4. Disobedience leads to loss of blessing --

Adam and Eve’s disobedience, consequences, covering by God
Genesis 2:15-3:23

PRE-STORY DIALOG: In our last Bible story we learned about the creation of the first man, Adam,
and the first woman, Eve. Today during the family devotion the Bible story is about the disobedience of
Adam and Eve. As you pay attention to the story, think about these things:
9 Where were Adam and Eve living?
9 What one thing did God tell them not to do?
9 Who did they obey? Who did they disobey? Why?
9 What were the consequences (results) of the choice each one made?
This is the Bible story of how Adam and Eve disobeyed God.

STORY: Now God had told Adam that you may eat from any tree that is in the garden, except you must
not eat from the tree that is in the center of the garden, the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God
told him in the day you eat from that tree you will surely die. Now the serpent was the craftiest of all the
animals that the Lord had made and one day the serpent came to the woman in the garden and asked her,
did God really say that you must not eat from any tree in the garden? The woman answered the serpent you
can eat fruit from any of the trees in the garden, but God said you must not eat from the tree that is in the
middle of the garden and you must not touch it or you will surely die. Oh, the serpent said, you will not
surely die, for God knows that when you eat from that tree your eyes will be open and you will be like God
knowing good and evil. The woman went and looked at the fruit from that particular tree and it looked
good for food and it was pleasing to the eye and it was also desirable to have wisdom, to know like God.
So she took some and she ate it. And she gave some to her husband, the man who was there with her, and
he ate it. And when they did eat it their eyes were opened and they realized they were naked and they were
ashamed and so they made some coverings for themselves out of leaves and hid themselves. Now in the
cool of the day, the man and the woman heard the sound of God coming from the garden and so they hid
among the trees in the garden. But God said to them, where are you? And the man answered, I heard you
in the garden and I was afraid because I was naked so I hid. And God said, who told you that you were
naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from? The man answered, he said,
the woman, the woman you gave me, she gave me some the fruit and I ate it. And the Lord said to the
woman, what is this you have done? And the woman said, the serpent, he deceived me and I ate it. So the
Lord spoke to the serpent and said that because you have done this you are cursed above all the animals,
you will crawl on your belly all the days of your life, through dust. And I will put hatred between you and
the woman and hatred between your offspring and her offspring. The son of the woman will crush your
head and you will strike his heal and to the woman God said I will greatly increase your pains in child
bearing. Only with great difficulty will you give birth. Your desire will be for your husband and he will
rule over you. And to the man, he said, because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree which I told
you that you shall not eat from that tree, cursed is the ground because of you, only by painful toil will you
raise your food from the crops. They will produce thorns and weeds for you and only by the sweat of your
brow will you have food. From the ground you were made and to the ground you will return at your death.
And then God made coverings for the man’s and the woman’s nakedness, he covered them with clothing
made of animal skins. And then God said if we allow the man and woman to remain in the garden they
may eat from the tree of life and remain in this state forever. And so he sent the man and the woman out of
the garden and placed at the entrance there a flaming sword, which moved back and forth, and an angel to
ensure that they could never again return. This is the story of the disobedience of Adam and Eve.

POST STORY DIALOG: Let’s talk about the story.

• Where were Adam and Eve living? Did Adam and Eve have everything that they needed? What was
the one thing God told them not to do?
• What did the serpent tell Eve and therefore deceived her? What did Eve do after she ate the forbidden
fruit? What did Adam do? Did they both disobey God?
• Did Adam and Eve try to hide from God? Did God know where they were and what they had done?
Does God know when we do something wrong or can we hide it from him?
• When someone disobeys God’s Word, it is called sin. As a result of disobeying God’s Word, what
was the serpent’s punishment? Eve’s punishment? Adam’s punishment?
• With what did God clothe Adam and Eve after their disobedience? How do you think God got the
animal skins?
• Did eating the forbidden fruit seem to be a big decision when Adam and Eve made it? Can doing
something wrong, even if you think it is small, have bad consequences (results)?
• Are there people who encourage us to do wrong things that do not follow God’s Word, the Bible?
What are some wrong things we might be asked to do? What should we say to them? If we do them,
what will be the consequences (results)?
• Does doing something wrong affect our relationship with God? Affect our relationship with others?
