defined scope, timeline and add it onto your existing systems. If you want to succeed, throw the book out and change everything from executive management expectations, business processes and SAP data structures, down to inspectors job descriptions. Mobile is not an IT technology project but a transformational change to business processes and must be driven by the business Minimise training by working with inspectors to design a purpose built and easy-to-use system Improve data quality and management from contractors Achieve consistent categorisation and prioritisation of asset condition to manage asset risk Use mobile data to build a regulatory case for capital and operating expenditure

Operating Efficiency Case Study - Consolidation of 8 Separate Billing Systems

Jongse Lee - IT Manager, SK E&S Co. Ltd. (Korea) SK E&S is a major Energy and Utility company which has eight different subsidiaries under its command. Each subsidiary had a separate billing system and its own operating function. Those billing systems were each developed in-house upon their request, so there were gaps between FI and the Billing module, requiring manual conversion and operation. In order to reduce the repeatedly incurred cost and remove the inefficiency in the related operation, SK E&S as a holding company made the decision of adopting the ERP including the IS-U through the solution research process. Forecasting for the Long-Term, Answers for The Short Term - How Ausgrid Achieved This in One Solution
Ajay Mehta - SAP Business Intelligence & Planning Project Manager, Ausgrid (Australia) The Utilities industry in Australia is one that is under a high degree of change, whether it be from industry reform, regulatory requirements or technological advances. Senior Management in Ausgrid required the ability to make informed strategic decisions based on operational data. These decisions have always been made, but the recently completed Regulatory Financial Scenario Planning Project enabled Ausgrid to make them in an enterprise system (SAP BPC), using integrated data, rather than disconnected Excel models. The capability this delivered for Ausgrid was being able to make better decisions, with more accurate data and to do it faster - the cycle time was reduced from months to weeks, allowing many iterations of scenario analysis to occur. What kind of business decisions can enterprise solutions support? Leveraging the existing investment in SAP, why and how? A new way of forecasting Aligning financial to regulatory views of the world Achieving organisational buy-in

Changing The Game on Usability in SAP
Jeff Woods - Head of Product Evangelism, SAP UK Ltd (UK) Many of the initial SAP applications were designed for a smaller audience than use them today. Users have new requirements for their interactions with SAP - casual users need access, mobile users need access anywhere and expert users want consumer grade experiences. SAP has undertaken a range of investments in initiatives across SAP with the intent of leading the market for applications in user experience - across the lifecycle of ownership: the SAP experience. This presentation will help you understand what SAP is delivering today on user experience, what the roadmap is, how to you navigate the options and how you can take action to get out in-front of the issue of usability inside your enterprise. What is the art of the possible in usability and how can you associate business value? What is SAP delivering today and what is the roadmap? How can you map the solutions that SAP is delivering and what does an Enterprise UX strategy look like?

Transformation: Information Silos to Information Integration A Successful Project Journey in an Extraordinary Environment
Sardar Naufil Mahmud - Chief Information Officer, Karachi Electric Supply Company (Pakistan) Information silos restrict the capabilities of the applications. Holistic information visibility to all the stakeholders in a Utility company is a huge concern. SAP provides an integrated Utility specific solution to address this concern. This presentation will cover a review of the transformation from an internally built legacy batch billing solution at Karachi Electric Supply Company to SAP IS-U (Industry Solution for Utilities). It will also highlight real-life lessons learnt during the course of the project while working in an extraordinary environment such as encountering labour strikes and foreign consultants leaving in the midst of the project due to security concerns resulting in total reliance on companys internal resources. Real-life examples emphasising the value of making an early change management plan in the project life-cycle will be shared. As a result of the successful project implementation, business challenges addressed resulted in increased bill accuracy and thus more satisfied customers. For the company, SAP IS-U is a one-stop solution that covers the entire back and front office processes and can be integrated with other applications such as SAP Customer Relationship Management, SAP Business Intelligence, GIS and SAP ERP applications.

Outage Detection and Customer Communication in a Smart Grid World

Robert (Bob) B. Frazier - Directory of Technology Houston Electric, CenterPoint Energy (USA) Traditionally utilities have learned about electric outages only when the customer called in to the organisation. This process was frustrating for the customer, who would often arrive home with no power, no warning and long queue times on hold on the telephone, when outages were wide spread. The Smart Grid has enabled CenterPoint to become aware of an outage without a customer calling in. Once CentrePoint have analysed and isolated the fault to a given location and equipment, in order to determine which customers are without power, they can now send out notifications to their customers with specific information about the problem. This has opened up a whole new level of improvement in customer satisfaction by proactively notifying the customer via numerous non-traditional methodologies - such as: text messages, GIS displays on the Internet, emails and social media. Come listen and share in the story of all they have done to date and what they have up their sleeves over the coming period to improve customer satisfaction.

