Already into the fourth week of term 1 and I have to say this has been a most enjoyable and productive start to a school year. The staff thank each and every one of you for ensuring your children were well and truly prepared for school, all the necessary equipment and in complete school uniform, this has in no small measure contributed to the excellent start. The numbers have settled and the organisation of classes will remain, we have been very fortunate in that there has been minimal changes to class lists. Please keep in mind that at times due to unforeseen circumstances we do have the need to reorganise class configurations. This year is the first year that Pre Primary has become compulsory, this means Pre Primary students must be enrolled and attend five days per week. If your child is absent from school it is a requirement that a note is provided explaining the absence, this can be phoned through or sent via text message or given verbally to the teacher. Student attendance needs to be a minimum of 90%, below this percentage and the attendance will be flagged and investigated. Each newsletter we will include the percentage attendance for each year level PP Year 7 and the overall attendance. The year group with the highest attendance will be identified on an Attendance Honour Poster placed on the door of the front entry to the school. So, Congratulations Year 3, for Weeks 1 and 2 you are on an awesome 98%. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Student Councillors for the wonderful way they have performed their duties, the leadership they have provided and for being such excellent role models for all students in the school. A number of class teachers have already held their parent information session. These meetings are a perfect opportunity to find out how the class will operate, the expectations in regards to behaviour and homework and any events that may arise during the year. Many of the meetings have been well attended and we thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to attend; research clearly shows that when the school works in partnership with families students achieve better outcomes in all respects. When the Governor of West Australia Mr McCusker and his wife Mrs McCusker were in Albany two weeks ago they visited our school. Accompanying them was Young Australian of the Year Adram Azimi. This was a real treat for our students, the Governor and his wife spoke to a group of students about their program Kids Who Give WA. This is a program that encourages and nurtures the social conscience of young people, and celebrates and rewards outstanding acts of care, kindness and giving by young West Australians. Research shows that people who care about others are happier and more accepted in their community. The aim of the program is to teach children the importance of giving back. If you are interested in the Kids Who Give WA program go to the interactive www.kidswhogivewa.com.au website for more detailed information. Further in this newsletter is a scanned copy of an article in the West Australian last week. It is the 30th Year for the Jump Rope for Heart, in the article there is mention of Mount Lockyer Primary School. The photos are of students that were in the original Lockyer Leapers Skipping Squad, Dougie Roberts (pictured doing the push-ups) Kathy Pomery who is now Kath Hart and is quoted in the article, Arlia Sluiter and unfortunately I am not sure who the others are. The photos are taken at our school during the jump off which we do annually to raise money for the Heart Foundation. This Thursday the assembly will be hosted by the Student Councillors and entertainment will be provided by the School Choir. Look forward to seeing you there. Maxine Augustson Principal

Chaplains Chat Hello every one. I was asked this week some questions about who I am and what my role is here. So I thought it was a good time to reintroduce myself to everyone new and old. My real name is Greg Barber. Everyone at school knows me as Chappie. I have a diploma in Childrens services and have worked as a qualified Child Carer and worked in family support with YMCA here in Albany for many years. This is my third year here at Mt Lockyer and its been a great experience getting to know everyone. I have been married to the beautiful Eleanor for 17yrs now and we have two wonderful children Katja 15, and Quinn 11. My main role here as the school Chaplain is to be a part of the schools student and family support program. Children cannot learn to their full potential if they are worried or stressed over day-to-day things happening in their lives. This may be a friend thats not talking to them, a change in routine, or an argument they may have had at home. Perhaps something they have seen on TV has stuck in their minds and is worrying them. We can be constantly surprised as parents at what makes a child anxious. Dropping off a child in this state for six hours of school can be worrying for the parents as well. Having someone that can take a personal interest in them and watch over them for you is very reassuring. As I am not a teacher, my place in the school system is unique and very flexible. This enables me to be able to meet the different needs of parents and children from pre primary to yr 7. I spend my day interacting with students either one on one or in groups all throughout the day. You may see me on the basketball court, on the oval, at sports carnivals or on the roof collecting lost balls. Often Im just sitting in the sand pit enjoying a lively conversation with a beautiful smiling child and my day is fulfilled. So if you have any concerns regarding your child or something personal that I may be able to help you with, even if it has nothing to do with the school, please feel free to stop me in the halls or contact me through the office. I am available Monday to Thursday during school hours. I will be talking more about families, children and chaplaincy in further newsletters so keep a look out. The chaplains services are always respectful, private and confidential. Cheers Chappie

