Gre e t i n g s f ro m the Mayor of Oakdale

Oakdale Veterans Memorial Secures City Loan
Plans for an Oakdale Veterans Memorial outside of City Hall have been gestating for years. State Sen. Chuck Wiger proposed funding for the project in the state Legislature's spring session in 2012, but there was not enough support to fund the memorial. Frustrated but not beaten, the Oakdale Veterans Memorial Committee did not give up. In June 2012, the committee secured a loan of up to $40,000 from the Oakdale City Council to finance the memorial, and construction is slated to be finished in time to open for Veterans Day. The committee is still collecting donations for the project, as well as selling memorial paver bricks to interested donors. For more information about contributing to the project, visit the city of Oakdale's website at www.ci.oakdale.mn.us

Mayor Carmen Sarrack akdale continues to be a flourishing community with a proud history and a promising future. It's an area ripe with leisure pursuits and abundant shopping -- over 30 restaurants and coffee shops, two movie theaters, and a variety of fitness centers. We also pride ourselves on our commitment to the great outdoors. Over 25 parks dot the community, including the Oakdale Nature Preserve and its "jewel," the Discovery Center. The center has wildlife exhibits, works from featured local artisans, cozy seating and reception facilities, all in a scenic woodland setting. Visitors will also discover a historic one-room schoolhouse nearby. The Parks and Recreation Department, housed in the Discovery Center, offers programs and organizes events throughout the year, including the Mystery Egg Hunt, Haunted Hayride and Winter Wonderland. In the central part of town is Richard Walton Memorial Park,

located just west of City Hall. It offers a bandshell, weekly summer farmers market, and a renowned skateboard facility. Richard Walton Park also hosts the annual city celebration, Summerfest, each June. Other recreational offerings include easy access to the state's popular Gateway Trail and the Oak Marsh Golf Course. Oakdale is committed to preserving its housing stock and has made a variety of loan programs available to residents for home improvements. The city also has an effective code enforcement program that enables quick responses to issues such as junk vehicles, property maintenance

and noxious weeds. The city of Oakdale puts great emphasis on the environment and on reducing its carbon footprint. Since 1975, the city has distributed free trees to residents. The Environmental Management Commission immerses itself in such programs as energy conservation, tree preservation, water quality and the Adopt-a-Wetland Program, which promotes the protection of the 200-plus bodies of water in the city. Oakdale is an inviting city with a lot to offer. We hope you enjoy your stay! Mayor Carmen Sarrack Oakdale

Welcome

Greetings from the Mayor of Lake Elmo

Lake Elmo Library Branches Off
In the summer of 2011, the Lake Elmo mayor and city council surprised quite a few people when they announced their decision to break away from the Washington County library system and start out on their own. When Washington County announced it would once again reduce hours at its Lake Elmo facility, the city council decided to take matters into their own hands. Setting up and stocking a library is no easy feat, but since residents were already paying for the county system, taxes will not go up to fund the municipal library. In June 2012 a location was selected for the new library, and the branch is planned to open before the end of the year.

Mayor Dean Johnston estled in the heart of Washington County, the city of Lake Elmo is a picturesque community with a population of 8,182, located 10 miles east of downtown St. Paul. Covering 24 square miles, the community is noted for its rolling hills and rural ambiance. The city features attractive chains of lakes, taking its name from the largest lake. Lake Elmo is home to an extensive park system, including the Lake Elmo Regional Park Reserve. With a variety of housing options available, Lake Elmo is a highly desirable residential community. The city enjoys excellent accessibility to the MinneapolisSt. Paul metropolitan area via Interstate Highway 94 and State Highways 5 and 36. Major employers located near Lake Elmo include 3M, the Hartford and Imation Corporation, and School Districts 834 and 622. The city of Lake Elmo is developing plans to accommodate a population of 24,000 by 2030, as

a result of an agreement with the Metropolitan Council. Plans call for capitalizing on the character of the town's Old Village through the development of new housing units, pedestrian and bicycle trails, a central park and public facilities. Lake Elmo and the surrounding area offer a multitude of outdoor recreational opportunities, including swimming, fishing, water skiing, boating and sailing, as well as numerous winter sports such as snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. The area is also well known for its wildlife habitat and excellent hunting opportunities. History and nature are both important to the city of Lake Elmo. The Lake Elmo Regional

