MGMT-706: Cyber Law, Policy and Ethics

Course Description:
This course is an introduction to the use of internet and its interaction with legal and moral issues. Issues of privacy, pornography, child safety, intellectual rights, fraud, criminal activity, identity theft, and both U.S. and international legal regulations are a few of the topics to be covered. The course does not hope to cover the entire spectrum of pertinent areas, but to highlight the important ones. There are no prerequisites, but some internet experience is required and the use of Blackboard is necessary to access the course. There are two team presentations required in this class. Please prepare to have four other students join you in your presentation group.

Course Objectives:
The objectives of the course are three folds: 1) To define precisely how the internet is affected by regulation of U.S. and foreign laws. Privacy, criminal activity, file sharing are a few of the areas to be reviewed. 2) To research and understand the use of the internet is being affected by the introduction of new laws and how these laws are enforced. 3) To review approaches to how policies can be implemented that would be both legally and ethically sound in the internet age.

Systems Hardware Requirements:

1) Power PC:: Pentium Core 2 Duo or higher with minimum 1 GB RAM, 100GB Hard-disk, and a CD-ROM drive. 2) Storage: 4 GB flash drive. Have extra for backups. Flash drives preferred. 3) Networking: Must be able to access the internet, since students are requested to download files, use Blackboard on a regular basis and are required to communicate via E-mail and URLs.

Teaching Method:
Blackboard is combined with extensive reading assignments. There will be one midterm exam and a final semester exam. Assignments are handed out whenever deemed necessary. Changes to the schedule will be announced well in advance ON-LINE. Following are some of the common excuses I have gleaned from my students over the years: 1) My relative suddenly became sick last weekend 2) My girl/boyfriend talked me into this mess 3) The subway had a flat on my way to class 4) Could I have an extension? 5) I need this course to graduate! Attendance is always mandatory. You must stay current in your readings, assignments, and exam preparation, isolated absences will not, hopefully, have adverse effects on your performance. You are solely responsible, however, for making up for your deficiencies due to absence. However, if you miss your deliverables, it may force your withdrawal from class. Examples include missing an exam and/or presentation without sufficient justification(s) in advance. Further, three late assignments would be considered as your dropping the course. All course announcements, assignments, and statistics will be secured at one website,

Thus, each student is asked to log in to the site at least twice a week to stay current in the course. The login password is your NYIT SSO id that was distributed during the first day of your registration. You must be registered for the course to be allowed entry to the website. Please exchange contacts with your colleagues. Please do not call to notify me of your absence, unless it is an emergency. Your absence will be so obvious. Misplanning on your part does not necessarily constitute emergency on my part.

How this graduate on campus /online class works:

There two discussion threads on Blackboard. One discussion thread will require every student to enter about 100 words (I'm not going to count each word, but you should, and you will realize when your response is too short!) on the weekly topic. Everyone's response is due by next Wednesday (midnight) and it must be submitted on the discussion thread. HINT: Please create your response in Word or in a text file (SPELL Check and Grammar check, please) and then cut and paste it into the response box. If you don't have the books in time, its up to you to research the question online, borrow someone else's book, do something!, etc. Beginning Thursday morning (Midnight), please start reading everyone else's response online. Using the second discussion thread, and referencing at least three other classmates posts (by direct mention of their name and thoughts), explain how you agree or disagree with your classmates' point of views. Again I expect 100 words or more and posted by Sunday midnight. HINT: Write the response in Word or text file and then post online by cut and paste. 2nd HINT: If you have difficulty in picking which student responses to review, please do this! Describe the two best topic postings (other than your own!). Explain why their postings were good (effective, clear, short, concise in detail, controversial, etc.) YOU DO NOT HAVE TO AGREE with their posting, but if it made you THINK, it is worthy to mention. Also choose one posting that could use improvement. IT DOES NOT NEED TO BE TERRIBLE, but you THINK it could have been (more effective, clearer, longer, used more detail, was just plain ordinary cut and paste, etc.) Identify (by name) the two postings that you like

(maybe they were ALMOST as good as yours) and why. Then Identify (by name) one posting that could be improved (EVERYONE's could be improved but this one may need more help) and why. What's important here is helping your classmates learn when they do well and when they could do better. The Final and Mid-term Examinations are online: This examination is in essay reply format, not short answer. Please use complete sentences, paragraphs, correct grammar and spelling in preparing your answers. Points will be deducted for failure to provide effective answers. You will be allowed 3 hours to complete 6 essay questions out of 6 possible topics. WARNING, once you begin the examination online, you must complete the examination within 3 hours. Make sure you have 3 hours of uninterruptible time for online access. It is best to take the examination on campus if possible or use DSL or cable connection. Once you reach the time limit or you drop your online connection, you will be exited from the examination and WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO RE-ENTER. DO NOT E-MAIL ME for a do-over. So be careful in taking the examination. It is open book and open web. Grammar and spelling count so use MS Word or OPEN OFFICE to edit your response.
