SPECIAL INSPECTIONS FOR ENGINES OPERATED IN VOLCANIC ASH

1. As a result of recent volcanic eruptions in various locations throughout the world, the following recommendations for special engine inspections and maintenance actions are to be preformed as follows: A. If possible, avoid flying in or near the volcanic cloud. However, if flight schedules require operation in or near the cloud, the following actions should be taken: (1) On applicable engines the decel check should be performed following each flight. Any deterioration in the decel time requires the actions stated in paragraph B--(8) or --(9) to be performed. (2) PARKING -- If the aircraft is parked in areas where ash fallout has occurred, it is preferred that the aircraft be stored inside. However, in all cases, the engine inlet and exhaust should be protected with suitable protective covers to prevent the volcanic ash from entering the engine. If ash fallout is found on the airframe, it should be removed to prevent the ash from entering the engine. A compressor wash in accordance with the applicable Operation and Maintenance Manual must be completed prior to the next flight. (3) FLIGHT NEAR THE CLOUD -- If the aircraft is flown near, but not in, the volcanic ash cloud, the special inspections and maintenance actions listed in Item B should be complied with each twenty--five (25) hours. Additionally, the compressor should be washed using the Rolls--Royce approved method and cleaning compound on a daily basis, after the last flight of the day. (4) FLIGHT IN THE CLOUD -- If the aircraft is flown in the volcanic ash cloud, the special inspections listed in Item B should be complied with following each flight. (5) HOVERING FLIGHT -- If the aircraft is hovered in areas where volcanic ash fallout has occurred, the special inspections listed in Item B should be complied with following each flight. B. Detailed instructions to accomplish the following special inspections and maintenance action are provided in the appropriate Operations and Maintenance Manual: (1) Wash the compressor and external engine components using an approved solution, reference the applicable Operation and Maintenance Manual for instructions. (2) Flush the engine oil system. (3) Clean or replace the engine oil filter.

(4) Clean or replace the Pc air filter. (5) For aircraft equipped with bleed valves: (a) OPERATORS OF SERIES I AND II ENGINES 1 1 Clean the bleed valve air system and poppet seat area of ash deposits. On applicable engines, clean the bleed valve air system and poppet seat area of ash deposits. (b) OPERATORS OF SERIES III AND IV ENGINES

(6) Perform compressor erosion inspection. (7) Replace the engine low pressure fuel filter. (8) For aircraft equipped with the Honeywell (Bendix) fuel system: (a) OPERATORS OF SERIES I AND II ENGINES 1 Any signs of deterioration in the decel time is cause for fuel control removal/replacement. Any signs of deterioration in the fuel control operation is cause for removal/replacement.

(b) OPERATORS OF SERIES III AND IV ENGINES 1

(c) During all compressor washes the Pc line should be disconnected and reconnected for drying as defined in the appropriate Operation and Maintenance Manual. (d) If contamination of the fuel control system is suspected, the fuel control and/or governor should be removed/replaced. (9) For aircraft equipped with the Goodrich (CECO) fuel system: (a) Clean or replace the high pressure fuel filter. If contaminants are found in the fuel control inlet filter, flush the fuel control. C. The volcanic ash is highly abrasive and corrosive to engine components. When operating in the volcanic ash cloud or when hovering in ash covered areas, a rapid deterioration of power can result from compressor erosion or systems contamination. The pilot should closely monitor the engine instruments for signs of malfunctions or power deterioration and take appropriate action. Engine malfunctions or power degradation should be thoroughly investigated in accordance with the applicable Operation and Maintenance Manuals. NOTE: Higher instances of turbine sulfidation will also be encountered as a result of operation near volcanoes, whenever possible the aircraft should be operated up wind of the site.