Park Reserve is a 3.5-square-mile area that is being returned to its natural state to reflect the land as it was before settlers arrived. Nearly 80 percent of the park is a natural preserve, and the remaining 20 percent is devoted to active recreation, including a boat launch, three separate campgrounds and equestrian trails through the woods. Outside of the Lake Elmo Park Reserve, there are over 15 city and county parks that residents can enjoy. The nearby St. Croix River offers yet another popular destination for relaxation and recreation. Mayor Dean Johnston Lake Elmo

History
Like many areas of the Midwest during the 1800s, farming was the main occupation for most of the pioneers who came to call Oakdale their home. European American immigrants were first drawn to Oakdale Township for its rich prairie land interspersed with white, burr, and black oak savannahs. Wheat was one of the most important crops that early farmers produced, but in the frigid winter months they harvested a different crop entirely - ice. The main winter industry in Oakdale was cutting ice from Tanners Lake and storing it for use during the warm summer months to keep food cold. Bernard B. "Bun" Cyphers was Oakdale's first known white settler. He arrived in 1848 and soon after built a hotel and meeting place. However, John Morgan was the first to permanently settle the area. In 1849, Morgan built a hotel on

History
"The brown thrush sings on every tree, The cat-bird trills his gushing glee, And not less happy, love, are we By the triplet elms of Elmo.

Histor y of Lake Elmo

Wild roses bloom along the shore, With pinks and harebells covered o'er, Their fragrance on the breeze they pour That stirs the elms of Elmo."
These verses from John Boxell's song, "The Elms of Elmo," describe many of Lake Elmo's great outdoor amenities in the 1800s. Although it was written more than 100 years ago, most of the song's lyrics still ring true today. Lake Elmo has seen continual population growth, but its greatest spur in development may be in the years ahead. From 2000 to 2005, the population grew by over 1,000 residents, and today nearly 8,200 people call Lake Elmo home. The city is planning for continued strong growth in the next two decades, especially in the historic Old Village area.

Linda Baumeister / Review Staff Lake Elmo's 4th of July celebration honors the country's founders in style.

Former resort hotspot

Bass Lake Station was the home of the first post office in the township. This is the area now commonly referred to as the Old Village. The St. Paul, Stillwater and Taylors Falls Railroad passed through Lake Elmo, which made it easy for tourists to reach the lake. Railroad promoter and St. Paul businessman A. B. Stickney purchased the land between the railroad tracks and the lake, where he built a 58-room hotel. Lake Elmo, the town's largest lake, was originally called Bass Lake. It's well known for its deep, clean water and has always been a popular fishing spot. In 1879, railroad entrepreneur
6

Stickney renamed the lake and the village. He named it after St. Elmo Murray, a character in the romantic novel, "St. Elmo," which his wife enjoyed. In the years leading up to the 1900s, Lake Elmo saw steady growth without becoming a boomtown. It enjoyed success with its resort hotel and Lake Elmo Residence Park, which was along the eastern side of the lake. Strong growth continued as the years went on. During the 1920s, Stillwater Road was paved, which allowed the village to establish itself as a major shipping point and dairy center. The city continues to be known as a rural area, but future developments are in the works. Although civic leaders expect a portion of Lake Elmo's agricultural fields will give way to suburban homes, they anticipate that its small-town ambiance will remain.

Lake Elmo's abundance of picturesque lakes and outdoor recreational opportunities will ensure that "The Elms of Elmo" hits home for current and future residents.

"Should coming years to you and me, Bring thoughtful care, as it may be, Yet still, in fancy, we shall see The three green elms of Elmo."
