ouk de la Rive Box (1942, Louk Box in publications) received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1966 at Pomona College,

Claremont, California. Appointed a Faculty Fellow at Columbia University, New York, he entered that same year the doctoral programme in sociology. With the support of Columbia University and a travel grant from the Ford Foundation he did doctoral research in Brazil, completed in 1972. His study concentrated on the introduction of new technologies in the Brazilian educational system, including radio and television. After an appointment at California State University Hayward, he returned to The Netherlands to be part of a planning team for the restructuring of Dutch Higher education. This in turn led to an appointment at Nijmegen University as a director of planning, and in addition as a lecturer in the sociology of education. At Wageningen Agricultural University he subsequently joined the Department of Agrarian Sociology of the Tropics and Sub-tropics and did for ten years studies in the organisation of agricultural research. Among other projects he directed the Adaptive Agricultural Research Programme in the Dominican Republic and the Atlantic Zone Research Programme in Costa Rica. He analysed the roles of different stakeholders in technology development, focussing on contributions of experimenting cultivators to emerging knowledge networks. In this position was co-founder of the Management of Agricultural Knowledge Systems MA programme. In 1989 he was seconded from Wageningen to the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs as its Director of development policy planning. In this position he was a member of the Advisory Council for the Scientific Study of Development Cooperation and contributed to the formulation of policies favouring science and technology development. He continued to publish, focussing on the study of development policies. He became director of the European Centre for Development Policies in Maastricht in 1993. In this post he stimulated research programmes on the study of international co-operation. He was Vice President of the Special Programme for African Agricultural Research and coordinated a Food Security Programme for West Africa. Louk Box was professor of geography at Utrecht University (1998-2001) and is currently professor of international co-operation at Maastricht University (2000- ). He lectures at the UN University (Tokyo 2001,2002) and at different Dutch universities on topics related to international cooperation, particularly as relating to Science and Technology Development (STD). He lectures and supervises students in the European Society, Science and Technology Masters programme and developed its specialisation Bridging the Technology Divide (2002). At Maastricht University he coordinates studies on the development of methodologies to assess STD Policy dialogues in a number of poor countries and is involved in a study on demand led research. He is President of the European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI) and of the European University Association for the study of Society, Science and Technology (ESST). He was elected in 2004 to the Executive Board of the Prime European Network of Excellence, dealing with science and technology policies in the European Research Area. He is member of the Consultative Committee of the Geneva based Institut dtudes universitaires du dveloppement (IEUD). He was member of the Netherlands Commission on Biotechnology and Food Safety, and treasurer of the Prince Claus Fund for Culture and Development. He currently chairs the board of the Cultural Emergency Response, a joint venture of the Prince Claus Fund and Blue Shield International. In addition he presides the boards of the Netherlands United Nations Association NVVN and of OneWorld Netherlands, an internet platform for Dutch civil society organisations. He is trustee of SciDev.net, an internet venture started by the journals Nature and Science. In 2003 he was elected to the Executive Board of Enda Tiers Monde,

one of the oldest international civil society organisations dealing with environment and development action.