Productivity Using SAP Enterprise Mobility With People and Culture at the Heart of Your Strategy
Bani Zainal Azmian - Senior VP, Corporate Services Division, Malakoff Corporation Berhad (Malaysia) Malakoff is a leading independent power producer in Malaysia and has used SAP as the ERP since 1998. Having established a premier position in the Malaysian domestic power generation sector, Malakoff is currently embarking on overseas expansion of its business. This exciting growth comes with some interesting challenges - creating a dynamic and connected workforce whilst remaining committed to their core values of a balanced work life. The IT department was empowered by the business to find a solution to some of the simplest approval difficulties to make them a reality. Identifying these pain points and removing the limitations provided great value to the business. After listening to the business and armed with a history of success, the team knew that implementing a mobile strategy would ensure a positive impact on individuals. The idea was to create mobility solutions that provided key individuals the exibility to conduct core business functions - such as procurement, travel authorisations, travel claims, benefit claims and leave approvals - from anywhere and everywhere. Defining what mobility means for Malakoff and their people Requirements of an enterprise mobility platform for the present and future The implementation journey: timelines, skills, people and partners Impact and benefits to the business after deployment of enterprise mobility Future opportunities

Using SAP Technologies to Provide Customers With Up-to-Date Information About Their Electricity Supply
Tara Rosenzweig - SAP Architect, ETSA Utilities (Australia) Even though they are a distribution company, ETSA Utilities has been working hard to provide relevant and up-to-date information directly to their customers. A number of recent initiatives have focused on providing their customers with easy access to information about their electricity supply. This presentation will discuss a couple of the initiatives, the first being a detailed look into their online booking system for registered electricians. This application is external facing and allows for electricians and solar installers to log-on and put in a request for ETSA Utilities to perform work, book an appointment for that work to be done and monitor the progress of their request. The second initiative is ETSA Utilities text messaging service to allow customers to register online to receive updates on the status of their power supply. This service is called Power at My Place and allows customers to register to receive an SMS when there is no power supply at a nominated address. A series of messages will inform the customer of estimated restoration times and also when the power has been restored. Introduction and overview of each initiative Architecture/design considerations for enabling corporate data to be made available to the public Security considerations/integration with ERP back-end User authorisations/profiles/roles in SAP ERP, NetWeaver Portal and MS Active Directory User process (how to obtain data from unauthenticated users) Connectivity with Click Schedule (for electricians booking application) Delivery methods of each application to both internal and external users

Workshop 1: How SAP Can Help Support the Entire Asset Life-Cycle
Led by: Len Harms - VP, Utilities and Energy, Vesta Partners (USA)

When it comes to Enterprise Asset Management in SAP most people think of the Plant Maintenance module. Although this is a functionally rich and well-proven solution it is only one module of the SAP solution suite that supports asset life-cycle management. This workshop will focus on how the SAP solution suite can support all aspects of the asset life-cycle from planning through to retirement. Following the asset life-cycle, a number of SAP solutions will be presented with a focus on how they are used in the business and how they can lend value to an organisation. The workshop will include live demonstrations, as well as customer examples of how the solutions are being used. Plan the asset with Project Portfolio Management and Project System Build the asset with compatible units and Linear Asset Management Operate the assets with Work Clearance Management Maintain the asset with Condition Based Maintenance Other discussion items will include an overview of available options and their applicability to specic versions of SAP. Key Lessons: Lesson 1: Learn about the other SAP solutions that support asset life-cycle Lesson 2: Learn how SAP support long-term planning Lesson 3: Learn the different ways that WCM can be implemented - there is a lite version Lesson 3: Learn how data from historians can be used to support CBM

Workshop 3: Integrating Field Data Collection, Data Migration, Archiving and RTDG Using SAP Data Services
Led by: Peter Aynsley-Hartwell - Chief Technology Officer & Herb Hadley - EAM Global Practice Lead & Director of Solutions Consulting, Utopia, Inc. (USA)
One of the rst problems faced by companies in the Utilities sector in getting their data right is that of eld data entry and verication, to provide a full asset status and inventory by functional location. The next steps in implementing an integrated, standardised SAP solution often are data migration, data archiving and decommissioning of legacy systems. The same data ows that are set-up using SAP Data Services for data migration can be used for archiving the data and also for Real-Time Data Governance of Material Master directly from ECC 6 MM01 transactions. Unstructured data is also easily integrated using SAP Data Services. This workshop will focus on 2 sections: 1. Solving the eld data collection problem 2. Achieving multiple objectives using SAP Data Services Data Flows It will include question and answer sessions, interactive discussions and a series of lectures. Also see live demos of how these multiple objectives can be achieved with ease by using hand-held based eld data collection and SAP Data Services data ows. Lesson 1: Implementation best practices, metrics and goals for a data migration, archiving and legacy decommissioning program. Lesson 2: Use of SAP Data Services data ows for achieving all of the above with relative ease and also managing unstructured data. Lesson 3: Use of hand-held based eld data collection and validation for improved asset valuation and utilisation.
