The Charlotte/Douglas International Airport is one of the city's proudest facilities. Charlotte/Douglas International Airport is owned and operated by the City of Charlotte and is ranked as one of the nation's top airports. The airport serves commercial, cargo, private, corporate, and military operations. The airport was constructed in 1936 and has a long history of construction and renovation. Charlotte/Douglas International Airport has transformed into one of the few international airports in the country. It was in 1954 when the first 70,000 square-foot passenger terminal opened. The airport began to gain more travelers and traffic; by 1978, international cargo flights were scheduled from Charlotte to Zurich. Passenger 2011 International about 2.5 million Air carrier about 23 million Regional about 14 million Total 39,043,708 As the second largest hub on the east coast, CLT offered nonstop service to 138 destinations and averaged 673 daily departures in 2011. The impact created a jump in Airport operations. Last year, CLT oversaw 539,842 landings and departures, a 2 percent increase from 2010. The numbers are particularly pleasing to CLT officials due to the 70-day closure (August 15 October 23) of the center runway for concrete repaving. In 2009 CLT received the eagle award from the international air transport Agency. The eagle award has been presented annually to recognize airports and air navigation service providers who provide quality service and value for money to their airline customers. Facilities Parking garage galvanized 2005 maintenance 72 years projected As the passenger traffic has increased over the past few years, so has the demand for more parking. In late 2004, the airport began reconstruction to expand the 3,000-space parking facilitys capacity by 13 percent. In 2009, an additional garage at the site was specified to incorporate galvanized steel, due to the success of the 2004 structure. The designer wanted to break away from the normal square, concrete box structure of parking facilities, and envisioned a facility that would mirror the curvature of an airplane wing. In order to accomplish this design, the architect and engineer decided to attach stainless steel cladding to a galvanized structural steel frame. Three hundred tons of hot-dip galvanized steel was used in the project including bow-string trusses, embed plates and anchors, stair towers, stairways, hand rails, and castellated beams. Galvanized steel was specified for its exceptional maintenance-free service life.

By specifying a hot-dip galvanized coating instead of a paint system, the garage will not require costly maintenance. Furthermore, the galvanized coating will allow the structure to remain a corrosion-free, attractive piece of the airport landscape well into the future. The Charlotte Douglas International Airport will change that fact when they open a $1.1 million recycling center in February 2012, to include a vermicomposting system that will use 300 pounds of worms to chow down on up to two tons of airport patron waste per day. Not only will this endeavor save the airport money by not having to pay for the gathering and ridding of waste, but the subsequent compost created will be used as free fertilizer for the airports 6,000 acres. Whatever worm castings are leftover will be packaged and sold, which could be lucrative as such material has a reputation of being the black gold of composts. The entire recycling center, which will sort and sell plastic, aluminum and paper in addition to the vermicomposting system, is anticipated to save the airport roughly $1 million over the course of five years. Go Green will supervise the center and provide ten new jobs to manage the initiative.
