MARKET MEMORIES:
I was raised here in South Jersey and my parents always shopped in the Berlin Auction for everything. I really do not remember going to the Mall so much to go shopping for clothes or even things for the house and our pet supplies.

The market has been home to hundreds of young entrepreneurs in pursuit of the American Dream, and that is just on the inside! As we enter 2013 we reflect on our long history and look ahead toward another fifty years of service to our community. When I got married I moved to North Jersey because that is where my husbands business was. Every time I needed to go shopping the only place I could go shopping was the Mall. I would have a heart attack every time I would get done shopping because I know I could get the exactly the same things for so much cheaper if only I had the Auction near me. I would tell all my friends in North Jersey that they just do not know what they are missing. When I moved back to South Jersey the first time I needed something for our new house I ran right to the Berlin Auction. My husband Jeff now knows what I have been talking about all these years. Just the other day he called me and asked me to go pick something up he needed for work he said Can you go to the Auction for me and pick up a pair of work gloves. I remember having such a good time with my family at the Berlin Mart as a child, teenager and an adult. I live in Pennsylvania now, but when I come home to visit my friends and I would go there for hours. My uncle loves walking the flea market looking for car parts. My fondest memory I have of the Mart is visiting the Golden Touch Pretzel factory. We would stop as kids and we were always fascinated by how they made the pretzels. My aunt and uncle would buy a whole bag full of fresh warm pretzels, We would eat them for days! I love strolling outside looking through everything, just a great family place. I hope you stay open for many more years. I may live in another state now but I will always be a Jersey girl. Ginger Muse 1/17/2013

Ingredients for Herb Oil: -1/4 Cup Salt Free Seasonings from Spices & Stuff -2 Tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil -Kosher Salt & Freshly Ground Pepper Ingredients for Surf & Turf: -6 jumbo shrimp, peeled and deveined -2 tablespoons Extra-Virgin Olive Oil -Juice of Lemon -2 Teaspoons chopped fresh Thyme, plus 2 to 3 sprigs -Freshly Ground Pepper & Sea Salt -6 slices Pancetta (about 2 ounces) -1 12-ounce piece Beef Tenderloin, trimmed -8 Asparagus Spears -1 Tablespoon of Butter Heat a medium ovenproof skillet over high heat and add the butter. When the foam subsides, sear the beef until golden brown. Using tongs, hold the meat and brown the sides. Transfer the skillet to the broiler and cook until a thermometer inserted into the beef desired temperature of doneness. See chart to left. Transfer to a cutting board to rest while you cook the shrimp. Broil the shrimp until the pancetta is crisp, about 2 minutes per side. Meanwhile, microwave the asparagus until tender, about 2 minutes. Slice the beef into 4 pieces. Serve with the shrimp, herb oil and asparagus. Dig In! All spice and herbs can be purchased at Spices & Stuff Prepare the surf and turf: Toss the shrimp, olive oil, lemon juice, chopped thyme, and pepper to taste in a bowl. Wrap each shrimp with a piece of panchetta. Preheat the broiler. Arrange the shrimp on a foil-lined broiler pan. Season the beef with sea salt and pepper, press the thyme sprigs into the meat and set aside. Snap off the tough ends of the asparagus. Put the asparagus in a microwave-safe dish with 1/4 cup water and a pinch of sea salt. Make the herb oil: Pulse the salt free seasonings and olive oil in a food processor until smooth. Thin with water, if necessary, and add 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Transfer to a small bowl, cover and set aside. (This can be done up to 2 hours ahead.) Refrigerate if not using right away.

A VALENTINES DAY LOVE

How Yhannes House of Cheesecake Began: By Tiffany Battle Yhanne and I (owners & operators) attended and graduated from Edgewood High School in 1992. We first ran into each other in November 2005 it was truly Love at First Sight. Throughout our relationship, we ate at many restaurants. One, in particular, had a delicious cheesecake that we enjoyed very much. Yhanne said, I can do this! Some time goes by and Yhanne is ready to make me his wife (of course I didnt know that at the time). He created a very romantic candlelight dinner and cheesecake for dessert. I took one bite of the cheesecake and asked Yhanne, Where did you get this from? Yhanne explained that he baked the cheesecake himself. I did not believe himthe cheesecake was so moist and creamy! I demanded he prove that he was the creator of the best cheesecake I had ever eaten. Needless to say the second and third cheesecakes were even better than the first. Over the next couple of years I encouraged Yhanne to put his cheesecake on the market. Oh yeah! He said yes to the cheesecakes and I said yes to marrying him!!
