Place Two: ___________________________________ This historical town sits on the eastern side of the Indian Ocean and was an important trading port in the Spice Route. Indonesia is only 30 minutes away by boat. The Portuguese first conquered it, then the Dutch owned it. After the Spice Wars between England and Holland, the English ruled the area until independence was declared. The city centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as there is a fort and church from colonial times. The Nyonya people here make a special dish with the spices Ms. Calaya has. Place Three: _________________________________ This place is a holy shrine for Hindus. Outside of India, it hosts one of the most impressive celebrations of Thaipusam just north of Kuala Lumpur. However, this island AND peninsula state was not ruled by the Dutch but rather the English. Besides natural gas and oil, this country also exports palm oil and other palm products. It was under British control for some time and many of the citys buildings have European architecture, but are slowly falling apart. This city is a major port where the Bago River meets another river. The countrys largest paya and Buddhist shrineSwedagon Pagodawas built here. Place Five:__________________________________ Once an ancient Buddhist kingdom, this area on the Irrawaddy River was home to over 50,000 temples and shrines. King Anawrahta created the kingdom in the early 1000s. This started the formation of the modern country it sits in. Unfortunately, a huge earthquake rocked the region in the 1970s causing mostly all of the temples to be destroyed. Today at least 2,000 of the original temples have been rebuilt. The temperatures are very hot during the day and very cold at night. The climate is like the desert. Where in the world is Ms. Calaya? Place Six: __________________________________ This mountain town of 8,000 was created mainly as an outpost for the British to monitor Shan State south of Taunggyi. Every five days, a local market rotates to the town and ethnic people sell their handmade goods. The Pa-O people make bright colored headscarves and purses. A large lake is 50 km away. Place Seven: _______________________________ This lake is also located in Shan State (Nyaung Shwe Township) and is home to many ethnic peoples. The fishermen have a special way of rowing their boatsonly using one foot! The Shan men wear long, baggy pants instead of the traditional longyi. Some villages make silver products and others weave these pants. The village of Sankar is located to its south. It once also could have been on the Spice Route as its east side borders the Indian Ocean. Its currency is the kyat and the bills are changed often based on which general is ruling.
