Too often, immigrants to the united statesmany who were doctors, lawyers, scientists, and engineers in their home countriesare met with the dismal prospect of minimum-wage jobs or unemployment. upwardly global, founded in 2000 by sF resident Jane Leu, takes aim at this waste of human potential with employment training and skill-level job placement. The six-month program costs $2,500 per student, but the value to upwardly Global pupils is priceless: Participants have been placed in educational roles at stanford university and uCsF and have found jobs at such Fortune 500 companies as Google, Wells Fargo, and Microsoft.

Since opening in 1984, this Tenderloin neighborhood organization has reached more than 70,000 at-risk teens and young adults in need of housing, nutrition, health care, education, and employment.

habitat for humanity, greater san francisco

Working to build affordable, permanent housing in SF, Marin, and the Peninsula, this Habitat for Humanity chapter plans to construct 400 new family homes by 2020. The orgs biggest benefactor is SF-based Wells Fargo which, in 2011, funded the half-million-dollar launch of the branchs revitalization efforts in Bayview.

An acronym meaning Women Organized to Make Abuse Nonexistent, WOMAN Inc. has served victims of domestic violence since 1978. The nonprofit runs a 24-hour crisis hotline and offers emergency supplies (food, clothing, taxi and BART fare), as well as support groups and therapy.

rocket dog rescue

All of the proceeds at this volunteer-run organization are put toward saving dogs from over-crowded shelters and placing them in loving homes. Over the past 10 years, Rocket Dog Rescue has saved more than 6,000 animal lives.
