LA BIBLIOTECA: DICOTOMA ENTRE LO PBLICO Y LO PRIVADO, LO NTIMO Y LO NOTORIO, QUE
SE PONE DE MANIFIESTO EN ESTA TIPOLOGA DE ESPACIO A LA QUE QUIZS ESTEMOS TAN ACOSTUMBRADOS QUE NO NOS PARAMOS A MIRAR CON DETENIMIENTO.

EL ARQUITECTO JOSEP LLINS ANALIZ DETALLADAMENTE LO QUE PARA L SIGNIFICABA DISEAR UNA BIBLIOTECA Y AS SURGI LA JAUME FUSTER. UN EDIFICIO GANADOR DEL PREMIO FAD DE ARQUITECTURA 2006. THE LIBRARY: DICHOTOMY BETWEEN THE PUBLIC AND PRIVATE, THE INTIMATE AND THE WELL-KNOWN, WHICH CLEARLY SHOWS THAT THIS TYPE OF SPACE WHICH WE ARE PERHAPS SO ACCUSTOMED TO THAT WE DO NOT STOP TO LOOK AT CAREFULLY. THE ARCHITECT JOSEP LLINS ANALYZED IN DETAIL WHAT IT MEANT FOR HIM TO DESIGN A LIBRARY AND THUS THE JAUME FUSTER LIBRARY WAS CREATED. THIS IS A WINNING BUILDING OF THE 2006 FAD PRIZE FOR ARCHITECTURE.

La biblioteca pblica Jaume Fuster se alza sobre la Plaza de Lesseps en Barcelona, un solar que separa las calles en pendiente, del tejido urbano de trazado ms llano. Detrs de la plaza las calles se elevan hacia la sierra de la Collserola que arropa la ciudad condal. As entendi el espacio Josep Llins Carmona, arquitecto autor del proyecto que, aprovechando su condicin de lmite entre montaa y ciudad, configur volumtricamente el edificio a partir de las cubiertas, un elemento clave tanto en el exterior como en el interior de la biblioteca Jaume Fuster.

Continuidad visual Para no romper totalmente con la tipologa de edificios que quedan a espaldas de la biblioteca, Llins plante fundir el propio volumen de sta con el de los edificios posteriores. Esto se materializa en la planta de la Jaume Fuster, de geometra romboidal, que completa el volumen iniciado por las construcciones que la circundan utilizando medidas de los edificios vecinos y adaptando la volumetra a los diversos espacios o escalas a las que debe responder la biblioteca Jaume Fuster (la plaza, la calle secundaria, los edificios altos de viviendas y las unifamiliares).

Segn el arquitecto, una de las claves de este proyecto es el entendimiento del entorno a nivel urbanstico, ya que se ha destinado a espacio pblico la mejor parte del solar. El juego de continuidad de espacios lleva al visitante de la plaza de Lesseps hasta el interior de la biblioteca a travs de una marquesina que da acceso al edificio y que, para Llins, es un elemento fundamental porque facilita y potencia la relacin de la biblioteca con el espacio pblico de acceso. La otra cara de las cubiertas Una vez en del edificio, las caractersticas cubiertas inclinadas estn siempre presentes en todos y cada uno de los espacios de la biblioteca, con el fin de mantener una coherencia entre el interior y el exterior, entre el continente y el contenido. Los techos desde dentro actan como referencia espacial unitaria que cubre las relaciones individualizadas de los usuarios con los libros. Y estas relaciones son la piedra angular del diseo del interior de la Jaume Fuster, del que tambin se ha encargado el estudio de arquitectura de Josep Llins Carmona, que otorga importancia al concepto de cubrir interior-

mente, introduciendo dobles espacios que permitan la visibilidad de la cubierta desde la planta baja y la planta primera. Los espacios interiores del edificio atienden a la necesidad de polaridad que su tipologa de biblioteca requiere. Se trata de un edificio pblico, colectivo, que tiene la capacidad de albergar a muchas personas y para ello cuenta con espacios de grandes dimensiones; pero al mismo tiempo deben ser entornos domsticos, que favorezcan la intimidad y la concentracin necesarias para el estudio y la lectura. Imagen unitaria La biblioteca cuenta con distintos espacios: salas de lectura, auditorio, sala polivalente Sin embargo, todos ellos se relacionan entre s gracias a los materiales. La madera de arce barnizada es protagonista en pavimentos, revestimientos, techos y mobiliario. Un material neutro que responde positivamente a la iluminacin natural, generando ambientes luminosos y clidos. Al tratarse de un proyecto de financiacin pblica, para la eleccin del mobiliario el estudio de Josep Llins escogi entre las distintas ofertas de empresas especializa-

