Description
General
A base transceiver station (BTS) is by GSM definition the base station equipment needed to support a cell. This implementation of the BTS functionality is named a TG. However, a TG can support a part of a cell, a cell or up to 16 cells. A TG in the logical model G12 of the BTS consists of a set of managed objects and is in itself a managed object. A managed object is a logical representation of one or more hardware units and their software at a base station site. All operation and maintenance related communication on the Abis interface is directed to managed objects. A TG consists of up to 16 TRXCs, up to 16 RXs, up to 16 TXs, up to 128 TSs, up to 4 DPs and 1 CF, CON, IS and TF. The CF stores the s/w for itself, IS, CON, DP and TF within one TG. The TRXC stores the s/w files for itself and its dedicated RX, TX and TS. One RX, TX and up to eight TSs are hardwired to a TRXC. All traffic related communication on the Abis interface is addressed to a transceiver and is terminated in the TRXC. How to set the SAE number of individuals is described in document "Setting of Size Alteration Events in BSC/TRC" no. 105/190 46-FAD 104 06, included in this DT-Infomodel. Two methods are described but we recommend that the Fixed SAE method is used.

2.2

Addressing of Managed Objects

The basis for addressing managed objects is the TG, which has an instance number as index. The CFs, CONs, ISs and TFs are addressed by the same instance number as their TG. The DPs are addressed by using the same instance number as their TG and a local index within the transceiver group.

The TRXCs, RXs and TXs are addressed by using the same instance number as their TG and a local index within the transceiver group. The TRXC and its dedicated RX and TX are related by using the identical local indices. The TSs are addressed by the same instance number as the TG, a local index for the transceiver controller (within the TG) and a local index within the TRXC. The addressing scheme is shown in table 1. Table 1 MO TG CF CON IS TF DP TRXC RX TX TS Note Addressing of managed objects MO class Transceiver Group Central Function LAPD Concentrator Interworking Switch Timing Function Digital Path Transceiver Controller Receiver Transmitter Time Slot MO type RXOTG RXOCF RXOCON RXOIS RXOTF RXODP RXOTRX RXORX RXOTX RXOTS Addressing Limits 0 <= tg <= 511 0 <= tg <= 511 0 <= tg <= 511 0 <= tg <= 511 0 <= tg <= 511 0 <= dp <= 3 0 <= trxc <= 15 0 <= trxc <= 15 0 <= trxc <= 15 0 <= ts <= 7

The RBS 2000 models are restricted in the number of TRXC which they are able to support. The maximum number of TRXC is 12, that means addressing between 0 and 11 is possible.

Hardware
DXU Versions
DXUs of different versions and capacities are available. DXU-01 and -11 provide system interface towards 2 transmission ports (E1). DXU-03 and -11 provide system interface towards 2 transmission ports (T1). The high capacity DXU-21 offers 4 such transmission ports (E1/T1). Installations with DXU-21 in RBS 2202/2102 offer support of EGPRS/CS3/4 capable sTRU. DXU-21 is standard equipment in the high capacity RBS 2206/2106 and supports up to 6 dTRU in any combination. Data Transcript handling of DXU-21 differs from other DXU types due to a revised DCP numbering in order to handle the additional transmission ports.

2.3.2

DXU - Distribution Switch Unit functions

CF Central Function, is the control part of a TG. It is a SW function, handling common control functions within a TG. The BSC communicates with the CF using layer 2 LAPD, and is addressed by its TEI = 62. CON IS LAPD Concentrator, is used by the optional feature LAPD Concentration for RBS 2000. Interworking Switch, provides a system interface to the 2 Mbit/s link and cross connects individual time slots to certain transceivers. Timing Function, extracts synchronization information from the PCM link and generates a timing reference for the RBS. Digital Path, Layer 1 reception and transmission are not part of the BTS logical model. However, each of the PCM systems terminating in TG has an associated supervision object, the DP. Reports on transmission faults and supervision of transmission quality are carried over the Abis O&M interface. That signalling is described using managed object DP. A DP instance contains all parameter settings, counters to monitor the PCM link. It also performs procedures to report detected alarm conditions and quality values to the BSC.

TF DP

2.3.3

TRU Versions
To differentiate between normal TRUs and EGPRS/CS3/4 capable TRUs the denomination classic TRU will representent a TRU without EGPRS/CS3/4 capacity. New and existing RBS2101, RBS 2102 and 2202 can be equipped with a new and backward compatible EDGE sTRU supporting EGPRS/CS3/4. RBS2206/2106 are equipped with up to 6 EDGE dTRUs supporting EGPRS/CS3/4 providing a capacity of 12 transceivers in a single cabinet. Note that sTRU and dTRU can be configured as classic TRUs.

2.3.4

TRU - Transceiver Unit functions

TRXC The transceiver controller is controlling all the functions for Signal processing, Radio receiving and Radio Transmitting. Each TRX corresponds to one TRU unit. The BSC currently supports a maximum of 1020 TRXs.

Depending of the CDU type and/or the TRU configuration, the number of TRUs connected to the CDU differs and therefor the numbering of TEI and TRXs differs. Example of TRUs connected to CDU type A is shown in figure 1 . The TEI numbering, when TRUs are connected to CDU type C, is shown in table 2 . RX TX The receiver is an application object. It provides the radio frequency reception functionality for one transceiver. The transmitter is an application object. It provides the radio frequency transmission functionality on a time slot basis for eight TSs using different time slot numbers.

Combiners
Combining and Distribution Unit (CDU) combines transmitted signals from different transceivers and distributes received signals to all transceivers. The CDU contains duplex filter to be able to transmit and receive signals on the same antenna. There exists 4 different CDU types: CDU-A: Without any combiners at all (to avoid the combining loss) maximum 2 TRU/Cell. To be treated as a hybrid combiner when defining the TG. CDU-C: With hybrid combiners - maximum 6 TRU/Cell. CDU-C+: With hybrid combiners - maximum 6 TRU/Cell. CDU-D: With filter combiners to support large configurations - maximum 12 TRU/Cell. CDU-G: Combining and distribution unit intended for combining up to 2 dTRUs. To be treated as a hybrid combiner when defining the TG.

3.4

Semipermanent Connections Through IS

The BSC is connected to the BTS over semipermanently connected RBLT devices from the Abis interface through the IS to the TRUs. To make the required definitions in data transcript for this certain information needs to be known: 1 2 3 Mapping of Digital Connection Points (DCPs) for concerned DXU type (RXMOI) Which RBLT devices are to be connected to a particular TG (RXAPI) Is EGPRS/CS3/4 to be supported by a particular TG (RXMOI & RXAPI)

The DCP values for the TRUs, the Abis paths and the LAPD concentrator are predertermined by their fixed connections to the IS and vary between DXU versions. As can be seen in paragraphs 3.4.1 and 3.4.2 below DCP values per TRU will also be dependent on whether EGPRS/CS3/4 capable TRUs are to be introduced or not.