A few helpful tips: If your child is unfortunate enough to develop a vomiting and/or diarrhoeal illness please do not allow them to return to school until 24 hours after the last episode of vomiting/diarrhoea. Students with chicken pox must be excluded from school for at least 5 days after the rash has appeared and until the vesicles have formed crusts. (Crusts alone do not warrant exclusion). Conjunctivitis (eye infection): After commencement of antibiotic eye drops from the GP, exclude from school/work until discharge form the eyes has ceased. Head lice: exclude until day after shampoo treatment to kill eggs and lice. If you are not sure about when your child should return to school please contact the school nurse. Physical Education The aim of the P.E. program is to provide an introduction to, and development of, a variety of skills through games and activities. As well as the physical skills, the program will foster concepts such as co-operation, sportsmanship and game strategies, as well as promoting the importance of developing a healthy, active lifestyle. As with all other school subjects, all children are expected to participate in Phys. Ed. Lessons. A student will only be excused from participating if they hand in a note from their parent with a valid reason for not being able to participate, or the parent has spoken to either the class or Phys. Ed. Teacher. Because of the nature of Physical Education, children need to be dressed in suitable clothing for P.E. lessons. School uniform is acceptable, however dresses are often not appropriate. It is important that children wear suitable footwear on P.E. days. Sandals, thongs, shoes with slippery soles or heavy boots can cause safety concerns. Please refer to your childs class for the days when they have Phys. Ed. . Already this term a number of children have had footwear that has not been appropriate for P.E. activities. Drink bottles containing water will be permitted to be brought out to P.E. Hats must be worn during Terms 1 and 4, but are recommended all year. From time to time Regional Development Officers will be a part of the program bringing to the school their particular skills and expertise. Because of the nature of some activities it is very important that children follow instructions given to them and in particular any safety procedures given during lessons. Failure to follow these may result in a child being excluded from an activity. If a child was excluded for an extended period of time, parents would be notified. The school Behaviour Management Plan applies to Phys. Ed., the same as in classrooms. If you have any concerns regarding Physical Education please contact Mr Beatty or Mrs Mills, depending on which teacher your child has for Phys. Ed.

Locals Needed As Volunteer Mentors for the 2013 School Year The School Volunteer Program is calling for community members willing to become mentors at one of 13 registered schools in the Great Southern Region. Volunteer mentors are dedicated men and women who provide friendship, guidance and support to students who need a little help to negotiate some of lifes challenges. Patience, empathy & life experience are the only requirements to be a successful mentor. Volunteers will assist young students on a one-to-one basis, visiting their allocated school once a week, for one hour, spending quality time providing encouragement and taking a sincere interest in the students efforts. Access to a mentor can give a student an opportunity to increase their chances to look forward to a positive future. If you would like to become a volunteer mentor or for further information, please contact Christine Tozer on 0439 444 159 or visit www.svp.org.au

MANAGING STUDENT BEHAVIOUR

The key to this approach is that the child is given a choice at each step to follow directions or face increased consequences. Students making GOOD CHOICES are acknowledged for their efforts. For students making POOR CHOICES the following consequences apply ~
STEP 1 Student refuses to follow directions. Verbal warning. STEP 2 Student still refuses to follow directionsIn-class consequence eg Time Out area. STEP 3 Student still refuses to follow directionsOut-of-class consequence eg Buddy Class. STEP 4 Student still refuses to follow directionsRED CARD is sent to the office. Parents will be requested to attend school. SUSPENSION Students will be immediately suspended for verbal abuse of staff and/or violence towards staff or students.

WHAT IS BULLYING? Bullying is when a student or group keep picking on another student. They try to hurt them physically or emotionally. The behaviour is deliberate and repeated. A fight or disagreement between equal students is not bullying. HOW TO STOP BULLYING Tell an adult, it is not dobbing to ask for help. Both victim and those bullying will be counselled and supported. Do not be a by-stander; if you witness bullying try to stop it or report it. IF YOU ARE BULLYING Step 1: Warning Step 2: In school isolation and counselling at recess and lunch, parents will be notified Step 3: For continued breaches students will be suspended.

RE-ENTRY FOLLOWING SUSPENSION Students returning from suspension must be accompanied by an adult and will attend the Intervention Centre (Room 20) where an Individual Behaviour Management Plan will be developed and implemented.