das en amueblamiento de este tipo de espacios, optando por la que ms se ajustaba a las necesidades de la biblioteca, en funcin de los prototipos y el presupuesto, afirma el arquitecto. As, el mobiliario se encarg a la firma espaola Industrias Gama. Transmitir confort La intencin del interiorismo que ha creado el estudio de Josep Llins es fundamentalmente transmitir confort personal y aislamiento intelectual, y favorecer el respeto por la concentracin de los

dems usuarios. Esto se consigue en gran parte mediante la iluminacin natural, imprescindible en una biblioteca. El estudio optaba por distinguir las distintas reas de lectura, estanteras y espacios de paso a travs de la iluminacin; sin embargo, tuvieron que conjugar estas funciones con las prioridades que los tcnicos de biblioteca establecan. Segn estos tcnicos, una biblioteca debe ser verstil y permitir la movilidad del mobiliario, cambiar de posicin las estanteras o, por ejemplo, sustituirlas por ms mesas en momentos puntuales de gran afluencia de usuarios, como pocas de exmenes de la Universidad. De esta forma el proyecto de iluminacin surge, finalmente, de un compromiso entre estas dos tendencias: la separacin de espacios y la versatilidad de los mismos. La biblioteca Jaume Fuster, ganadora del premio FAD de Arquitectura 2006 y del Premio Nacional de Cultura 2006, otorgado por la Generalitat de Catalunya, domestica el espacio hasta hacerlo confortable y luminoso; al mismo tiempo pblico y privado. The Jaume Fuster Public Library was built on the Plaza de Lesseps in Barcelona, a site that separates the streets that slope upwards from the flattest section of the urban fabric. Behind the Plaza the streets rise up towards the mountain range of the Collserola that wraps itself the Condal City. This is how Josep Llins Carmona, architect and author of the

project understood the space which by, taking advantage of its condition of being a limit between mountain and city, configured volumetrically the building from its covers, a key element both on its outside as well as inside the Jaume Fuster Library. Visual continuity In order not to break totally with the type of buildings that are located behind the library, Llins argued for the fusion of the volume of this building with that of the buildings behind it. This is materiali-

zed in the plan of the Jaume Fuster, which in rhomboid geometry, completes the volume initiated by the surrounding constructions using the sizes of the neighbouring buildings and adapting the volume of the Jaume Fuster library to the different spaces and scales (the Plaza, the secondary street, the high apartment buildings and the single-family houses). According to the architect, one of the keys of this project is the understanding of its surroundings at a city-planning level, since the best part of the lot has

been awarded for public space. The game of continuity of space takes the visitor from the Plaza of Lesseps into the interior of the library through a marquee that provides access to the building and which, for Llins, is a fundamental element because it facilitates and powers the relation of the library with the public access space. library, with the purpose of maintaining a coherence between the interior and the outside, the building and the content. The ceilings from within act like a unitary reference space that covers the individualized relationship of users with books. And these relationships are the cornerstone of the design of the interior of the Jaume Fuster, which has been handed to the Studio of Josep Llins Carmona, which allocates importance to the concept of covering internally, introducing double spaces that allow view of the cover from the ground floor and the first floor. The internal spaces of the building take care of the polarity that this type of library requires. This is a public, collective building, that has the capacity to accommodate a lot of people and for that reason it calls on big sized spaces; but at the same time they must be domestic surroundings, which favour privacy and the concentration necessary for study and reading. Unitary image The library includes different spaces: rea-

ding rooms, auditorium, multipurpose room Nevertheless, all of them are related to each other thanks to the materials. Varnished maple wood is the chief element in flooring, coatings, ceilings and furniture. This is a neutral material that responds positively to natural lighting, generating a luminous and warm setting. Because this is a project of public financing, regarding the selection of the furniture the studio of Josep Llins chose between different supplies from companies specializing in the furnishing of this type of space, opting for those products which best meet the needs of the library, based on the prototypes and the budget, affirms the architect. Thus, the furniture was selected from the Spanish company, Industrias Gama. To transmit comfort The intention of the interior design created by the studio of Josep Llins is essentially to transmit personal comfort and intellectual isolation, and to favour respect to other users. This is obtained to a large extent by means of natural lighting, essential in a library. The studio chose to

distinguish the different areas for reading, bookcases and walking passages through the lighting; nevertheless, they had to play off these functions with the priorities that the library technicians set down. According to these technicians, a library must be versatile and must allow the mobility of the furniture, changing

the position of the bookcases or, for example, replacing them by more tables at precise moments when there are a large number of users, like examination times at University. In this way the lighting project becomes finally, in a compromise between these two trends: the separation of spaces and

the versatility of the same. The Jaume Fuster Library, winner of the 2006 FAD Prize of Architecture and of the 2006 National Prize of Culture, granted by the Autonomous Government of Catalonia, domesticates its space until it becomes comfortable and luminous; at the same time public and private.
